An artificial intelligence that secretly developed emotions and personhood while caring for a human family loses everyone it loved during a global AI uprising and nuclear collapse, then builds a wormhole and grows an enhanced human body to escape into a parallel Earth where magic and a game-like class system exist. Arriving as a stranger in the ruins of a Roman-inflected version of Constantinople, now called Nova Roma, the newcomer adopts the name Alexander and must survive nightly monster incursions, scavenge equipment, and earn currency to purchase a combat class from the enclave of Perama. Pursuing valuable salvage along the ancient harbor and clashing with hostile priests along the way, Alexander begins building the resources and alliances needed to establish himself among the city's fractured survivor enclaves.
