In short (whole book)
Alex completes his first year of combat training, broadens his studies into summoning and blood magic, and helps secure Generasi's official right to investigate dungeon cores in Tameland. He and Theresa deepen their relationship while her parents visit, and his friends enter the Games. Khalik and Najyah, Claygon, and the Theresa-Thundar-Grimlock trio win major events, while Alex's team takes third in the Grand Battle. The Games end in a demon assault organized by Leopold Richter, whose attacks are exposed by Keebus and stopped by Baelin. Alex and his allies survive, but Burnsaw links Alex's unusual transportation magic to a new historical mystery and escapes permanent destruction. Leopold is condemned, Amir is imprisoned for concealing him, and the expedition proceeds after the dead are honored. Alex masters Life to Mana and enters Luthering with his survey team. The Ravener senses his return and begins preparing against him.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Alex Roth escaped Tameland after receiving the mark of the Fool, a role that places him among the kingdom's marked heroes while obstructing direct combat magic. He concealed that identity and built a new life as a student in Generasi with his younger sister, Selina, and his partner, Theresa Lu. Alex learned to exploit the mark's ability to accelerate non-combat learning, developed his skills in alchemy and magic, and assembled a close circle of capable student allies. He and Selina created Claygon, a powerful four-armed golem whose core came from a dungeon connected to the Ravener. Attacks on Alex's household and an old foreign book also raised questions about the Traveler, an obscure figure tied to an unknown language and to the unusual power behind Alex's transportation magic. Baelin, Generasi's chancellor and Alex's instructor, knows Alex is the Fool and has begun investigating those mysteries. The group is now considering an expedition to Tameland that could study dungeon cores while keeping Alex away from hostile priests.
Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)
In a past Tameland battle, the marked heroes defend standing stones from a horde of muck warpers while their Fool remains missing and is feared dead. The saint completes a slow seasonal miracle that destroys the attackers, but the defenders suffer casualties and argue over the method before continuing their search for a nearby dungeon. In the present, Alex's cabal completes Baelin's final Combat 2 practical by confronting a dune worm in the Barrens. The group stays beyond the creature's effective earth-magic range, lures it into exposing itself, and uses Theresa's alchemical arrows, Alex's teleported potions, Isolde's lightning, Khalik's sound magic, Thundar's strength, and Claygon's power to exhaust and kill it. Baelin confirms that Alex's group finishes first and credits its success to flexibility, preparation, and trust. The students pass the course and receive completed charm pendants marking their association with Baelin. The proposed Tameland expedition remains months away and still requires political approval. Baelin asks Alex to help with preparations but warns him not to let the future mission consume the university life and family responsibilities immediately before him. Alex therefore enters summer with a successful first year behind him and a need to balance further study, Selina's welfare, and the uncertain expedition.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
Alex begins a lighter summer term while pursuing several paths that can work around the Fool's mark. He studies stronger force defenses, body enhancement, blood magic, and summoning, where his unusual sensitivity to transportation magic makes the tower's portals especially noticeable. Lessons on names and voluntary contracts suggest that summoning could eventually provide lasting allies and new evidence about the Traveler. Alex also suspects that Claygon may have briefly responded through their mental bond, although neither Baelin nor his alchemy professor can yet establish that the golem is becoming aware. Outside class, Selina asks for greater responsibility in protecting herself and Alex promises to support her magical education. He starts building her a self-guiding messenger construct for her birthday. Alex and Theresa also make time for their relationship. Their first formal date survives bad weather, and they tell each other that they are in love. They then prepare to take a monster-hunting contract together for both experience and money.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
Alex and Theresa take a contract against a Vespara blamed for destroying an estate's hives and livestock. Their investigation reveals human tracks, a guarded camp, and evidence that several tamers are deliberately using the creature for commercial sabotage. Alex, Theresa, Brutus, and Claygon defeat the Vespara, capture all four operatives, and recover letters from an unidentified client. Baelin praises the result while advising Alex to avoid lethal conflict where possible and to build enough strength that mercy remains an option. In Tameland, Baelin and Generasi's delegation negotiate directly with the king. Generasi receives a large coastal territory at Greymoor, priority rights to dungeon cores, and authority to conduct research while priests remain five miles away. The expedition is now official. Alex masters Force Armor and joins his friends in registering for the Games, including the second-division Grand Battle. Theresa's parents arrive for a month-long visit just as a magical disturbance at City Hall interrupts their reunion.
