Stranded underground with four dwarves, Elaine abandons the failed search for Toke and leads the survivors to a fortified dwarven city. Her healing saves many residents, but the ruling Council plans to retain her for decades. After an assassination attempt and changeling murders, she escapes alone through the mines. Lost for months, Elaine discovers the wounded dragon Lun'Kat, secretly heals her under the demands of her oath, and flees with a living, unidentified egg. She gains an untested age-reversal skill, recovers her lost Sentinel badge, and joins Serondes, Aegion, and Awarthril, three immortal elves traveling with Kiyaya and Cordamo. Their Shimagu mission pauses to kill the hydra that destroyed Tyrus's herd. Elaine reaches Dawn Sentinel level 420 and begins a relationship with Serondes. A final account reveals that Lun'Kat knowingly allowed Elaine to leave, while the captive angel Rostellio remains imprisoned in the dragon's lair.

Previously: Elaine was established as a human healer known as Dawn Sentinel. She enters this volume carrying that identity from her earlier travels.

Elaine and four dwarves are stranded in deep mine passages after Lula's death and Toke's disappearance. Elaine takes command, secures water and shelter, and leads the group back toward Toke's trail. They overcome a powerful slime, but flooding destroys the tracks. Encounters with traps and an organized orc patrol reinforce how little they understand the mine. After the group kills an orc and retreats, the dwarves conclude that Toke is probably dead and shift their goal from rescue to escape. Their upward route offers little food and reveals deliberately sealed exits. Ned begins acting strangely, suffers memory gaps, and displays healing that does not match Elaine's expectations. A sophisticated trap injures him even though its makers claim their devices exclude dwarves. Soon afterward, Yurok and a dwarven patrol find the survivors and escort them through extensive defenses into a city. Elaine is no longer trapped in the wild tunnels, but she now suspects that Ned may not be what he appears to be.

Inside the dwarven city, Korun assigns Thorin and Yurok to guard Elaine and Ned while orc saboteurs attack healers and infrastructure. Elaine reports her concerns about Ned, but he disappears before the proposed checks settle the question. She then treats large numbers of military and civilian casualties. Her first broad healing removes a patient's metal augmentation, forcing her to study how dwarven implants join living tissue. With a volunteer's help, she develops a precise method that repairs injuries while preserving intact metal. Exhausted after sustained work, Elaine is ordered to rest. When she wakes, she has advanced to Dawn Sentinel level 365 and begins seeking supplies and a route home. Korun initially discusses travel arrangements, then conveys the Council of Elders' decision: Elaine is expected to remain in the city, content and healing, for the estimated twenty to thirty years of the war. She hides her alarm and starts planning an escape while appearing cooperative.

Elaine uses her guarded class advancement to choose Butterfly Mystic as her second class, favoring growth and magical flexibility over options centered on combat or a fixed identity. Her upgraded radiance abilities give her sustainable flight and help her reshape Supernova into the controllable butterfly swarm Kaleidoscope. She continues healing casualties and quietly gathers clothing, food, equipment, and information for an escape. An orc projectile tears through her torso, but her persistent self-healing saves her. The city responds with tighter confinement, confirming her fear that protection and imprisonment have become inseparable. Soon afterward, Korun orders Elaine, Thorin, Drin, Fik, and Glifir examined because an ooze-mirror changeling has copied murder victims. They survive the test. Learning that the Council considered executing the group strengthens Elaine's resolve. Equipped with new armor and a stealth skill, she distracts her guards, turns invisible, and begins an unauthorized flight toward the mines.

Elaine's escape triggers a citywide search. She breaks concealment to heal injured dwarves, then breaches the defenses and flees into the deep mines without harming her pursuers. Alone and profoundly lost, she survives spiders, scarce food, and months of navigation through worked tunnels, natural caves, and melted stone. A persistent underground predator drives her through a powerful illusion and into Lun'Kat's concealed lair. The dragon is asleep but badly wounded and poisoned. Elaine decides her oath requires treatment, so she hides among the dragon's collections and uses sunlight, moonlight, and mana drawn from the lair's arcanite to heal from a distance. The process takes days, during which she avoids Lun'Kat and the lair's strange attendants and captive beings. After repairing much of the damage and purging the poison, Elaine takes a hot red egg marked with gold cracks from a clutch in the collection. She escapes the hidden lair carrying the unidentified egg, leaving the recovering dragon behind.

