Mavericks

By Craig Alanson

The sixth entry in the Expeditionary Force series opens aboard the Flying Dutchman as a mysterious energy virus disables the ship's power systems, forcing Skippy to orchestrate a desperate evacuation in which the crew must survive outside the ship using nothing but manually wound suits. On the human colony world of Paradise, meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Emily Perkins leads a small team of soldiers and pilots through a realistic Ruhar war-game exercise, using unconventional tactics to outperform expectations despite being outmatched on paper. Their success earns the team an official designation as the Mavericks and a demanding assignment: prove that humans can hold their own aboard a Ruhar warship during an extended off-world training cruise.