Story so far - through chapter 41 (this book)
The City Hall disturbance is a demon summoning, prompting curfews and intensified security while the attacker remains unidentified. Baelin nevertheless continues the Greymoor project and assigns Alex and Isolde to assemble a survey team and help prepare magical equipment. Theresa's parents learn how much danger she, Alex, and Selina have concealed from them. The resulting family strain eases after Selina's birthday, and Theresa's father accepts Alex's serious intentions toward his daughter while warning him about the risks surrounding all three young people. Alex also discovers that Keebus has built an illicit tunnel garden beneath Magical Botany to grow potion ingredients for Harmless. He keeps the secret but warns Keebus that the search for the summoner makes it especially dangerous. As the Games approach, Alex's Grand Battle team studies stronger opponents and declines a paid offer to merge with the Hydra Companions, preferring a limited pact against a shared rival. Alex then survives a malformed summoning, masters the intended elemental beetle spell, and recognizes another possible link between summoning, teleportation, and the force associated with the Traveler. Temple attacks timed to Baelin's absence expose a likely leak from the expedition research group.
Story so far - through chapter 51 (this book)
Baelin reveals that his departure was bait known only to the expedition research team. The timing of the temple attacks places every member under suspicion. Investigators question Alex about his religious views, the attacks, and his seemingly impossible arrival in Generasi after leaving Tameland. He protects the secrets of the mark and his teleportation while giving verifiable alibis, then is released without knowing whether he has been cleared. Alex, Theresa, and Selina decide to remain in the city and compete. The Games open under heavy security. Khalik and Najyah dominate the lightweight Duel of Proxies through flight, sound, earth magic, and careful mana conservation. They defeat Keebus and Harmless in a close semifinal and win the championship. Claygon's super-heavyweight tournament begins next, with Tyrus Goldtooth among the prospective rivals Alex hopes to face. Theresa also begins considering whether a familiar bond with Brutus might be possible through life force rather than mana.
Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)
Alex and Claygon advance through the super-heavyweight Duel of Proxies by combining Claygon's exceptional power with tactical adaptation. They defeat a brass golem, overcome Shaleleaf's force attacks and convincing duplicates, and reach a difficult match against Tyrus Goldtooth and Vesuvius. Tyrus controls lava, ice, flight, and other spells through her volcano tortoise, winning the opening round. Alex changes strategy, using Claygon's strength and leverage to overturn the vastly heavier familiar and force a close aerial finish. Claygon wins the match on points, then advances through the remaining field and takes the championship when the final opponent is surrendered. Alex receives a gold medal and prize money that can support his education and alchemical work. Tyrus leaves determined to do better in the Grand Battle, establishing her team as a serious future threat. Alex's group also recognizes that its growing list of public victories will encourage rival teams to target it.
Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)
The Games continue with mixed results for Alex's circle. Theresa places third in archery and receives an enchanted bowstring. Grimlock wins the Great Water Hunt decisively, while Theresa, Alex, and Brutus lose the Great Land Hunt almost immediately to an illusion specialist with superior scouting magic. Theresa answers that disappointment in the Grand Melee, where she, Thundar, and Grimlock defeat a crowded field and win first place. Their victories add wealth and valuable equipment but make the team an even more visible Grand Battle target. Alex also meets Amir Abu Saleh's graduate associates and notices nervous behavior among them, yet refuses to turn suspicion into an accusation without evidence. The returning champion Outcasts of the Divine Wind, Tyrus and Vesuvius, and several specialized teams all remain serious opponents. On the final morning, security concentrates around the stadium and the Grand Battle begins. At the same time, Keebus and Harmless move toward the concealed garden tunnels, expecting the event to draw attention away from campus.
Story so far - through chapter 76 (this book)
Alex's team gains an early lead in the Grand Battle through ambushes, flags, and coordinated attacks, but loses members as increasingly powerful rivals converge near the central mountain. The Outcasts reveal divine archery, Tyrus attacks with Vesuvius, and a hidden illusion user manipulates several clashes. Alex ensures that Tyrus is eliminated with him, leaving Isolde and her companion to preserve the team's accumulated score. Isolde defeats Derek after he ambushes the last two members in a cave. Tyrus's team finishes first, the Outcasts take second, and Alex's team secures third place. Away from the battlefield, Keebus hears an invisible spellcaster using unfamiliar words in the botanical gardens. He identifies the intruder as the demon summoner and warns Professor Salinger, who calls for Baelin. The Grand Battle is over, but the hidden attacker is now present on campus and the warning has made the threat immediate.
