In short (whole book)
Alex Roth prepares Thameland for a final war while investigating the fear that restores the Ravener. He helps the heroes evolve their marks, graduates from the University of Generasi, and discovers that Aenflynn has hidden the Ravener and Uldar's stolen body and throne in Och Fir Nog. During the invasion, Alex's coalition attacks both enemies. Hannah returns as the Traveler, Carey becomes her divine herald, and Alex learns to act in several places at once. Aenflynn dies when Uldar's throne is destroyed. The Traveler and Merzhin sever the Ravener's link to Thameland, while Alex and Claygon cripple its internal mana network. Alex prevents its attempted detonation and kills it permanently. Thameland rebuilds under the Traveler's faith, and Uldar's essence yields limited immortality elixirs. Alex, Theresa, Khalik, Thundar, Isolde, and Grimloch accept immortality. More than a year later, Alex and Theresa marry and leave for an interworld honeymoon.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Alex Roth overcame the Mark of the Fool and restored the lost Mark of the General, becoming the commander Uldar had tried to erase from Thameland's cycle of heroes. The truth behind that cycle was exposed: Uldar created the Ravener, and the dead deity's legacy now threatens the realm he claimed to protect. Alex and his companions survived the Hidden Church, war, and the loss of Carey London, but the Ravener remains capable of returning after destruction. Uldar's corpse and throne are missing. Alex's closest allies include his fiancee Theresa and her familiar Brutus, his sapient golem son Claygon, his sister Selina, his cabal, the heroes of Thameland, and researchers from the University of Generasi. Hannah Kim, remembered as the Saint of Ulrich and increasingly known as the Traveler, has become a growing divine presence connected to Alex. With Uldar dead and the old pattern broken, Alex's coalition must locate the Ravener, understand how it restores itself, and prevent another century of fear and destruction.
Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)
Ravener spawn begin behaving in unprecedented ways. Some still massacre mortals and create major dungeon outbreaks, while others rescue travelers, disarm attackers, and leave usable food. Alex considers whether Hannah's influence is responsible, but no cause is established. Seeking a permanent victory, he consults Professor Val'Rok and shifts the problem away from raw mana manipulation toward the energy that rebuilds the Ravener after death. Their leading theory is that fear gathered across Thameland fuels its return. Alex develops several overlapping safeguards: poison the enemy's mana generation with material derived from Uldar, disrupt its restoration protocols, deny its fear supply, and sever any divine bond tying it to Thameland. Baelin returns and accepts a supporting role, though he warns that even his own power may not guarantee victory. Alex also completes more of his university requirements, publishes his blood-magic research, and starts viewing his long future as a succession of possible callings rather than one fixed vocation. Meanwhile, competition for dungeon-core substance draws mercenaries into Thameland as the war intensifies.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
Alex's researchers identify many redundant restoration systems inside the Ravener and prepare both a terrain-stabilizing machine and an injector for their nearly finished poison. Merzhin concludes that a kingdom-wide divine interdiction could separate Thameland from the enemy's fear-based power. His first proposal would destroy his soul gate and kill him, a sacrifice he seeks out of guilt over Carey. Alex persuades him that living to undo Uldar's legacy is the better form of atonement, and Hannah becomes the preferred bearer of the interdiction if she can return fully. A hidden feature of the hero marks then emerges. When a hero masters a useful discipline taught by the General, the mark can evolve from gold to white. Merzhin's transformed mark vastly improves his divine capacity, allowing him to restore Birger's missing leg. Alex adapts nonverbal magic to Drestra's true dragon form, evolving the Sage's mark, then trains Hart in movement and aerial combat, evolving the Champion's mark. The Ravener recognizes the heroes' growing strength, remains divided between aid and destruction, and begins producing Skyfire Swarms to kill Alex. Cedric starts the final and most complex hero-training program.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
Alex completes his remaining examinations and graduates from the University of Generasi with distinction. Isolde is named valedictorian and uses her address to emphasize responsibility alongside power. Afterward, she gives Cedric a traditional Rhinean courtship gift and asks to court him. He accepts, and her family agrees to learn more about him rather than reject the match. At Alex's own celebration, he looks toward a future in which Thameland no longer faces recurring Ravener cycles. The military preparation continues alongside these milestones. Cedric combines prayer, movement, grounding, mana control, and spellcraft as he works toward the final mark evolution. Tobias publicly recognizes the Traveler's divine elevation, reveals Alex's new status as General, and announces that the other hero marks have improved. Alex then leads field operations while directing faith toward the Traveler. The heroes, cabal, and university allies strengthen their magic and refine anti-Ravener venom, mana-draining devices, and protection against dungeon terrain control. Thameland's forces grow more confident and capable, but the central strategic problem remains unchanged: no search has found the Ravener.
Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)
Surface searches fail to locate the Ravener, Uldar's corpse, or the missing throne. Alex recruits elite fighters from the Whetstone Tavern, including former allies Kiembe and Azarak, while the heroes continue defeating spawn in the field. Cedric finally casts nonverbally through his integrated fighting style, causing his mark to turn white. Contact among all five heroes then evolves Alex's Mark of the General. Its new power divides his awareness into coordinated streams, letting him perceive and cast several spells at once. The Ravener reacts by restoring ancient offensive processes and sending three Skyfire Swarms to hunt the General. Alex organizes a defense away from Welling. His simultaneous spellwork, Drestra's acid tornado, and the combined attacks of the allies drive all three fiery swarms into the sea and destroy them. The defenders follow the broad trail of devastation back toward its apparent origin but find no entrance or divine trace. Brutus retrieves a mushroom fragment that Drestra recognizes as part of a Fae gate. The clue explains the failed search and points to the Feywild as the Ravener's hiding place.
Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)
The heroes realize their earlier pact with Aenflynn may have supplied the Fae Lord with Ravener spawn and broad freedom to work against Thameland. Aenflynn is then revealed using Uldar's throne, while the Ravener launches a coordinated invasion through Feygates. The capital is breached, King Athelstan is wounded defending his family, and settlements across the realm face specialized spawn. Alex empowers defenders and races between threatened strongpoints. Taraka Shale supplies cannon-equipped golems, Vernia Jules holds the research castle with chaos bombs, and Baelin secures Generacian reinforcements. Unable to win by responding to every attack, the allies form a sixteen-member strike force and enter the Feywild. Aenflynn admits stealing Uldar's corpse and throne and allowing the invasion while he uses divine power against rival Fae realms. His offer to evacuate Thameland in exchange for surrender is rejected. Baelin traces the Fae Lord to his palace and leaves to confront him. In Och Fir Nog, Alex's force discovers open dungeon craters producing spawn and a gate network carrying them into Thameland. The group splits to bury gates, find Uldar's body, and locate the Ravener.
Story so far - through chapter 60 (this book)
Alex's courage spell suppresses fear across Thameland, unexpectedly starving the Ravener of fuel for new cores and spawn. While Baelin battles Aenflynn, Alex uses invisible astral Angeli to follow immense divine traces from the Fae Lord's castle. Aenflynn confirms the alliance by sending the Ravener divine power. The enemy responds with elite spawn and living dungeon cores that can rapidly create armies, causing severe losses in Thameland. Alex destroys an ambush and follows the trail underground, where the separate teams reunite above the probable lair. Merzhin senses Uldar's presence below. The assault plan gives highest protection to the machine that prevents dungeon terrain control, the poison injectors, and Merzhin. Alex intends to enter the Ravener with Claygon and disable its internal mana nodes, while Merzhin and Alex later destroy Aenflynn's throne. The group enters a vast tunnel network, defeats petrifiers, and confirms that the stabilizing machine can stop the Ravener from crushing them with moving stone. Björgrund proposes digging directly toward Uldar's body instead of following prepared passages. The bypass succeeds, but the Ravener detects their approach and sends elite defenders to intercept them.
Story so far - through chapter 71 (this book)
The party defeats a tunneling ambush and reaches the Ravener's cavern, where Uldar's corpse sits across a lake. Merzhin attempts a conversation. The Ravener confirms that Uldar changed Generals into Fools and still insists that Thameland must face endless trials, even though its creator is dead. Claygon argues that a created being can choose a new purpose, but the Ravener refuses. Alex threatens Uldar's corpse to expose the enemy's priority, and battle begins. The coalition seals entrances and fights through death beams, ethereal parasites, mana poison, and waves of spawn. Alex touches the Ravener but cannot teleport into its shifting interior. He therefore draws another poison attack, feigns defeat, and leaves with Merzhin to destroy the throne sustaining Aenflynn's aid. At Aenflynn's castle, they enter invisibly but are trapped between two lethal divine wards. Merzhin's interdiction prevents the Fae Lord from directly killing them, though guards can still enter. Baelin refuses to surrender and continues fighting outside. Alex holds the confined space in a steel body while Merzhin works on the ward. At the same time, Alex's courage spell expires across Thameland, allowing fear to feed the Ravener again.
Story so far - through chapter 81 (this book)
Thameland's defenses approach collapse as fear multiplies the Ravener's forces. Selina builds a shrine to the Traveler and joins her faith with that of the royal family and other believers. The resulting connection lets Alex and Selina briefly reach their dead parents and find Hannah and Carey beyond life. Hannah returns as the Traveler, with Carey transformed beside her. She empowers Tobias, rescues threatened settlements, heals defenders, and gives the realm a decisive reprieve. Carey appears inside Aenflynn's throne room and helps Merzhin attack the inner ward. Strengthened by Hannah, Alex passes through the outer barrier. He then understands the Traveler's gift as control of space itself and learns to exist in several places at once. He renews the courage protecting Thameland, assists at the throne, and enters the Ravener's crystalline inner world with a mana-siphoning poison device. Despite the construct's attacks and regenerating pathways, Alex reaches a mana-generation tower and injects the prepared toxin. The node cracks, loses control, and must be cut away from the Ravener's network. Outside, Alex also captures a dungeon core and orders its fire cloud to defend mortals, turning the enemy's own production against it.
