The Ravener's return renewed Thameland's war and drew Alex into research and field operations connected to dungeon cores and Ravener spawn. His prior encounter with a depleted core showed that he could influence it, though the reason remained unknown. Generasi established an expedition at Greymoor, giving Alex and his allies a base for studying the threat. He also retained a connection to the Cave of the Traveler, whose portals and mysteries remained important. By the start of this volume, Alex's safety depends on keeping the Fool hidden while helping people who would consider him one of Uldar's marked heroes if they knew the truth.

The prisoners reveal that the cult and its witch collaborators hold more than a hundred dissenters for sacrifice, including Drestra's childhood friend Ffion. Alex designs a divided operation: his force uses the living core as bait at the Skull Pits, while Drestra and Hart infiltrate the depleted camp and free the captives. The ambush draws hundreds of enemies and their greater demon commander. Drestra reaches Ffion, kills the traitor leader, and signals that the prisoners are safe. At the Skull Pits, the commander resists magic and divine power, badly damages Claygon, and nearly overwhelms Alex, Theresa, and Cedric. Alex's deception allows Claygon to seize her returning war spear. Its own withering power weakens her, Hart cuts off her spellcasting hand, and Claygon destroys her manifested body. She departs with a promise of revenge rather than dying permanently. The defenders return to Crymlyn with the freed witches. Baelin arrives, identifies the captured spear as a dangerous artifact, and plans to summon the demon under controlled conditions before she can retaliate.

The result narrows access to Thameish followers of Uldar and shakes the faith of Carey, Cedric, Theresa, and others, while Alex continues hiding his own mark. Cedric, Drestra, and Hart secretly investigate the Cave of the Traveler for a route toward Uldar's realm. Alex returns to Generasi, repairs Claygon, and reaches third-tier summoning. Baelin summons the greater demon commander while concealing Alex from her. Instead of imposing a simple punishment, he makes a binding bargain: he will destroy four rival strongholds, and she will provide information connected to his long search. The agreement also keeps her forces from an undisclosed place for thirty-three years. Baelin expects the lead to take him into the hells and intends Alex to accompany him once Alex is much stronger. At the fortified Traveler's cave, Drestra enters the unexplored lower passages with two guards from Ulrich. Theresa, meanwhile, continues examining the paired swords inherited from Twinblade. Her professor detects a trace of related life force but no clear way for Theresa to awaken their power.

Drestra, Cedric, and Hart reveal to the Fae Lord that they kept a living dungeon core and can use it to create controlled Ravener spawn. They offer a renewable monster force and care for elderly Fae instead of mortal children. When the Fae Lord initially refuses, the heroes end negotiations rather than yield. He then accepts a binding pact: regular monster deliveries will earn Fae warriors, the heroes' armies may use protected Fae roads, and elderly changelings will receive care. His final battlefield vision remains unexplained. As the heroes prepare to travel through Fae gates, the Petrifier traces two usurpers to Greymoor. The completed research castle has extensive underground works, and the creature secretly positions two dungeon cores below it. Professor Jules begins supervised living-core experiments with Alex and Carey, limiting them to terrain work. The Petrifier forces its cores to produce an assault army. Spearflies and Bone Chargers break into the excavation tunnels, killing engineers and trapping Theresa's group between hostile spawn and unstable stone. The failing cores are forced to create Behemoths and Hives-as-One before launching a surface breach. Watcher Shaw orders Alex to defend the castle and evacuation route instead of entering the tunnels. Alex summons a broad defensive force, Isolde joins him, and Professor Jules remains until her people can escape. The courtyard ruptures beneath them as the main assault reaches the surface. The attackers repeatedly redirect toward Alex, confirming that this is a targeted strike rather than an ordinary dungeon expansion. Claygon destroys a gathered horde, but a Behemoth and Hive-as-One knock Alex unconscious. Elsewhere, the Asrai's ancient appeal brings the Thameish heroes and a blue-skinned Fae road warden toward Greymoor.

When Alex is immobilized, Claygon ignores an order to keep his distance and shields Alex, taking the Petrifier's rays until his clay body cracks. The eld tree deliberately trips the Petrifier with a root, allowing Alex, Claygon, Isolde, and the other defenders to incapacitate it. Its self-destruction cannot be stopped, so Claygon throws it far downwind before it explodes. Theresa's tunnel group reaches the courtyard and protects Alex as Drestra, Cedric, Hart, Thameish forces, and Fae allies arrive. Baelin breaks one tortured assault core, while the overloaded second core shatters. The defenders eliminate the remaining major spawn. Greymoor survives, but twenty defenders are dead in the courtyard and at least ten more in the tunnels.