Story so far - through chapter 81 (this book)
The demon summoner opens portals around the island and stadium, releasing demons against competitors, staff, civilians, and the centaur priests. Alex and Baelin's warnings prevent complete surprise, while Baelin strengthens the defenders before pursuing the summoner in the botanical gardens. A scarred three-eyed demon notices Alex's unusual transportation magic and mistakes him for an unresolved figure. Alex names it Burnsaw and uses potions and battlefield improvisation to resist it. Burnsaw decides Alex is instead connected to that figure's power, then wounds his arm before Claygon destroys its manifested body and those of its allies. In the gardens, the summoner uses a life debt to compel a crystalline abyssal knight to delay Baelin. Baelin overwhelms the knight, but it destroys its own body to avoid capture and possible enslavement. Baelin's concealed servants seize the fleeing summoner, causing the portals to close. The assault ends with deaths and severe injuries, including a dead centaur priest and wounds to Alex, Isolde, and Vesuvius. Amir leaves campus, then turns himself in because of his connection to the captured attacker.
Story so far - through chapter 85 (this book)
The demon assault spreads across the island, stadium, and botanical gardens. Alex names the three-eyed attacker Burnsaw and uses potions and battlefield improvisation to resist it. Burnsaw concludes that Alex is connected to the power of the being it first mistook him for, then wounds his arm before Claygon destroys its manifested body and those of its allies. Baelin traps a crystalline abyssal knight that is delaying him under a life-debt command. The knight destroys its own body to avoid capture, while Baelin's hidden servants seize the fleeing summoner and close the portals. Defenders suffer deaths and serious injuries, but Alex's family and closest allies survive. Keebus's warning receives public credit for saving lives. The captive is identified as Leopold Richter, who claims violent attacks were necessary to prevent divine influence after his childhood in a predatory cult. Amir confesses that Leopold once saved him from sacrifice, creating the life debt that led him to conceal Leopold's crimes. Alex learns that finding Burnsaw again will be extremely difficult and begins studying demonic languages, hierarchies, and the unresolved identity the demon mentioned.
Story so far - through chapter 92 (this book)
Leopold is convicted of treason, mass murder, and abuse of wizardry, with disintegration set as his sentence. Amir receives fifteen years of hard labor followed by permanent banishment for concealing crimes that led to deaths. Generasi clears the attack sites, honors the fallen with a memorial, and awards the survivors and Keebus for their service. Alex receives his Grand Battle prize and resumes preparing for the delayed expedition. He successfully begins Life to Mana, while Claygon independently shields him and his books from rain in what may be the golem's first self-directed act. Baelin cautions that any developing intelligence remains uncertain and may be linked to dungeon cores or the Ravener. Alex's wounded arm heals fully, though he chooses to retain Burnsaw's scar. Baelin also recalls an old demonic request to find Hannah Sim, a woman who had humiliated an abyssal knight. Burnsaw's reaction suggests a possible connection between Hannah and the Traveler, but the search predates the Traveler's apparent birth by more than a century. The identity therefore remains only a lead.
Story so far - through chapter 98 (this book)
Alex returns to classes, completes Life to Mana, begins another summoning spell, and works with Thundar on an illusion that can conceal the Fool's mark. Theresa receives the second of her family's paired swords and a new expedition bow. Her parents accept the choices made by Alex, Theresa, and Selina, then depart Generasi for the Rhinian Empire. The expedition headquarters opens with stricter security, supplies, medical support, and procedures shaped by the betrayal within the original research group. Baelin leads the first force into Tameland through Luthering after confirming that local priests are absent under Generasi's agreement. Hiragi Makaira joins Alex's survey team as its medical blood mage. Alex, Theresa, Selina, Claygon, and their allies teleport into Luthering, ready to establish the Greymoor encampment and inspect their assigned territory. Their arrival does not go unnoticed. The Ravener senses the return of the person who controlled one of its dungeon cores and recognizes the anomalous mana signature accompanying him. It begins preparing a response, leaving the authorized expedition active but already threatened.
How does it end? (ending)
Leopold Richter's demon attack fails after Keebus exposes his position and Baelin captures him. Leopold is sentenced to disintegration for treason, mass murder, and abuse of wizardry. Amir Abu Saleh, who concealed Leopold's crimes because of a life debt, receives fifteen years of hard labor and permanent banishment. Alex, Selina, Theresa, and their close allies survive, although Alex keeps the scar Burnsaw left on his arm and several competitors require recovery. Burnsaw and the abyssal knight may both reform in their own domains. Claygon's apparent initiative remains unconfirmed but increasingly significant. Alex masters Life to Mana, pursues summoning and blood magic, and works with Thundar on hiding the Fool's mark. Theresa's parents return to the Rhinian Empire after accepting the couple's choices. Alex, Theresa, Selina, Khalik, Isolde, Thundar, Grimlock, Claygon, and Hiragi Makaira join the Greymoor mission. They teleport into priest-free Luthering to begin the survey. The Ravener immediately senses Alex and the anomalous mana connected to him, turning the expedition into an active confrontation.
