Midnight recap

In short (whole book)

With Abyssinia active after her resurrection, Skulduggery and Valkyrie try to trace her plans while Omen Darkly continues navigating Corrival Academy. Cadaverous Gant, a former Anti-Sanctuary operative whose magic gives him control inside his home, turns the conflict into a personal ordeal. He kidnaps Valkyrie's little sister Alice and gives Valkyrie until midnight to find her, driving her through a sequence of traps and distorted spaces. Valkyrie reaches Alice and Gant dies in the confrontation, but the rescue exposes the deeper problem Valkyrie has feared since the Darquesse crisis: Alice is alive without a complete soul. Elsewhere, Abyssinia succeeds in reaching Caisson, the damaged son she has long sought, and takes him from confinement. The immediate kidnapping is over, but Valkyrie must now find a way to make Alice whole while Abyssinia's restored family gives the larger enemy campaign new momentum.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Five years after Darquesse's defeat, Valkyrie Cain returned to Ireland from a self-imposed exile marked by guilt, depression, and recurring trauma. She resumed her partnership with Skulduggery and helped investigate the Anti-Sanctuary, with assistance from overlooked Corrival Academy student Omen Darkly. They freed Skulduggery after the Neoteric Smoke corrupted his judgment, but failed to stop the enemy's main objective. The healer Melior was forced to rebuild the powerful sorcerer Abyssinia from her preserved heart, and she escaped alive with her followers. Valkyrie stayed in Ireland rather than withdrawing again. Her little sister Alice remains the most important part of her family life, while Valkyrie privately carries fear about the consequences of Alice's death and restoration during the earlier Darquesse crisis.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

Skulduggery and Valkyrie pursue signs of Abyssinia and the remnants of the Anti-Sanctuary, whose leader now has a living body and the freedom to act. Valkyrie is back in the field but has not recovered from the anxiety and guilt that controlled her years away. Her relationship with her young sister Alice remains a refuge from that life. At Corrival Academy, Omen continues to be overlooked beside his brother Auger, yet his earlier service to the detectives means that danger and responsibility no longer pass him by entirely. Abyssinia's activities suggest that her immediate priority is not a public attack but the recovery of someone connected to her past.

Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)

Cadaverous Gant, no longer content to serve as one of Abyssinia's operatives, acts on his grievance against Valkyrie. He abducts Alice and establishes a deadline at midnight, forcing Valkyrie to follow the path he has prepared if she wants her sister returned alive. Gant's Neoteric discipline makes any place he accepts as home into his territory: within it he can stretch distance, alter surroundings, and make ordinary escape impossible. Skulduggery searches for ways to reach Valkyrie and Alice, but Gant has designed the contest to isolate Valkyrie and use her fear for her family against her.

Story so far - through chapter 52 (this book)

Valkyrie follows Gant's trail through escalating traps, knowing that every delay brings Alice closer to the deadline. The distorted spaces under Gant's control turn the rescue into a contest of endurance as well as magic, and Valkyrie's existing trauma makes his psychological pressure especially effective. Separate from the kidnapping, Omen and Never continue dealing with the consequences of the Anti-Sanctuary's influence at Corrival Academy. Sebastian Tao also advances his quiet effort to gather a society dedicated to finding Darquesse, convinced that her return will eventually be necessary.

Story so far - through chapter 70 (this book)

As midnight approaches, Valkyrie penetrates further into the environment Gant controls and closes the distance to Alice. Gant's advantage depends on treating the battleground as his home, so direct strength alone cannot defeat him; Valkyrie must survive rules he can change while keeping her attention on the hostage rather than his provocations. At the same time, Skulduggery's pursuit of Abyssinia reveals that the resurrected sorcerer's search centres on Caisson, a son who has spent years imprisoned and psychologically damaged. Even if Alice is recovered, Abyssinia is close to achieving the family reunion that motivates this stage of her campaign.

Story so far - through chapter 82 (this book)

Valkyrie reaches Alice before the deadline and the sisters survive Gant's final trap. Cadaverous Gant dies in the confrontation, ending his private campaign and allowing Alice to return to her family. The rescue does not resolve everything Valkyrie fears about her sister. Alice's soul was restored incompletely after Darquesse killed her years ago, and Valkyrie now has to face the damage rather than merely keep it secret. Meanwhile, Abyssinia reaches Caisson and takes her long-confined son with her, strengthening the personal core of her movement. Skulduggery and Valkyrie therefore end the night with Alice alive but with both a new quest to make her whole and Abyssinia's continuing threat ahead of them. Sebastian's plan to recover Darquesse also remains in motion.

How does it end? (ending)

Valkyrie reaches Alice before Cadaverous Gant's deadline and survives the shifting territory in which his home-based magic gives him control. Gant dies in the final confrontation, ending his attempt to punish Valkyrie through her sister. Alice is brought home alive, but the ordeal leaves Valkyrie confronting the older fear she has kept hidden: Alice's soul was not restored whole after Darquesse killed her years earlier. Saving Alice physically has therefore not solved the deeper damage. Skulduggery and Valkyrie also fail to end Abyssinia's campaign. Abyssinia reaches Caisson, the son she has been seeking, and removes him from the confinement in which he has spent years. She now has both her restored power and the family member at the centre of her plans. Omen remains connected to the detectives, while Sebastian Tao continues assembling the Darquesse Society for an attempted return of Darquesse.
