Moreta characters

By Anne McCaffrey

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Moreta (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The Weyrwoman of Fort Weyr and rider of the senior queen Orlith. Moreta is an experienced dragonhealer who takes her responsibilities seriously but welcomes the rare freedom of a Gather. She is practical, compassionate, and accustomed to acting decisively when riders or dragons need care.

Orlith (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Moreta's golden queen dragon, pregnant with a clutch at the opening of the story. Their close bond lets Orlith share Moreta's concerns, while the queen's condition limits how freely they can travel together.

Alessan (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The recently confirmed Lord Holder of Ruatha, still carrying grief from his wife's death. Alessan is determined to restore Ruatha's celebrated runnerbeast bloodlines and uses the Gather races to demonstrate the Hold's recovery.

Leri (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Fort's former senior Weyrwoman and the rider of the old queen Holth. Leri has yielded formal authority to Moreta but remains a candid adviser, bringing long experience and a dry steadiness to Weyr affairs.

Holth (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Leri's elderly golden dragon. Holth is no longer Fort's senior queen, yet she and Leri remain respected members of the Weyr and retain the discipline of a seasoned pair.

Sh'gall (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Fort Weyr's Weyrleader and rider of bronze Kadith. Sh'gall is formal, proud, and strongly conscious of rank; his strained partnership with Moreta complicates the Weyr's leadership even before the wider emergency develops.

B'lerion (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A bronze rider from High Reaches Weyr and rider of Nabeth. B'lerion is an old friend of Moreta's, sociable and willing to help, and his visits connect Fort with the other Weyrs.

Oklina (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

Alessan's younger sister, who helps shoulder Ruatha's duties. Oklina is observant, capable, and deeply interested in dragons and Weyr life, although her immediate obligations lie with her brother's Hold.

Tuero (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

A journeyman harper at Ruatha whose adaptable skills become valuable when ordinary Hold routines fail. Tuero can carry messages, organize people, and offer Alessan practical help without standing on ceremony.

Capiam (Protagonist)

First appears in chapter 4

The Masterhealer of Pern. Capiam approaches the spreading sickness as both a healer and an investigator, comparing reports from separate Holds and insisting on cooperation across political boundaries.

Desdra (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

A highly capable healer who works closely with Capiam as the epidemic expands. Desdra combines clinical courage with a clear eye for evidence and is prepared to test the Healer Hall's conclusions in practice.

Tolocamp (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

The Lord Holder of Fort, responsible for one of Pern's largest populations. Tolocamp is protective of his authority and household, and his reluctance to accept disruptive measures makes coordination harder for the healers.
