Centuries before the events of Dragonflight, Fort Weyrwoman Moreta attends a Ruatha Gather just as a lethal epidemic begins moving among Pern's Holds. Moreta, Lord Alessan of Ruatha, Masterhealer Capiam, and their allies trace the disease, impose quarantines, care for the sick, and use blood from survivors to prepare protective serum. Dragons let the healers distribute vaccine at a speed no ground transport could match, but the campaign must be extended to the runnerbeasts on which recovery depends. Because her queen Orlith is guarding a clutch, Moreta borrows Leri's Holth and uses repeated time-shifts to cover the final routes. Moreta and Holth are lost between on their last journey. Leri keeps the bereaved Orlith alive until the clutch hatches and Oklina Impresses its young queen; Orlith then dies. The epidemic is broken, but Alessan and Fort must rebuild without Moreta, whose sacrifice becomes one of Pern's defining legends.

This is a self-contained historical story set during Pern's Sixth Pass, many centuries before Dragonflight and the main Benden Weyr sequence. Thread already falls from the sky in recurring Passes, and dragonriders protect the Holds by burning it before it can burrow into the ground. Moreta is remembered by later generations as a legendary Fort Weyrwoman, but the people in this story are living through the events behind that legend without knowing its ending.

Fort Weyrwoman Moreta leaves her pregnant queen Orlith at the Weyr and visits Ruatha's Gather, where the newly installed Lord Alessan is showcasing the Hold's runnerbeasts. Moreta enjoys the races, renews friendships with riders such as B'lerion, and finds herself drawn to Alessan, whose energy masks recent grief. The celebration is shadowed by troubling signs among animals and travelers. What first appears to be an isolated sickness begins to threaten a crowded gathering whose guests will soon disperse toward many different Holds.

Illness follows the Gather guests home and erupts at several settlements. Ruatha is hit hard, while cases reach Fort Weyr despite the natural separation between dragonriders and Holders. Moreta turns her dragonhealing experience toward human patients, organizes isolation, and works with the Weyr's healers even as Fort's leadership is strained by sickness and Sh'gall's rigid temperament. Reports reaching Masterhealer Capiam show that the outbreaks are connected and spreading far faster than ordinary travel should allow. Quarantine becomes essential, but enforcing it across independent Holds requires persuasion, reliable messages, and dragon transport.

Capiam and Desdra compare the epidemic's path and recognize that Gather traffic and runnerbeasts have carried the infection across Pern. The Healer Hall coordinates treatment while recovered patients become vital to developing a protective serum. Moreta's immunity and her ability to direct dragonriders make her an important link between the medical effort and the Weyrs. At Ruatha, Alessan, Oklina, Tuero, and the survivors keep the Hold functioning through heavy losses. Resistance from leaders such as Tolocamp shows that the disease is not the only obstacle: the healers must overcome fear, rank, and local self-interest before a continent-wide response can work.

The Healer Hall turns evidence into an organized vaccination campaign, using blood from survivors to protect people who have not yet been exposed. Dragonriders carry serum, healers, and instructions between widely separated communities, making possible a response that ground travel could never deliver in time. Moreta manages Fort's part of the operation while watching over Orlith's approaching clutch. Her partnership with Alessan deepens as they work through Ruatha's losses and confront the practical needs of recovery. The immediate human crisis begins to ease, but the work remains fragile and depends on every Weyr accepting routes and timings set for Pern as a whole.

With the first vaccination effort taking hold, the healers confront the danger to Pern's surviving runnerbeasts, which are essential for transport, farming, and breeding. A second distribution plan must reach many scattered herds almost at once. Moreta cannot take Orlith away from the queen's clutch, so Leri offers the old queen Holth for the work. Time travel can let one rider cover routes whose schedules overlap, but every jump between places a physical and mental burden on rider and dragon. Moreta prepares to carry out the final assignments despite that cost, because delaying would leave isolated regions and their stock unprotected.

Moreta and Holth use carefully timed jumps to deliver the runnerbeast vaccine across Pern, completing routes that would otherwise be impossible. Their work gives the Holds a chance to preserve the animals needed for recovery, but the pair never returns from the last journey: exhaustion and the accumulated danger of their time-shifts leave them lost between. Alessan and Fort receive the news after the campaign has succeeded. Orlith, maddened by the loss of her rider, wants to follow Moreta, but the dragon's clutch has begun to hatch. Leri, grieving Holth herself, keeps Orlith focused long enough for the hatchlings to Impress, including a new queen who chooses Oklina. Once the clutch is safe, Orlith dies. The plague recedes and Pern begins rebuilding, while Moreta's death is transformed into the enduring legend of her ride.

To complete the vaccination routes quickly enough, Moreta rides Leri's queen Holth while Orlith remains with her clutch. Moreta and Holth make repeated journeys through space and time, but they do not return from the final leg: both are lost between after saving communities that could not otherwise have been reached. Alessan and the people of Fort learn that the woman whose work checked the epidemic will never come home. Orlith is devastated by Moreta's death, yet Leri persuades the bereaved queen to remain until her eggs hatch. Oklina Impresses the new queen from the clutch, preserving Fort's future; only then does Orlith surrender to her loss. Pern survives the plague through the combined work of healers, Holders, and dragonriders, while Moreta's fatal ride passes into history as an act of service rather than the triumphant adventure later generations remember in song.
