In short (whole book)
Alex escapes Hell, strengthens his connection to Hannah's Traveler power, expands his businesses, and publicly demonstrates spell-free teleportation while his allies prosper at the Games. He becomes engaged to Theresa, helps bind Brutus to her as a blood familiar, and supports Selina as she learns she did not cause their parents' fatal fire and begins fire magic. Uldar's hidden church abducts Carey and Merzhin to protect its control of the Ravener cycle. Alex's rescue force attacks Uldar's Rise. Carey dies destroying much of the sanctuary, then briefly returns through Hannah's power to save her friends. Claygon emerges rebuilt in iron, and the First Apostle escapes with Isis and other followers. Carey guides the survivors into Uldar's sanctum, where they discover that the Fool's mark apparently began as the Mark of the General. They finally find Uldar already dead.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Alex is a Generasi mage, crafter, and summoner who secretly bears the Mark of the Fool, one of the five marks tied to Thameland's recurring struggle against the Ravener. Theresa, Selina, Claygon, and Brutus form his household, while Baelin mentors him and a wider circle of students and Uldar's heroes support him. Alex's group has learned to control living dungeon cores, a discovery with the potential to change the Ravener cycle. They also found evidence of a hidden branch of Uldar's church and of an earlier Fool who tried to remove a mark that may have been altered. Hannah Kim, the Traveler, crossed between worlds before her death. Alex has inherited access to some of her strange teleportation power, and prayers offered to her appear to strengthen it. At the start of this volume, Alex, Claygon, Thundar, and hired companions are still escaping a Hell expedition while Baelin and his cabal fight elsewhere.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
Alex leads the trapped expedition through a rapidly changing Hell maze, using Hannah's power to overcome some of the Fool mark's interference with his teleportation. A greater demon and its army block the portal. The half-orc stone-thrower sacrifices herself to wound the demon, and Rip suffers a shattered thigh. Alex forcibly teleports the demon into position, where Claygon and the Spirit Killer destroy it with combined fire. The survivors cross the portal and seal it. Baelin finishes his own battle, returns to the group, and arranges a divine restoration that heals Rip. Alex pays the surviving mercenaries and divides the dead companions' shares among them. The tattoo-bound former king leaves with hopes of reclaiming his realm someday. The Spirit Killer returns to his home world but entrusts most of his payment to Alex because enemies still pursue him. The expedition ends with lasting obligations and new allies, while Baelin owes favors to the archwizards who supported his campaign.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Alex tells Baelin that the Traveler was Hannah Kim, a woman from another world, and that he spoke with her spirit. They conclude that her old power, centuries of prayer, and the Traveler's cave may have formed an unprecedented conduit to her after death. Alex and Theresa's redirected prayers may be helping Hannah ascend. Baelin advises secrecy and cannot lead the investigation into the earlier Fool or Uldar's hidden church because of his cabal debts. Back in Generasi, Lucia returns as a successful alchemist and shipping owner. Alex begins a trial partnership with her, offering purpose-built labor golems and linking her network to Taraka Shale's supply needs. Prayer helps Alex touch Hannah's power more reliably. Meanwhile, the First Apostle summons the Third Apostle, Isis, and orders covert surveillance of the Traveler's cave and Greymoor. Drestra, Cedric, and Hart agree to help Alex investigate even though their inquiry may implicate Uldar.
Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)
Carey's faith in Uldar weakens as the deity remains silent, while prayer to the Traveler brings her comfort. Alex's companions train, gather dungeon-core material, and prepare new businesses for the Games. The hidden church places Greymoor under animal surveillance. Alex completes his second year with excellent results and opens the Roth Family Bakery with Troy, Lorraine, Theresa, Selina, and Claygon. Grimloch becomes its first paying customer, followed by Taraka's workers and ordinary passersby. A former owner then hires actors to spread false food-poisoning claims. Alex and Khalik's dryad allies counter the accusations with public samples, and Alex exposes inconsistencies in a complainant's story. Baelin arrives with city officials, and an actor confesses. Guards arrest the organizer and accomplices. The attempted sabotage produces a rush of customers, and the bakery sells out, establishing strong demand.
Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)
Alex befriends Carey over their shared doubts about Uldar and tells her part of Hannah's story. Carey increasingly turns toward the Traveler but withholds the dungeon-core truth from Merzhin, who remains devoted to Uldar. Alex's bakery and golem ventures grow quickly, and Lucia begins using his stone labor golems. Khalik alarms his friends with a secret three-night vigil, then reveals that his injuries came from completing a dryad engagement rite. His parents are due to visit during the Games. Alex decides to propose to Theresa. He starts teaching twelve-year-old Selina magic after she demonstrates exceptional understanding of spell structures. As the Games approach, Theresa shows an unexplained burst of speed during training. Alex finally learns that Hannah's power requires him to focus directly on his starting point and destination. He teleports without spellcraft for the first time, but a hidden church operative witnesses the feat.
Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)
Khalik introduces his friends to King Aksuma and Queen Ishtar, who receive them warmly but delay a decision about his engagement. The Games begin with a memorial for those killed in the prior year's demon attack. Khalik and his eagle familiar win the lightweight proxy division. Grimloch wins the foot race, and a goblin student guides the heavily enhanced crocodile Harmless through the middleweight bracket. Harmless defeats a versatile thorncap in the final by combining physical power with his master's carefully conserved magic. The group's bakery pavilion draws large crowds, and their wagers produce substantial returns. Queen Ishtar takes a particular interest in Selina, who senses an unexplained heat-like connection to her.
Story so far - through chapter 61 (this book)
Claygon reaches the super-heavyweight final, but the expected rematch with Tyrus and Vesuvius is disrupted by masked entrant Magnus Echever and his force construct Prime. Magnus reveals himself as Alex's former professor Harsha Ram. Prime is powerful but requires constant control, drains Ram's mana, cannot receive supporting spells, and transmits damaging feedback. Alex repeatedly teleports Claygon around it until Claygon destroys the construct just before time expires. The victory validates Claygon and Taraka's golem work, though Alex recognizes improved Force Construct magic as a future competitor. Grimloch wins the water hunt, Theresa wins archery, and Alex's summons neutralize the previous champion's magical scouting in the land hunt. Alex's team captures the quarry almost immediately. The group accepts an invitation to celebrate privately with Khalik's parents, while Queen Ishtar's unusual connection with Selina remains unexplained.
Story so far - through chapter 71 (this book)
Queen Ishtar confirms that she and Selina share a fire affinity. Selina admits fearing that her latent power caused the blaze that killed her parents, but Alex and the queen explain that an untrained infant could not have cast the spell. Selina chooses to face fire and quickly learns to create and control it. In the Grand Battle, rival teams unite against Alex and steal his staff, but he reveals spell-free personal teleportation and a remote form of Planar Doorway. He retrieves the staff, relocates allies across the field, and turns the ambush into a rout. His team wins by a vast margin. Khalik's parents approve his engagement, and Alex records the celebration with Hannah's artifact. He then takes Theresa and Brutus to the beach where the couple had their first date and prepares to propose.
Story so far - through chapter 78 (this book)
Theresa accepts Alex's marriage proposal. Alex also offers a prepared blood-familiar ritual that could extend Brutus's life and strengthen him, though the bond would endanger either survivor if the other died. After considering Brutus's limited lifespan and their hazardous future, Theresa chooses the link. Brutus gains permanent bone plates, a much larger armored combat form, bladed claws and fangs, a heavy tail, selective silence, and targeted sonic attacks. Theresa gains heightened senses through their shared life force. Elsewhere, agents of Uldar's hidden church work with Ravener spawn to identify and capture perceived threats. Merzhin confronts Carey about her failing faith. She acknowledges her doubts but does not reveal the dungeon-core secret. Unseen hands then silence Carey and pull her through solid stone.
