But Billina secretly learns his secret, the Nomes' terror of eggs saves the day, and the transformed family and friends are all restored. Dorothy wins the Nome King's Magic Belt, everyone celebrates in Oz, and she is sent safely home.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Earlier in the series: A Kansas girl named Dorothy was carried by a cyclone to the magical land of Oz, where, with a Scarecrow, a Tin Woodman, and a Cowardly Lion, she sought the great Wizard's help, destroyed the Wicked Witch of the West, exposed the Wizard as a humbug, and finally returned home, leaving the Scarecrow to rule the Emerald City. After the Wizard's departure, a boy named Tip fled the witch Mombi with living companions and, with the help of Glinda the Good, was revealed to be the Emerald City's rightful ruler, a princess who had been magically hidden in a boy's form. Restored to herself as Princess Ozma, she took the throne of Oz. This book follows Dorothy on a new voyage and the young Queen Ozma on a rescue mission to a neighboring fairyland.
Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)
Sailing across the ocean with her Uncle Henry, Dorothy is swept overboard during a fierce storm and drifts to shore in the strange fairy country of Ev, accompanied by a yellow hen who, in this land, can talk and whom Dorothy names Billina. Exploring the shore, the two encounter the alarming Wheelers, creatures with wheels instead of hands and feet, and take refuge until they discover a curious copper man standing motionless among the rocks. He is Tik-Tok, a mechanical man who runs by clockwork and must be wound up to think, speak, and move. Once wound, Tik-Tok becomes their protector and guide, and the little party sets out to learn more about the land they have washed up in.
Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)
Dorothy, Billina, and Tik-Tok reach the palace of Ev and meet its ruler in the royal family's absence, the vain Princess Langwidere, who owns a cabinet of thirty interchangeable heads and swaps them at whim. When Langwidere covets Dorothy's head for her collection and threatens to take it, Dorothy is in real danger. Rescue arrives in the form of Ozma, the young ruler of Oz, who has crossed the deadly desert with her army and her friends, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, and the Hungry Tiger, on a mission of mercy. Ozma has come to free the royal family of Ev, who have been enslaved by the powerful Nome King. Joining forces, the companions set out for the Nome King's mountain to attempt the rescue.
Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)
At the Nome King's underground kingdom, the crafty ruler reveals that he has transformed the captive royal family of Ev into ornaments and scattered them, disguised, among the countless treasures of his palace. He offers the rescuers a cruel bargain: each may enter and guess which ornaments are the enchanted prisoners, but anyone who guesses wrong will themselves be turned into an ornament. One by one, several of the would-be rescuers try, fail, and are transformed, and the situation grows dire. Meanwhile the resourceful hen Billina, small and overlooked, hides and secretly overhears the Nome King, gathering the crucial knowledge of how to tell which ornaments are the captives, knowledge that may yet turn the tide.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
Armed with the secret she overheard, Billina exposes which ornaments hold the enchanted captives, and when the Nome King turns treacherous, the Nomes' deadly terror of eggs, which Billina uses against them, shatters his power. All the transformed prisoners, the royal family of Ev and Dorothy's own enchanted friends, are restored to their true shapes, and the Nome King is beaten. Dorothy claims his powerful Magic Belt as a prize. The royal family of Ev is freed and its rightful king set back on the throne, and the whole company travels to the Emerald City for a grand celebration. When the time comes to part, Ozma uses her magic to return Dorothy safely to her Uncle Henry, promising to watch over her and bring her back to Oz whenever she is needed. The adventure ends in triumph and friendship.
How does it end? (ending)
The rescue succeeds through cleverness rather than force. After many of the party fail the Nome King's guessing game and are themselves turned into ornaments, the yellow hen Billina, who has been quietly eavesdropping, learns the secret of which ornaments the captives are and how to identify them. When the Nome King turns treacherous, the Nomes' deadly fear of eggs, which Billina wields against them, breaks his power. All the transformed prisoners, the royal family of Ev and Dorothy's own enchanted friends alike, are restored to their proper forms, and the Nome King is defeated. Dorothy takes possession of his Magic Belt, a powerful magical device. The royal family of Ev is freed and its rightful king restored, and everyone travels to the Emerald City for a joyous celebration. When it is time to go, Ozma uses her magic to send Dorothy safely back to her Uncle Henry, promising that she can watch over Dorothy and bring her to Oz again whenever she is truly needed. The friends part happily, the adventure won.
