In short (whole book)

Dash turns the Cygnus Realm from a raiding force into an expanding power able to seize worlds, field ground troops, and build mobile bases. The campaign captures a Far-Flung planet, rescues Jameson, survives a Golden cyberattack and a costly assault on the forge, and converts enemy ships into resources for a larger fleet. A distant expedition finds Armagost and three other survivors of a human civilization nearly erased by the Golden. Armed with new allies and a suspect enemy battle plan, Dash commits every major asset against the first Golden defensive line. The realm wins a severe battle and prevents an orbital weapon from killing roughly three billion captives. The Golden retreat to their next line while Cygnus repairs, expands, and begins building the carrier Victory for the continuing war.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Dash, known as the Messenger, leads the Cygnus Realm in its war against the Golden. He pilots the archetype with Sentinel, while Leira, Amy, and Conover operate other mechs. Viktor, Benzel, Ragsdale, Haralyn, Wei Ping, and Custodian support the realm's fleet, security, administration, and industry. The forge is the center of Cygnus power and the foundation for its continuing expansion. The coalition also relies on allied ships and settlements as it gathers resources and confronts Golden forces across a widening frontier. Enemy Harbingers remain a major battlefield threat, and the larger war is unsettled. Dash begins this campaign with an established command structure, advanced creator technology, and the responsibility to turn scattered military successes into territory and strength the realm can hold.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Dash recovers an ancient Golden drone and intact Dreadfoot combat bots, then directs the Cygnus Realm toward taking and holding planets rather than relying on ship captures. Intelligence about a Far-Flung military buildup leads to an assault on their home system. Cygnus exploits a maintenance network, defeats the orbital defenses, preserves a mysterious transfer station, and deploys Barnett's new Brigade to seize the main spaceport. The ground battle proves far more dangerous than mech combat, but allied reinforcements prevent the eastern flank from collapsing. Dash's forces discover a concealed Golden bunker, stop a black craft from escaping, and capture its pilot alive. Calling himself Emissary Prime, the prisoner presents the Golden as a superior people entitled to spend allied species in their war. He then uses a destructive signal to kill himself and launch a virus through Petrovsky's active datapad. The intrusion kills three noncombatants and turns forge machinery against the crew before Dash, Leira, Sentinel, and Custodian regain control. The forge is restored from protected backups, but the attack demonstrates that ordinary infrastructure can become a Golden weapon.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

A Far-Flung prison yields one survivor, Jameson, whose people have been enslaved and consumed. She offers an alliance if Cygnus liberates captives at Sanctuary, and Dash backs her training for a new scout mech after learning that she can use the Meld. Creator records concerning her people remain unusually restricted. Meanwhile, Dash captures a Golden platform near a magnetar, suffering an injury while securing enough dark metal for major construction and mech upgrades. A second internal threat emerges when Petrovsky, apparently controlled by the earlier virus, launches a probe containing Cygnus intelligence. Dash and Ragsdale replace its contents with disinformation, and Custodian traps a renewed infection attempt in a false network. Conover and Viktor help restrain Petrovsky so a cure can be sought. Before that crisis can be resolved, a large Golden force attacks the forge with upgraded Harbingers and manned stealth fighters. Benzel holds the fleet line, Viktor organizes civilian and allied vessels into an improvised defense, and the mechs destroy most of the attackers. Cygnus survives, but loses personnel, small ships, and infrastructure. The retreating enemy leaves the realm with evidence of a sharper threat and an urgent need for greater reach and resources.

Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)

Dash accepts dark-metal neural implants that deepen his control of the archetype, even as he worries about losing part of his humanity. The enhanced interface proves effective, and Cygnus adopts Conover's plan to lure Golden forces into ambushes and recover their ships for dark metal. Viktor risks himself twice as bait. Both operations succeed, although the Slipwing is badly damaged and Leira's Swift develops a blur-drive fault. The second ambush also uncovers an abandoned vessel whose archive describes the Displaced, a civilization nearly destroyed by the Golden and once capable of rapidly cutting through their cruisers with immense beam weapons. Dash leads Leira, Conover, Viktor, Mira, and a boarding squad into the Desert to search for survivors and knowledge. They cross worlds sterilized or broken by the Golden, then follow a deliberate signal into the Coal Sack Nebula. There they find a powerless hidden station containing six humans in crystalline tubes. Two are dead, but four remain alive. The expedition transfers the survivors and recoverable equipment to the Slipwing. Golden ships converge before the group can leave, forcing Dash to use the archetype's Blast Cannon against the vessel blocking their escape. The expedition reaches a safe translation point with the four survivors still unconscious and their identity not yet confirmed.

Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)

The rescued humans identify themselves as remnants of the Displaced. Their leader, Armagost, provides a DNA key that opens their recovered archive, though deep sleep has erased much of the survivors' technical memory. Their history connects old human culture and the Red Barons probes to a civilization devastated by the Golden. Haralyn, Wei Ping, Eve, Jameson, and the survivors move to the newly deployed Anchor Alpha. Soon afterward, a wreck yields a Golden defensive map and battle plan that Ragsdale suspects may be bait. Dash nevertheless concentrates the forge, both Anchors, the Relentless, five mechs, and the Brigade against the apparent weak center of the first defensive line. He rejects a Golden ultimatum threatening billions and attacks on his own timetable. A much larger fleet awaits. Jameson saves Dash during the battle, while the realm suffers serious damage and commits a comet missile before its mobile stations bring decisive firepower into range. Dash, Leira, and Viktor also stop an unfamiliar Golden ship approaching a populated world. The device recovered from its commander controls an orbital cascade-warhead weapon aimed at roughly three billion captives. Cygnus has arrived before it can be used. The Golden retreat to another fortified line, while the realm repairs in captured territory, begins processing the surviving captives, and builds a larger carrier that Dash and Leira name Victory.

How does it end? (ending)

The Cygnus Realm breaks the first Golden defensive line after committing the forge, both Anchors, the Relentless, its mechs, and a strategic comet missile. Dash, Leira, and Viktor intercept a Golden vessel approaching an inhabited planet, and a device taken from its commander proves to be the trigger for an orbital planet killer. Roughly three billion captives survive because the weapon is stopped before use. The Golden withdraw to fortify another line rather than surrender. Cygnus remains in the captured region to repair, process the liberated population, and turn enemy wreckage into new strength, including a carrier named Victory. Dash and Leira prepare for the next campaign. Sentinel is damaged and operating with reduced capacity, Petrovsky's infection remains unresolved, and Jameson's rage still concerns her allies. The promised liberation of Sanctuary and Jameson's wider people remains unfinished. Armagost's displaced human remnant and the liberated populations also await fuller integration into the expanding realm.