Story so far - through chapter 87 (this book)
A hidden-church priest convinces the isolated Merzhin that Carey was taken for protection and draws him toward the secret order. The captors move Carey underground while Ravener servants slaughter a patrol as bait for Alex's group. Alex instead assembles a countertrap. Theresa and Brutus expose invisible petrifiers, and Reaper precisely removes their self-destruct organs so several Ravener spawn can be captured alive. Carey wakes inside Uldar's Rise. The First Apostle and Isis admit that the order knows how to control dungeon cores and deliberately preserves the Ravener cycle. They cite Cain, a past Fool whose alleged monster army caused a disastrous cycle, but their account remains unverified. The First Apostle compels Carey to identify others who know the secret until Hannah's protection interrupts him. Merzhin begins doubting the order. Professor Jules uses organs from the captured spawn to create an eye finder, which finally points toward Carey and gives the rescuers a trail.
Story so far - through chapter 91 (this book)
Watcher Hill plans a stealth extraction, with Alex ready to teleport the captives out and a larger force waiting if the rescue fails. The eye finder leads Alex, Drestra, Thundar, and Claygon to a warded forest that produces thoughts urging them to leave. They resist and locate Uldar's Rise, a hidden enclave beneath an escarpment. Thundar and Drestra agree to a date after the mission. Inside, Merzhin becomes increasingly troubled that the order lives securely while Thameland suffers. He agrees to free Carey, but the assault begins before they can escape. Hill's invisible Watchers enter the enclave, only for a concealed ward to expose them. One Watcher dies and two are badly wounded. Alex extracts the injured and brings in the strike force. Drestra breaks the barrier in dragon form and releases blood drakes controlled through a captured dungeon core. The covert rescue becomes an open battle.
Story so far - through chapter 96 (this book)
The First Apostle reveals that he was a Chosen in an ancient cycle and recognizes Alex as the Fool. He traps the rescuers inside the escarpment and imposes an interdiction that stops most non-priests from using mana. Alex's Traveler teleportation and Claygon's fire still function. Merzhin frees Carey and rejects the order's attack, but a priest fatally stabs her. Carey combines dungeon-core material with chaos essence and detonates it, dying as much of Uldar's Rise is destroyed. Hannah meets her spirit and briefly empowers her to intervene. Carey saves Alex, Merzhin cancels the interdiction, and Claygon emerges from the destruction restored in an iron body with stronger fire. Alex teleports away the First Apostle's arm. The First Apostle escapes with Isis and surviving followers to a northern island. Carey's fading spirit then directs the victorious survivors toward an entrance to Uldar's sanctum.
Story so far - through chapter 98 (this book)
Alex refuses to wait for Baelin and leads the survivors into Uldar's sanctum while Carey's spirit can still help them. He stops an argument among the heroes over secrecy, abandonment, and responsibility for Carey's death. Alex and Carey combine the Traveler's power to open the way. Murals show hero groups across many cycles, but older images place a figure bearing the Mark of the General where the Fool should be. The General leads the other heroes, yet the figure's identity has been erased. Alex recalls evidence that both his mark and an earlier Fool's mark were altered, and concludes that the Mark of the General was likely the Fool mark's original form. The group follows a welcoming voice to the throne room expecting guidance. Instead, they find Uldar seated on his throne, dead from an old wound. The survivors leave without answers about the altered mark, the Ravener cycle, or who changed the system.
How does it end? (ending)
Carey dies while detonating dungeon-core material and chaos essence inside Uldar's Rise, destroying much of the hidden church's sanctuary. Hannah briefly empowers Carey's spirit, allowing her to protect Alex's force and direct the survivors onward. Claygon returns from near destruction with an iron body, while Alex removes the First Apostle's arm and Merzhin ends the anti-mana interdiction. The First Apostle, Isis, and surviving followers escape to a northern island. Alex, Theresa, Drestra, Thundar, Hart, Cedric, Merzhin, Claygon, and their allies survive the battle. Alex and Theresa are engaged, Theresa and Brutus are life-linked, Khalik's engagement has royal approval, and Thundar and Drestra have begun dating. In Uldar's sanctum, murals show that the Mark of the General preceded the Mark of the Fool. The group then finds Uldar dead on his throne. The altered mark, the Ravener cycle, the hidden church, and the Stalker's interest in Alex remain unresolved.
