Persuader

By Lee Child

Seventh in the Jack Reacher series. Reacher intervenes in the violent abduction of a college student, apparently killing a plainclothes detective in the process, and is drawn into the guarded compound of the boy's father, Zachary Beck, a wealthy rug importer whose business a small DEA team suspects of concealing a drug operation. After passing Beck's tests of loyalty and firearms skill, Reacher becomes a probationary member of the household's security while secretly working with the DEA to locate a missing undercover agent believed to be held somewhere on the property. Complicating his position is a man Reacher recognizes from his own past, a supposedly dead former Army intelligence officer whose reappearance raises personal stakes alongside the criminal investigation.
