Ozma of Oz

By L. Frank Baum

Dorothy Gale is at sea with Uncle Henry, bound for Australia, when a storm tears loose the chicken coop she is clinging to and sweeps her away from the ship. She drifts ashore on an unknown fairy coast with Billina, a yellow hen who finds she can suddenly talk, and the pair are soon cornered by the Wheelers, a menacing people with wheels in place of hands and feet. Shut inside a rock they find Tiktok, a copper clockwork man who can think, speak and move only while he is wound, and from him they learn about the land of Ev, whose queen and ten children were handed over by their own king to the Nome King and are held in his underground palace. Ozma, the young ruler of Oz, has already set out across the desert to rescue them, bringing a party of old friends that includes the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow. Baum's third Oz book, published in 1907, is the first to bring Dorothy and Ozma together.