Story so far - through chapter 90 (this book)
Claygon chooses to absorb the energy in one of the Ravener's nodes and evolves into steel mixed with dungeon-core substance. He gains death beams and the ability to create spawn, which he directs against the Ravener while Alex continues poisoning towers. At Aenflynn's castle, Merzhin, Carey, and Alex finally breach the inner ward and begin breaking Uldar's throne. Baelin overpowers Aenflynn and brings him into the chamber. Alex traps the Fae Lord in the rupturing throne, whose released divinity kills him and destroys the castle. In the Ravener's central node, Alex finds a replica throne room carrying mana, divinity, and mortal fear through the entire construct. The Traveler and Merzhin impose the realm-wide interdiction, severing Thameland from the Ravener. Facing permanent death, the Ravener tries to detonate itself and every dungeon core in the realm. The companions return to help restrain it while Theresa removes Uldar's corpse. Alex uses Kelda's conductive coin to complete his rewired circuit. Poisoned mana burns through the Ravener, stops the explosion, and destroys its ability to recover. The Ravener dies permanently, all active spawn collapse, and every principal fighter survives.
Story so far - through chapter 97 (this book)
The coalition returns with Uldar's corpse and the Ravener's remains. Claygon turns his new abilities toward restoration, creating fog cleansers that remove battlefield hazards and earth tillers that renew damaged soil. Carey identifies herself as the Traveler's first divine herald, reconciles with Vernia Jules, and joins Merzhin in treating the wounded. Three months later, Thameland is rebuilding and no surviving spawn have been found. The leadership publicly announces Uldar's death but hides his treachery to preserve stability. His funeral is staged as an ascent, while Alex and Carey secretly move the body to a sealed throne room under Baelin's wards. The Traveler becomes Uldar's public successor. Aenflynn's death fractures Och Fir Nog, and Gwilain offers to serve as Alex's source of information there. Nine months after victory, Merzhin opens a rebuilt Church of the Traveler. Alex and Baelin use purified essence taken from Uldar to make a limited supply of immortality elixirs. Alex, Theresa, Khalik, Thundar, Isolde, and Grimloch drink them. Drestra, Cedric, Hart, Björgrund, and Merzhin defer or decline for now, while Selina's choice is reserved until she is fully grown.
Story so far - through chapter 102 (this book)
More than a year and a half after the Ravener's fall, Thameland and Generasi benefit from Claygon's protective creations, improved harvests, growing trade, and safer medical uses of Alex and Hart's blood-magic work. Alex's bakeries, magic shops, golem partnership with Shale, and flying-ship projects flourish. Selina advances as a fire mage and looks toward independent adventures. Alex and Theresa hold a small wedding in the Temple of the Traveler rather than accept a state ceremony. Hannah officiates under the Thameish Circle tradition, and the couple exchange vows before their families and closest companions. At the reception, Khalik and Sinope reveal that their own wedding is approaching, while the wider group reaffirms its lasting bonds. Alex briefly dreams that old enemies have returned, but wakes and confirms that Minervus, Leopold, the Ravener, Aenflynn, and Uldar remain gone. Before leaving with Theresa, he visits Ulrich, helps an abused bakery assistant named Martin, and receives a carved tribute from the town guards. Alex and Theresa then depart as immortal spouses for a honeymoon among other worlds, with the Traveler's power and Baelin's spells supporting their journey.
How does it end? (ending)
The Ravener is permanently dead, its active spawn have collapsed, and it can no longer create dungeon cores or return through Thameland's fear. Aenflynn and Uldar's throne are also destroyed. Uldar's corpse is recovered, publicly honored under a stabilizing account that omits his treachery, then secretly sealed away. Carey serves as Hannah's first divine herald, Merzhin opens a Church of the Traveler, and Thameland rebuilds with Claygon's cleansing and agricultural creations. Alex and Baelin make a limited supply of immortality elixirs from purified divine essence. Alex, Theresa, Khalik, Thundar, Isolde, and Grimloch drink them, while Selina must wait and several other allies defer. Och Fir Nog remains fractured into petty realms, with Gwilain offering Alex an information alliance. Alex's businesses, golem work, and flying ships expand. He considers a distant invitation to Baelin's cabal. Alex and Theresa marry in the Traveler's temple, then depart as immortal spouses to travel among other worlds.
