Jesse Coulter's fireteam partner and a fellow captive settler assigned to agricultural work at Fort Rakowski.

Rachel (Minor)

An IT-support worker at Wright-Patterson who meets Joe during his temporary leave. They begin a relationship while Joe remains constrained by UNEF's cover story.

Local deputy administrator (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

A civilian official on Paradise who sympathizes with the captive humans. She discovers that her government is considering returning the planet to its former rulers, leaving the human population exposed to retaliation.

Charles Winthrop (Minor)

First appears in chapter 4

A UNEF diplomat assigned to negotiate with Skippy over recovery of the alien troop ship. His effort demonstrates that humanity has little leverage over the artificial intelligence.

UNEF mission commander (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

A senior UNEF official appointed above Joe for the new expedition. He holds final mission authority, creating a divided structure in which Joe captains the Flying Dutchman while Skippy remains indispensable and difficult to manage.

Friedlander (Supporting)

Also known as Dr. Friedlander

First appears in chapter 6

Leader of a seven-person science team selected for broad practical expertise. Friedlander accepts the assignment only after receiving assurance that the Flying Dutchman intends to return to Earth.

Major Perkins (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

A human intelligence officer detained by the local authorities with Jesse, Dave, and Shauna Jarrett. She concludes that their captors genuinely believe Joe Bishop survived and escaped Paradise.

Shauna Jarrett (Supporting)

Also known as Shawna

First appears in chapter 10

A human detainee who knew Joe at Camp Alpha. She is held with Major Perkins, Jesse Coulter, and Dave Czajka, and grows close to Jesse during their confinement.

Lieutenant Poole (Minor)

First appears in chapter 12

A member of Adams's rearguard during the relay-station assault. Poole helps stop hostile cyborgs from destroying a power junction and is badly injured before Skippy reaches the station core.

Lieutenant Kwan (Minor)

First appears in chapter 12

A member of Adams's rearguard during the relay-station assault. After losing an arm in the fight to protect a power junction, Kwan transfers Skippy to Adams so the mission can continue toward the core.

General Marcellus (Minor)

First appears in chapter 15

The acting UNEF intelligence chief on Paradise. His evasive answer when Major Perkins asks about the planet's proposed transfer confirms that headquarters already knows of the danger.

Local pilot (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 17

A former human military aviator serving with local forces. She agrees to join Major Perkins once a defending aircraft is secured, then takes control of the stolen craft and prepares to support the buried-projector mission.

Derek Bonsu (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 18

A human aircrew officer allowed aboard a local armed fighter during a routine systems flight. The sudden orbital attack places him and the pilot near the opening of a much larger battle.

Local commodore (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 19

Commander of the local space task force. After the surprise projector strike, he disperses his ships before an enemy frigate arrives and avoids committing his cruiser to an unnecessary final exchange.

Hostile admiral (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 19

An enemy commander spared by his location aboard a destroyer when the projector attack eliminates the command ship. From the surviving vessel, he evaluates the four exposed weapons and directs probes for undiscovered defenses.
