In short (whole book)
After Crenshinibon's apparent destruction, Jarlaxle and Artemis Entreri travel through the Bloodstone Lands and join a mixed expedition into Vaasa, where remnants of the dead Witch-King Zhengyi still shape the country. Commander Ellery's party includes Calihye, Athrogate, Canthan and the scout Mariabronne; half-orcs Arrayan and Olgerkhan are drawn in when Arrayan becomes magically bound to a growing ruin. The group faces undead guardians, constructs, shadow creatures and internal distrust while trying to sever the structure's hold on her. Mariabronne dies, and Ellery and Canthan are exposed as conspirators pursuing their own prize. Entreri and Jarlaxle defeat them, Athrogate changes sides, and Arrayan is freed. Entreri's guarded attraction to Calihye develops into a fragile relationship. When his vampiric dagger drains a being of shadow, he is rejuvenated but left physically changed and connected to shadow magic. The survivors escape with powerful relics and unresolved obligations, giving Jarlaxle new schemes and forcing Entreri to confront changes that cannot be reduced to his old contest with Drizzt.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Jarlaxle and Artemis Entreri took control of a Calimport thieves' guild after years in which Entreri defined himself through his rivalry with Drizzt Do'Urden. Jarlaxle then tried to wield Crenshinibon, the Crystal Shard that had once raised an army against Icewind Dale and later came into his possession after Drizzt's companions tried to destroy it. The sentient relic instead pushed Jarlaxle toward reckless conquest. Entreri joined dissident officers of Bregan D'aerthe to free him, rejected the shard's attempt to exploit his own rivalry and ultimately reunited with Jarlaxle. They maneuvered Crenshinibon into the lair of the red dragon Hephaestus, where dragonfire apparently destroyed it. With their Calimport operation damaged and the shard believed gone, the two partners turned east in search of a new field for their talents.
Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)
Jarlaxle and Entreri travel through Damara and toward Vaasa, a land still scarred by the reign of the dead Witch-King Zhengyi. Jarlaxle pursues rumors of lost magic and cultivates wealthy local patrons, including two sisters whose knowledge and authority exceed their human appearances. Entreri accepts the work but distrusts every explanation offered for it. They encounter Commander Ellery's expedition, a deliberately varied company that includes the fighter Calihye, the dwarf Athrogate, the wizard Canthan and the scout Mariabronne. Ellery claims official purpose and welcomes the pair's strength while remaining wary of their reputation. Entreri is interested in Calihye but treats that interest as another vulnerability to control. Jarlaxle, by contrast, enjoys adding uncertain allies to a mission whose real rewards are still hidden.
Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)
The company learns that a magical structure associated with Zhengyi is taking form in the Vaasan wilderness. Arrayan Faylin, a half-orc spellcaster from Palishchuk, has become linked to it, and the connection is draining her even as it gives the expedition a way to understand the ruin. Olgerkhan refuses to leave her, while the dwarven priest Pratcus supplies healing and recognizes the spiritual danger. Jarlaxle folds the rescue into the treasure hunt without pretending that compassion is his only motive. Mariabronne guides the party through hostile ground to the structure, where shifting passages and magical defenses make ordinary maps unreliable. Entreri studies the other adventurers more closely than the walls. Ellery and Canthan share information selectively, Athrogate appears loyal to his employers rather than the mission, and Calihye's guarded exchanges with Entreri suggest both attraction and suspicion.
Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)
Inside the ruin, the expedition faces undead remnants, constructs and creatures shaped by shadow. The place responds to Arrayan's bond and draws more heavily on her as the group penetrates its defenses. Olgerkhan and Pratcus focus on keeping her alive; Jarlaxle searches for the mechanism linking her to the structure. The dangers also expose weaknesses in Ellery's command. Orders that might make sense for recovery of a relic repeatedly conflict with the safest route for rescuing Arrayan, reinforcing Entreri's suspicion that part of the company has a concealed objective. Mariabronne's knowledge keeps the group moving, but experience cannot protect everyone from guardians designed by the Witch-King. Losses leave the survivors more dependent on people they do not trust. Calihye and Entreri begin relying on one another in combat, an intimacy the assassin finds harder to dismiss than simple physical interest.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
The ruin's attacks intensify as Arrayan weakens. Mariabronne is lost to its defenses, depriving the party of its most reliable guide. Jarlaxle uses his collection of magical devices to keep routes open while Entreri turns his attention to the human threat within the group. Evidence shows that Ellery and Canthan have been steering the expedition toward a private prize and are prepared to sacrifice companions to secure it. Athrogate and Calihye must decide whether employment and old associations outweigh what they have witnessed. At the same time, the magical bond cannot be broken by simply carrying Arrayan away; the power sustaining the structure has to be confronted at its center. Entreri meets a being composed of living shadow and discovers that his vampiric dagger can drain more than ordinary blood, though using it creates a connection whose cost is not immediately clear.
Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)
Ellery and Canthan's concealed purpose becomes open betrayal as the surviving company reaches the core of the ruin. Entreri and Jarlaxle counter the conspirators rather than surrender the recovered power, and Athrogate breaks from his former employers when their plan threatens everyone still trapped inside. Calihye fights beside Entreri. Pratcus and Olgerkhan keep Arrayan alive while Jarlaxle works to sever the magic using her as an anchor. The struggle destroys the alliances with which the expedition began: rank no longer commands obedience, and survival depends on choices each member makes after the deception is exposed. Entreri's dagger absorbs more of the shadow creature's essence. The effect restores physical vitality and augments his ability to use darkness, but it also marks him and leaves him unsure how much of the creature remains attached to him.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
The survivors break the ruin's hold on Arrayan and defeat its final guardians, ending the immediate promise of renewed power left by Zhengyi. Ellery and Canthan do not survive the betrayal they initiated. Mariabronne and other companions have also died, so the victory brings no restoration of the original company. Olgerkhan and Pratcus bring Arrayan away alive. Athrogate emerges as an ally of Jarlaxle and Entreri rather than a servant of the defeated conspirators. Calihye remains with Entreri, but their bond is fragile because he still treats feeling as a weakness another person might exploit. Entreri himself is rejuvenated and changed by the shadow essence taken through his dagger, gaining capabilities that do not resolve the emptiness beneath his discipline. Jarlaxle leaves with new relics, new associates and obligations to the dragon sisters and the Bloodstone authorities. Their adventure in Vaasa is over, but its political, magical and personal consequences follow them onto the road.
How does it end? (ending)
The expedition breaks the magical structure that has been feeding on Arrayan and survives the final guardians left by Zhengyi's power. Mariabronne and other members of the company do not survive the ruin. Entreri and Jarlaxle expose Commander Ellery and Canthan's concealed agenda, and the alliance turns violent; the conspirators are defeated. Athrogate abandons their cause and becomes an independent ally of the two leads, while Pratcus and Olgerkhan help bring Arrayan home alive. Calihye also survives and continues her uneasy relationship with Entreri, having seen evidence that his coldness is partly defense rather than absence of feeling. During the struggle Entreri uses his vampiric dagger against a creature of living shadow and absorbs some of its substance. He emerges physically restored and unnaturally altered, with new ties to shadow that he neither sought nor fully understands. The recovered magic and the deaths in Vaasa leave Jarlaxle and Entreri answerable to several interested powers, including the dragon sisters and the rulers of the Bloodstone Lands. They leave the ruin victorious but not free of its consequences.
