Practical, blunt, and skilled in medicine, she is used to hardship and unafraid to speak her mind. Her nursing knowledge and level head become vital when she is suddenly cut off from everything familiar.

A captain of English dragoons in the Scottish Highlands of 1743, and, unsettlingly, a near-perfect likeness of Claire's own husband, whose distant ancestor he is. Cold, cruel, and dangerous, he wields the authority of the occupying English army with sadistic pleasure. From their first meeting he is a menacing figure, and he becomes a persistent threat to Claire and those she comes to care for.

A dour, weathered Highlander of few words who rides with the clansmen who take Claire in. Gruff on the surface but steadfast and shrewd, he is a loyal kinsman and protector to the younger warrior in the party, and he keeps a watchful, skeptical eye on the strange Englishwoman thrust among them.

The war chief of Clan MacKenzie and brother to its laird, a forceful, charismatic, and ambitious man who leads the party that first takes Claire. Bold and politically cunning, he manages the clan's fighting men and its money, and he is deeply invested in Scottish causes. He treats Claire with suspicion, unsure whether she is a spy.

The laird of Clan MacKenzie, who rules from Castle Leoch despite a crippling illness that has twisted his legs and pains him constantly.
