A Red remade into a Gold, the hidden champion of the rebellion known as the Rising. Once celebrated among the ruling caste as a great commander, he has fallen into the hands of his enemies and endured long imprisonment and torment for his secret. Grief-worn and hardened but unbroken in purpose, he still carries the memory of his executed wife Eo and the dream of freeing his people from the color-coded tyranny of the Society.

The brilliant, principled daughter of the late ArchGovernor of Mars and sister of the treacherous Jackal. A formidable leader and tactician, she is bound to Darrow by love and by hard history, and she dreams of a reformed order rather than mere revenge. Her intelligence, legitimacy among the Golds, and moral seriousness make her one of the most important figures on any side of the coming war.

Darrow's fiercest and most loyal friend and the leader of the Howlers. Small, savage, and unshakably devoted, he has kept the flame of the rebellion alive through its darkest turns. Beneath the ferocity lie deep grief and a loyalty that will follow Darrow into any danger.

A towering Obsidian warrior freed by Darrow from a life of servitude and superstition imposed on his people by the Golds. Immensely strong and bound by a fierce personal code, he has sworn himself to Darrow and to the cause of liberation. His loyalty and his prowess in battle make him a pillar of the Rising.

A bold, blunt Gold warrior of an infamous family who has thrown in her lot with Darrow's cause. Fierce, loyal, and unfiltered, she fights with reckless courage and speaks her mind without apology. She has paid dearly for her allegiance and remains one of Darrow's staunchest companions.

The former friend turned enemy who has never forgiven Darrow for killing his brother. A renowned and honorable swordsman of the once-great Bellona family, he serves the powers that rule the Society and remains one of Darrow's most dangerous personal adversaries, even as his own loyalties are tested by the cruelties around him.

The cold, brilliant, and merciless son of the late ArchGovernor of Mars and brother of Virginia. Having seized power through patricide and treachery, he is a patient torturer and schemer who trusts no one and stops at nothing. He stands as one of the chief villains arrayed against the Rising.

The Sovereign, absolute ruler of the entire Society, governing from Luna with cold cunning. She has spent a long reign balancing the great Gold houses against one another and crushing dissent. She is the ultimate power the Rising must overthrow, and she will spend any life to preserve her order.

The gentle poet who was once among Darrow's dearest friends and who turned against him upon discovering his deceptions. Now a capable commander serving the ruling powers, he carries the wound of betrayal and stands on the opposite side of the war, his old affection soured into resolve.

A veteran Red leader of the Sons of Ares who first recruited Darrow. Steady and shrewd, he speaks for the lowColors within the rebellion and presses their interests, sometimes wary of Darrow's methods and of leaving too much power in Gold hands. He is a voice for the ordinary people the Rising claims to serve.
