The seventh entry in the Mark of the Fool series opens with Alex and his companions trapped in a shifting hellish maze, pursued by a powerful demon intent on capturing them. Alex draws on Hannah's strange power to force the group toward a portal home, fighting through demonic forces to escape. Back in Generasi, he tells Baelin that Hannah is the same person as the Traveler, and the two consider what her survival beyond death might mean. Alex then turns to more ordinary concerns: a shipping partnership with an old acquaintance, further magical training with his allies, and the reopening of a family bakery whose grand opening is threatened by a sabotage campaign.
