In short (whole book)

Still recovering from demonic corruption, Alexander investigates Sardinia, frees the dangerous Watcher, and gains the ability to operate multiple specialized bodies. Financial pressure redirects his coalition toward the Rhine, where he builds Lakeside, secures dwarf and outpost alliances, develops steel, cannons, and riverboats, and survives a vast barbarian siege under Constans's command. A separate frontier expedition uncovers Parisian aggression. Alexander creates sapient automatons who name their people the Verum, gains recorded proof that Paris ordered attacks on dozens of outposts, and raises a mage body. His forces kill an elder green dragon, integrate its core into that body, secure recognition of his frontier sovereignty, and capture the Parisian Rhine fortress. Renamed River's End, the city joins his domain but inherits an urgent challenge to kill a sea titan. Paris, the Pirate King, hostile titans, the Watcher, and Alexander's 60 percent corruption remain unresolved.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Alexander became a founder and military leader in Nova Roma's struggle for survival. He commands the Legion and works with Constans, Isabella, Ivy, Nikephoros, Basil, Theo, and Mikhail. Alexander survived demonic corruption but did not escape it. The corruption greatly increases his physical power while threatening his judgment and self-control, making recovery and the restraint supplied by his companions essential. Constans is his merchant lieutenant and naval commander. Isabella is a bonded spirit scout and protector, Ivy is his stealthy flying mount, and Tenebrosis is his living armor. Theo directs fleet development, while Nikephoros and Basil hold senior responsibilities in the Legion. As the new volume begins, Alexander is returning from months of healing in Carthage. Venice is preparing defensive and commercial ships, and the Pirate King's power remains a strategic danger that Alexander cannot safely confront without better intelligence and a stronger fleet.

Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)

Alexander leaves Carthage for Venice but detours to Sardinia with Ivy and Isabella to assess the Pirate King. They find a disciplined island state whose economy depends on permanently obedient captives. The Pirate King appears as an apostle of an abyssal deity, channels a mind-breaking portal, and destroys a celebrated group that attacks him. Alexander adopts corrupted mental and stealth abilities to continue operating, but using them pushes his corruption upward and creates new moral dangers. Beneath a ruined temple, the group finds the Watcher, an ancient winged prisoner whose coerced psychic power creates Sardinia's thralls. The Watcher admits that power once drove him to destroy almost all of his own people and warns that the world's protective barrier is weakening. Alexander nevertheless makes a permanent bargain, frees him, and receives the Doppelganger class. Copies will share one mind and attributes, but every class assigned to a body is permanently locked to it. The Watcher leaves to oppose Alexander's Sardinian enemies, while Alexander withdraws to Venice with a dangerous new ally and a transformative ability.

Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)

Venice cannot afford both reconstruction and the fleet needed against the pirates, so Constans proposes opening trade through the Alps and along the Rhine. Alexander identifies a ruined city at the river's headwaters as a potential fortified hub, then creates his first doppelganger and sends that body to a monastery for mental discipline. Alexander Prime travels with a large merchant caravan, recruits goblins, and learns that abandoned Roman cities and routes survive beneath the mountains. Frontier attacks force the caravan to abandon its immediate journey to Lyon and seek shelter at the ruined river city. Alexander takes the Berserker class and uses it to defeat an ogre assault, but its escalating strength and exhilaration nearly drive him into another uncontrolled slaughter. Meditation by his distant monk body helps him stop. Constans keeps the barricaded caravan organized, yet the group remains short of ammunition and stranded outside damaged city defenses. The Rhine plan has shifted from a commercial expedition into an urgent effort to seize and hold a viable frontier base.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

