Portal to Nova Roma: The Rhine, Book 3

By J.R. Mathews

Third in the Portal to Nova Roma series. Still recovering from a battle that left him partly corrupted by dangerous power, Alexander investigates the fortified island state of the Pirate King, discovers it runs on enslaved labor drawn from an ancient prisoner known as the Watcher, and strikes a bargain to free the Watcher in exchange for future aid and a new class. Returning to Venice, Alexander and his allies commit to opening a trade route along the Rhine to fund the city's rebuilding, using a doppelganger ability to work in two places at once as they push a caravan through dwarven Alpine roads toward a ruined frontier city guarding the route north. Establishing a fortified foothold there against hostile monsters, the expedition begins turning the reclaimed settlement into a base for trade and further expansion toward the kingdom of Champenois.
