Captured and broken by long imprisonment at the hands of the Jackal, Darrow is rescued by Sevro and his allies and sets out to turn a scattered rebellion into a force that can topple the Society. He rebuilds his coalition of Reds, Obsidians, lowColors, and sympathetic Golds, gambling on daring raids and hard-won alliances while grieving the friends the war has cost him. Betrayal, sacrifice, and vast battles carry the Rising from near-collapse to a final assault on the seat of Gold power. In the end the Sovereign, Octavia au Lune, is overthrown, and the treacherous Jackal is captured and executed by his own sister, Virginia. The old order gives way to a new one: Virginia takes the lead of a reformed government founded on the promise of freedom and representation, with Darrow at her side. Their victory is bought with terrible loss, and hard questions about the future remain, but the color-coded tyranny is broken and the dream Eo died for has taken root.

Previously: Darrow, a Red of the mines beneath Mars, learned that his people were slaves kept in ignorance by the ruling Golds after his wife Eo was executed for defiance. The rebel Sons of Ares saved his life and surgically remade him into a Gold, then sent him to infiltrate the Institute, a brutal academy, where he rose to lead his House and gathered loyal allies, including Sevro and the brilliant Mustang, later revealed as Virginia au Augustus, daughter of the ArchGovernor of Mars. He won the contest but earned the hatred of Cassius au Bellona and exposed a monstrous rival as Virginia's brother, Adrius, the Jackal. Taken into the ArchGovernor's service, Darrow spent the next years climbing through the Society's deadly politics as a hidden agent of the rebellion, forging new alliances and freeing an Obsidian warrior, Ragnar, to his cause. His schemes built to a bold bid for power, but it was betrayed: his friend Roque turned on him, the Jackal murdered his own father to seize control, the rebel leader Ares was unmasked as Darrow's mentor Fitchner and killed, and Darrow himself was captured, leaving the Rising in disarray as this book opens.

The Rising triumphs. After brutal campaigns and heavy sacrifice, Darrow and his allies bring down the Sovereign, Octavia au Lune, ending her long reign over the Society. The war costs Darrow dearly, taking loyal companions along the way, and his estranged friend Roque, who had sided against him, meets his end after the final battle. The treacherous Jackal, Adrius au Augustus, is defeated and captured, and his sister Virginia executes him herself, closing the wound their family opened. With the old order shattered, Virginia au Augustus assumes leadership of a new government, a Solar Republic meant to give every Color a voice and to end the caste tyranny the Golds imposed. Darrow, no longer hidden, stands beside her as they begin the fragile work of building the freer world Eo had dreamed of, and they look toward a future for their young son. Cassius au Bellona, his loyalties changed by all he has seen, departs to safeguard a child of the fallen ruling line. The revolution has won, but the peace that follows will have to be fought for anew.