Healing Lun'Kat raises Elaine to Dawn Sentinel level 418 and grants her The Stars Never Fade, an active ability that may reverse age. She refuses to test it because its control is uncertain and she fears a lingering curse. A stone creature then damages her armor and separates her from her Sentinel badge. Elaine spends seven weeks searching, keeping the stolen egg warm until she recovers the badge and resumes traveling north. Her solitude ends when she encounters Serondes, Aegion, and Awarthril, three immortal elves accompanied by Kiyaya and Cordamo. The group welcomes her, and she heals Serondes's broken arm. They explain that they serve the Tempest Shard Council and are hunting Shimagu, parasitic oozes that take control of bodies while leaving learned skills inaccessible. The elves cannot identify Elaine's egg, but an attempted bite from Cordamo triggers an Egg Incubation skill and confirms a way to care for it. Because their route approaches the low experience zone, Elaine agrees to travel with them while they complete the Shimagu assignment.

The elven party supplies Elaine with clean clothing, practical care, and protection after her long isolation. Awarthril formally recruits her as a healer whose presence may force hidden Shimagu to reveal themselves. Elaine discloses her untested age-reversal skill, but it cannot affect Kiyaya, whose finite lifespan remains a concern for Awarthril. Serondes warns Elaine that a power capable of extending other lives would attract dangerous attention. As they travel, the elves teach her about immortal advancement, companions, and the value of delaying a third class. Elaine also tells Serondes, Aegion, and Awarthril that she originally came from Earth. Two weeks into the northward journey, the group rescues Tyrus, a wounded centaur whose herd was destroyed by a hydra. Elaine heals him, and the elves quickly learn enough of his language to hear his account. Their immediate priority changes. Rather than continue directly toward the reported Shimagu, they divert to eliminate the hydra because it has been hunting people.

At the hydra's swamp, Serondes builds a temporary lava fortress and Tyrus departs to search for another herd. Awarthril scouts the level-700-range monster and leads the attack, accepting Elaine as flying medical support. Aegion fires from extreme range through his shared sight with Cordamo, Kiyaya strengthens the group, and Serondes uses lava to impede the hydra's regeneration. After the first assault ends in a protected skyship crash, the hydra ambushes the party with acid and miasma. Serondes and Cordamo trap it in a poisonous sandstorm, Awarthril binds it, and Serondes removes all its heads. The level-734 hydra dies, and Elaine restores her injured companions. Elaine reaches Dawn Sentinel level 420, replaces Lantern with the destructive Solar Flare, and begins a mutual romantic relationship with Serondes. She remains with the elves, incubating the living but unidentified egg and delaying her third class while their Shimagu mission remains ahead. In a final account from Lun'Kat's lair, the captive angel Rostellio reveals that the dragon knowingly accepted Elaine's healing and allowed her to escape with an item she could afford to lose. Rostellio remains bound, and the God of Light will not directly challenge Lun'Kat to free him.

Elaine remains with Serondes, Aegion, Awarthril, Kiyaya, and Cordamo after the hydra hunt. The hydra is dead, Tyrus has gone to seek another herd, and the elven party still intends to pursue the Shimagu assignment before helping Elaine travel toward home. Elaine is level 420 in Dawn Sentinel, has replaced Lantern with Solar Flare, and continues to delay her third class. She and Serondes have just begun a mutual romantic relationship. The egg taken from Lun'Kat is alive and still incubating, but its nature is unknown. Elaine's age-reversal skill remains untested and could place her at risk if others learn what it may do. In Lun'Kat's hidden lair, Rostellio remains bound by another captor. The God of Light knows where he is but will not pay the cost of confronting the dragon there. Lun'Kat has accepted the healing Elaine gave her and permitted the theft as a tolerable loss, leaving both the dragon and her prisoners as unresolved dangers.