The caravan enters the ruined city, clears the ogres, and secures a defensible district without fatalities. Dwarven engineers rebuild bridges and walls, while Basil arrives with the rest of the Legion, supplies, craftspeople, and more dragon-descended riders. Master Lorenz establishes an island shipyard and accepts secrecy terms to build enchanted riverboats. Alexander creates a crafting doppelganger for the Lyon journey, permanently moving several useful classes away from his prime body. His monk body reaches formal training at the Order of the Pristine Mind, giving the shared consciousness a stronger path toward stability. The dwarven king visits the growing settlement and negotiates a broad alliance covering firearms, protection, trade, and access to the old underground Roman network. Alexander, Basil, the king, and their combined force then reclaim the main cavern of a shade-infested underground city by restoring its light pillars. Alexander plans the lakeside settlement as a military center and the underground city as a diverse trade and learning hub. The original caravan crisis has become a coordinated program of settlement, defense, and expansion.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

In Lyon, Alexander offers the King of Champenois a Venice-centered trade network protected by his frontier forces. The king suspects Paris of destroying outposts and gives Alexander a recording orb and a place on an expedition so he can obtain neutral proof. Alexander joins under the cover of an ordinary blacksmith. A skilled Lyon blacksmith trains him, then signs a contract to collaborate on scalable steel production and enchanted breech-loading cannons. Their experiments produce imperfect steel and an adaptable bonded pistol, while the cannon design includes safeguards against enemy capture. The blacksmith's creditors refuse repayment because they intend to keep control of her business. Alexander confronts the crime boss, kills him in a duel, defeats his guards, and destroys the hidden debt records. The blacksmith helps defend him and agrees to leave Lyon. Alexander gives her his technical work, shares the Enchanter class, and relocates her to the new Rhine city with funding, staff, and facilities. Her coercive debt is ended, and Alexander's frontier project gains the specialist needed to turn its weapons plans into an industrial program.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

The city now called Lakeside gains civilian administration, steel production, growing cannon work, repaired river locks, and five affiliated outposts. The dwarven king teaches Alexander to use his extreme attributes deliberately. Meanwhile, Alexander's crafting body travels with an expedition led by a harsh trading-company heir. At a secluded pond, a water nymph heals Alexander's spirit, briefly restores Isabella to living form, and grants Alexander agelessness. Alexander reveals his artificial origin, Isabella recounts her past as the Shadow Queen, and they begin a romantic relationship. Isabella receives one corporeal night each year. Alexander later frees a corrupted guardian bear spirit and binds the willing protector to himself. The expedition reaches a ruined frontier outpost marked by an earlier violent attack, wild dungeons, and an accessible but dangerous mithril mine. Alexander quietly repairs buildings and supplies while concealing his abilities. His monk body chooses a path that strengthens calm and coordinated movement, and his expanding mindscape improves resistance to corruption. With the outpost still insecure and its former attackers unknown, Alexander and Isabella enter a wild dungeon beside his workshop.

Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)

Alexander, Isabella, and Kermode clear the poisoned dungeon and gain a useful appraisal skill and magical ring. At the outpost, Alexander stops the expedition leader's public abuse and begins training him through daily responsibility rather than removing him. The young man slowly becomes engaged with residents, though a suspicious visitor tries to exploit his resentment. Alexander obtains mithril from a troll-infested mine for experiments in crafted intelligence. Elsewhere, Lakeside and the restored underground city expand rapidly through dwarf construction, trade, and nine affiliated outposts. Constans returns from profitable negotiations, Master Lorenz accelerates riverboat work, and Theo keeps renewed Adriatic pirates away from Venice. Alexander and his allies acquire new skills and plan specialized artillery forces. He also learns that claimed cities can advance by completing role-specific challenges. The underground city begins a major trade challenge with early progress already secured. Alexander then turns toward the more difficult opportunity at Lakeside, unaware of its precise demands. His coalition now has a functioning regional economy and stronger industry, but Parisian intrigue, pirate pressure, and the unresolved frontier massacre remain active threats.

Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)

Claiming Lakeside triggers an extreme barbarian city challenge. Constans takes command while Alexander and the dwarves rush dozens of cannons into service against an army numbering in the tens of thousands. Artillery, rifles, goblin raids, dragon-descended cavalry, Isabella's darkness, and Ivy's aerial support hold the attackers for days, but frost giants eventually break the wall. Constans fires through Alexander to stop the massed breach, leaving his prime body catastrophically wounded and comatose. His crafting body organizes a large relief column from Venice and, during the march, links mind runes into a mithril orb that awakens as a new person. Alexander accepts the being as his child, encourages independent choice, and builds a mithril-and-orichalcum body for the new Automaton Mage. The relief force reaches Lakeside before the final assault. Ivy evolves into a young shadow dragon, carries Alexander's crafting body into battle, and kills the barbarian general. Nikephoros and the reinforcements destroy the last incursion. Lakeside survives, Constans earns the General class, and Alexander awakens blind and scarred but alive. He receives Bloodmage, while the city gains powerful permanent defenses and resources for continued expansion.

Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)

Alexander develops Bloodmage powers that sense, store, and weaponize blood, while Tenebrosis evolves to feed on nearby deaths and potentially raise corpses. Lakeside converts its victory into stronger walls, cannon units, naval investment, and a quest to send a fleet down the Rhine. Master Lorenz launches the first enchanted riverboats. During their northern journey Alexander releases his hostile corrupted giant spirit against monsters and lets it dissipate, then claims a shielded castle as a future base. At the frontier outpost, the once-abusive leader has rejected a Parisian demand to surrender. Alexander creates Alice, a second automaton, as hostile troops gather. Elite Parisian attackers kill civilians and breach the outpost, but Alexander's multiple bodies, Isabella, Roland, the first automaton, and local defenders defeat them and kill their mage leader. Alexander binds that mage's spirit through a bargain and records his confession that the King of Paris ordered attacks on thirty-seven outposts. Alice and the first automaton create the pacifist crafter Arden, and the three name their people the Verum. Constans provides material for Alexander to begin a purpose-built mage doppelganger as the coalition prepares to retaliate.

Story so far - through chapter 55 (this book)

Alexander creates a mage doppelganger and compels the captured Parisian mage spirit to train it as an Ascendant Elementalist. Roland binds his outpost to Alexander's coalition and joins the winter campaign against a fortified Parisian city at the Rhine's mouth. On the way, concentrated cannon fire kills an elder green dragon. Its core gives the mage body access to the world's magic, though integration is agonizing, and surviving titans become aware of the death. With Alexander's consent, Isabella enters his mindscape and transforms it into a stronger shared refuge. An eastern French king accepts the evidence against Paris and recognizes Alexander's frontier sovereignty. Alexander's army then seizes the river fortress, kills the governor and remaining elite attackers, exposes a Parisian spy network, and compels the city to surrender. He renames it River's End and retains its guard under a voluntary contract. The new city's challenge requires one thousand local quests, twenty regional quests, and the death of a sea titan before it awakens and devastates the region. Alexander ends with four linked bodies, two claimed cities, the emerging Verum, and a growing coalition, but Paris, pirates, hostile titans, the Watcher, and 60 percent demonic corruption remain unresolved.

How does it end? (ending)

Alexander closes the book in control of Lakeside and the newly conquered River's End. Lakeside has survived its barbarian city challenge and now supports riverboats, cannon forces, trade, and stronger permanent defenses. Constans and Mikhail are partners, while Isabella remains Alexander's romantic partner and chief support within his reconstructed mindscape. Ivy has matured into a young shadow dragon. The first automaton, Alice, and Arden have founded the Verum as an independent artificial people. Roland's outpost has joined Alexander's coalition, and an eastern French king has recognized his frontier sovereignty. Parisian troops and spies remain a threat despite the capture of their Rhine fortress. River's End must complete extensive quests and kill a sea titan before it awakens. The Pirate King and Sardinian thrall state remain intact, the Watcher remains an uncertain contracted power, and surviving titans now resent the death of the elder green dragon. Alexander's mage body is still integrating that dragon's core, while his recorded corruption remains at 60 percent and could still overwhelm his control.
