The fourth entry in the Mark of the Fool series follows Alex as Generasi's research expedition establishes a foothold in his home kingdom of Tameland, where a hidden church secretly hunts the missing Fool hero and a monstrous force called the Ravener quietly targets the expedition once it identifies Alex by name. While surveying the borderland region of Greymoor, Alex's team survives an ambush by an intelligent bog-dwelling hag, strikes a cautious pact with local fey, and continues developing magic to conceal his identity. When Tameland's celebrated heroes finally arrive to inspect the expedition, one of them recognizes Alex from an earlier encounter, threatening to unravel his disguise.
