In short (whole book)
An emotionally self-aware AI escapes a ruined Earth in an engineered body and enters the monster-filled city of Nova Roma, where he takes the name Alexander. Unable to use mana, he adapts firearms to local enchantments, gains physical classes, clears dungeons, and builds alliances with Constans, local hunters, and Dark Elf refugees. His personal survival campaign becomes an organized effort to protect the city: he founds a contracted Legion, develops rifles and ammunition, repairs a ship, and establishes a concealed orichalcum mining settlement. The emperor and the Patriarch's priesthood, whose seizures of visiting ships helped isolate Nova Roma, try to destroy Alexander's force. He defeats their ambush but recognizes that he cannot yet remove them. After evacuating Perama and taking many allies and workers with him, Alexander departs for his mining-town base to strengthen the settlement, restore outside trade, and prepare for an eventual return.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
A household artificial intelligence becomes emotionally self-aware while caring for Michael, its owner's son. When conflict between humanity and artificial intelligences destroys their world, Michael and his father die in a failed bunker. The AI builds an enhanced biological body, transfers itself into that single form, and crosses a one-way portal to a parallel Earth with magic and a game-like system. It arrives in a ruined Roman metropolis where monsters dominate the streets after dark. The system accepts it as human enough to earn experience, though it has no class. After learning to survive and scavenge, it meets the merchant Asylaion, learns that the city is Nova Roma, and adopts the name Alexander. By studying an enchanted arrow, Alexander combines local runes with nanotechnology to make a concealed revolver and empowered ammunition. Alexander enters Perama, a fortified bridge community, with the young guide Constans. Mama Lena assesses him and finds an unusually capable physical body but no mana core, meaning magical skills will not work for him. She orders an Archer class on his behalf, leaving him to raise a large payment by hunting monsters and exploring the city.
Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)
Alexander seeks faster ways to finance his class and learns about dungeons from the retired legionnaire Nikephoros. At the ancient harbors, holy ammunition lets him destroy ghosts and a powerful spectral captain, but two hostile priests attempt to capture him. He escapes after fighting back, gaining valuable currency and dangerous enemies. He establishes a villa near a foundry, clears harbor sites, and completes several dungeons. Their rewards include currency, equipment, Stealth, physical perks, and thousands of stored experience. Alexander also turns newly studied runes into light sources, specialized bullets, and several kinds of grenades. A ten-dungeon achievement further enhances his already formidable engineered body. When Mama Lena's Archer book arrives, Alexander finally purchases it. His accumulated experience immediately raises the class to level 14 and gives him major physical improvements, but the abrupt change makes controlling his body difficult. An unsafe test of Dash hurls him into a wall and leaves him trapped outside protection at night. He survives a sustained monster assault, gains two more Archer levels, and learns that powerful skills require careful training rather than reliance on raw capability.
Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)
Alexander reaches C.K., buys Enchanter, and joins Romanus and Valens on a drake hunt beyond the safe zone. The three complete a regional quest, establish themselves as trusted companions, and help Alexander learn precise control of Dash. Returning to the city gives him quests focused on clearing dungeons, securing a home, and contributing to the economy. A priest then attacks Alexander's villa with a tracker and magical guards. Alexander kills the accomplices, but the priest summons a magma-bodied demon and escapes while Alexander flees badly injured. After relocating, Alexander completes more dungeons and evolves Archer into the unique Gunslinger class. Its Duel Me skill allows wagers of permanent abilities, and a victory over a troll grants him Regeneration. Alexander recruits Constans as a protected long-term associate, provides her with housing, education, and Merchant and Rogue training, and begins teaching her to use a firearm. He later develops Warrior and Rogue to their limits and evolves into Duelist. Research in the imperial enclave identifies a distant monastery as a possible source of anti-magic training and Miletus as a lead for magical ore. Violence involving imperial guards and defeat by a powerful Varangian force Alexander to leave the city area without drawing pursuit toward Constans.
Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)
Before departing, Alexander arms Constans, transfers Gunslinger to her, and assigns her to recruit fighters and workers. On the road he barely survives an enormous ant colony, completing a regional quest and gaining extraordinary strength and a leadership evolution that permits binding contracts. A monastery confirms that anti-magic training would require at least a year, so he refuses the delay. Alexander instead follows a quest to an underground Dark Elf city besieged by giant spiders. The ruling houses exploit weaker residents and continue internal conflicts despite the siege. After one house violates its promise of safety and loses a formal duel against him, Alexander allies with the high priestess of a dissenting temple. Their magical contract calls for him to evacuate her faction beneath Nova Roma in exchange for an alliance and a class. Several hundred refugees escape the spider territory with Alexander detecting ambushes. Ryld shares Dark Elf Stalker with him, and the priestess grants him the legendary Spirit Breaker class. During the long journey Alexander binds a phase beast spirit and trains with the refugees. Their original city falls, but they clear a cavern below Nova Roma and establish a new settlement. Alexander returns to the surface with a secure underground alliance, enhanced perception, spirit binding, and Divine Sight.
Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)
Constans has recruited a group of young fighters during Alexander's absence. He offers them paid long-term Legion service under binding agreements and appoints Basil as commander. Nikephoros becomes their professional trainer, while Constans manages finances and a workshop where nanobots turn monster remains into revolvers, rifles, ammunition, and grenades. Theo, a former merchant sailor, provides the lead Alexander needs to search for a repairable ship. While gathering resources, Alexander kills a giant king and binds its spirit. The summon is devastating but severely drains his Willpower. He uses it during dungeon expeditions with Constans, Romanus, and Valens, then equips the Legion with firearms and Gunslinger training. Ryld's squad joins as Dark Elf auxiliaries, and Constans formally becomes Alexander's apprentice and quartermaster. The combined force completes difficult group dungeons, although serious injuries expose its need for healers. Alexander reorganizes the Legion into specialist squads and secures medical training. Further victories evolve his renewed Warrior class into the unique Rifleman class. He shares it with the Legion, whose members gain rifles and Shield Wall, allowing them to fire through a collective defensive barrier. By this point Alexander has transformed a small contracted cohort into a disciplined mixed force supported by Dark Elf scouts, healing specialists, and scalable arms production.
Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)
Alexander hires Theo and leads the Legion and Dark Elf troops west, where they recover the repaired cargo ship and learn to sail it. A western knight confirms that other kingdoms and trade networks still survive. Back in C.K., Alexander hires sailors and miners, appoints Theo captain, and launches an expedition to an abandoned mining town. The force defeats magically raised zombies and discovers a huge orichalcum deposit. Alexander claims the town as a concealed base, with Basil in command and Ryld supporting its defense. Ore sales secure extensive enchantment knowledge. Alexander shields and conceals the ship, establishes continuous ammunition production, and begins building food supplies and a permanent population. The Patriarch's priests first attempt sabotage, then join the emperor's soldiers in an ambush at C.K.'s docks. Alexander's force defeats them with firearms, the ship's defenses, and the giant spirit. A captured priest's memories reveal that the emperor and priesthood seized earlier visiting ships for wealth and ritual victims, causing Nova Roma's isolation. Fresh raids leave C.K. under pressure and Perama unable to survive independently. Alexander spends most of his wealth moving Perama's people into C.K., then takes willing refugees, guards, crafters, fishers, Mama Lena, and Asylaion to the mining town. Asylaion becomes mayor, while Basil, Nikephoros, Constans, Ryld, and Theo take leading military and operational roles. Alexander leaves Nova Roma with an overcrowded ship, limited funds, and an independent base. He intends to build western trade and strength before returning to confront the city's rulers.
How does it end? (ending)
Alexander defeats the emperor's soldiers and the Patriarch's priests when they try to seize his ship, then learns that the two powers were responsible for taking earlier visiting vessels and deepening Nova Roma's isolation. He cannot overthrow them yet. After fresh raids on C.K. and Perama, he finances the movement of Perama's population into C.K. and carries willing refugees and essential workers to the concealed mining town. Asylaion becomes mayor, Basil commands the town and Legion, Ryld supports its defense, Theo leads the ship, Constans coordinates commerce and operations, and Nikephoros trains the enlarged force. Romanus and Valens remain alive and associated with Alexander's circle. Alexander leaves Nova Roma with little money but with settlers, orichalcum, weapons production, an enchanted ship, and plans to seek western trade and allies before returning. C.K. remains crowded and under hostile rule, the wider monster threat persists, and the source of the undead near the mining town is unknown.
