Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Elaine (Protagonist)

Also known as Dawn, Sentinel Dawn

Appears from the start

A powerful healer and Sentinel stranded with her companions after passing through the Fae realm. Elaine can fly, fight with Radiance, and sustain protective healing on people who touch her. She takes charge of medical care while the group shelters from the forest's dangerous creatures.

Auri (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Elaine's young bonded companion, a small fire-user traveling with the stranded group. Auri's flames are valuable outside but dangerous in their sealed shelter, where air is limited. Elaine renews the persistent healing that protects her after the Fae crossing erased earlier castings.

Artemis (Supporting)

Appears from the start

An earth-and-lightning combat mage traveling with Elaine. Artemis spends much of her mana rapidly building a stone refuge against the spider-filled forest, then shares responsibility for the group's defense and escape planning.

Julius (Supporting)

Also known as Commander Julius

Appears from the start

An experienced commander and exceptionally fast fighter traveling with Elaine and Artemis. Julius helps organize watches, weighs the group's immediate survival needs, and keeps the stranded party together while they assess the hostile forest.

Amber (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Elaine's apprentice and a noncombatant member of the party. Amber depends on the others for protection when they emerge among high-level predators, but remains part of the group's effort to understand their situation and reach safety.

Iona (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

A severely injured high-level warrior traveling with a young frost wyvern. Elaine finds her in a Roland tavern, restores her missing limbs, and stabilizes her condition. On waking, Iona becomes the first local person able to address Elaine in English.

Fenrir (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

Iona's young frost wyvern companion. Iona cares for him during her injured journey out of Modu, and their new Companion Bond gives her shared awareness while riding him. His enhanced bite and growing savagery make the bond both useful and demanding.

Mormerilhawn (Supporting)

Also known as the Black Rose

First appears in chapter 13

The arena master overseeing the school's combat-scholarship free-for-all. Mormerilhawn supplies the protective skill and teleportation system that remove defeated applicants, sets limits against grave harm, and adjusts Elaine's defeat threshold after seeing her regeneration.

Marcus (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 17

Elaine's newly assigned adviser at the School of Sorcery and Spellcraft.

Librarian (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 23

Elaine's counterpart within her soul-world library, where possible classes appear as books. Librarian helps her evaluate overlapping abilities, long-term upgrades, and the risks of committing one of her limited class slots too early.

Grandmother Lynette (Supporting)

Also known as Lynette

First appears in chapter 32

A mind healer whom Elaine visits after recognizing the effects of grief, anxiety, and overwork. Grandmother Lynette listens as Elaine describes repeated losses and her fear that helping people only brings further death.

Skye (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 26

Elaine's dormmate, who joins Auri in a prank about extreme aging.

Vruna (Minor)

First appears in chapter 33

Skye's unicorn bond-partner and a fellow member of Elaine's unusual dormitory household. The bond between Vruna and the former princess is the reason Skye became immortal.

Ratcatcher (Minor)

First appears in chapter 33

A goblin archivist who assists Elaine with an old biomancy document. Ratcatcher identifies its language as Alethi and explains that copied signatures and transmission history may establish provenance when contact with the Fae makes ordinary age-testing unreliable.

Ogre classmate (Minor)

First appears in chapter 38

An ogre studying Comparative Monster Anatomy alongside Elaine. He approaches her during the opening of a new term and makes her uneasy, although she cannot yet identify a concrete offense or explain the source of her concern.

Night (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 56

A figure from Elaine's distant past whom she remains determined to find. Elaine tells Marcus that Night is still alive, even though Marcus doubts that any vampire could have survived since creation. Night's location and present circumstances are unknown.

Knight (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 12

A person known to Elaine from her earlier life. She asks a vampire translator about Knight, but he does not recognize the name.

Emperor Knight (Supporting)

Also known as Knight

First appears in chapter 58

The historical founder of a vampire empire. After researching the empire, Elaine identifies Emperor Knight as the person she knew as Knight and plans to investigate the connection.

White-robed witch (Minor)

First appears in chapter 59

A school-connected observer who reviews graduation reports. She notices Elaine of Remus in the records, but her purpose and any action she may take remain unknown.

Imperial clerk (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 59

An official who accepts an old and false report accusing Elaine of impersonating a Sentinel. Acting on that misinformation, the clerk orders a roving Ranger team to capture Elaine alive and return her for a public trial and execution.
