A Deal Me In machinist's mate rescued from an escape pod. He assesses the carrier's surviving machinery and confirms that its jump coils and capacitors remain usable, giving Perkins's group a possible route to safety.

A pilot supporting the assault on the Camp Alpha research base. The pilot attacks an improvised Kristang missile vehicle after it opens fire on Perkins's dropship.

A Keeper who knew the Mavericks at Fort Rakowski. He rejects the Kristang loyalists at Camp Alpha and asks the Mavericks to rescue him, prompting the loyalists to attack before David Chica and Jesse intervene.

Sure Thing captain (Supporting)

The captain of the financially endangered Jeraptha merchant ship Sure Thing. The crew accepts a wager-backed search for Deal Me In and follows evidence of the carrier's surviving section into Kristang-controlled space.

General Lynn (Supporting)

The UNEF liaison general on Paradise who receives news that Perkins survived and that infected Keepers may be approaching. She must represent the human population as Ruhar authorities prepare an emergency quarantine.

Admiral Tanavan (Supporting)

The Ruhar battle-group commander with authority over the developing bioweapon emergency and the power to enforce strict confinement measures on Paradise.

Bishop (Protagonist)

Joe Bishop, commander of the Flying Dutchman. He helps restart the first disabled dropship, finds a way to eject the concentrated energy-virus contamination, and turns the restored ship toward the threat facing Paradise.

Lieutenant Samantha Reed (Minor)

A Condor pilot whose worn refueling equipment destroys one engine and cripples the other inside a gas giant. She keeps the descending craft under enough control to cooperate with an improvised rescue.

Captain Porter (Minor)

The pilot of the Condor sent to rescue Samantha Reed's disabled craft. Porter must hold position in the gas giant while Bishop attempts to connect the two ships.

Cornpone (Supporting)

The nickname Bishop uses for his close friend Jesse Coulter. Records from the Mavericks show that Jesse intends to propose to Shauna Jarrett.

Major Zhao (Minor)

First appears in chapter 30

A Chinese army major remembered from Adams's Kristang captivity. Adams defended her when she was injured, and Zhao was subsequently tortured to death, leaving Adams with enduring survivor guilt.

Ranger Lauren Poole (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 31

A member of Giraud's stealth boarding team and Bishop's unofficial bodyguard. She approaches one of the infected Keeper dropships through a meteor cloud in sealed combat armor.

Colonel Chisolm (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 32

The de facto leader of the captured Keepers and a committed Kristang loyalist. In quarantine, he learns that his team was unknowingly sent to spread a pathogen and that every Keeper carries a delayed kill implant.

Lieutenant Nigel Green (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 32

A British Keeper among the captured infiltration force. Less committed than Chisolm, he reacts to evidence that Earth survived and that his family may still be alive.
