Chance (Protagonist)

A karma cultivator fleeing Gleam beside Bella. Chance is bound to the sentient Old City, carries Urumi, and is trying to remain beyond the Shikari's reach.

Bella (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Chance's travelling partner and a preservation cultivator. Bella can defend and heal, and she is escaping the Shikari alongside him.

The Old City (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A sentient city-being bound to Chance and concealed within Urumi. It can gather stone into a crude body and fears that Yamish intends to consume its essence.

Vex (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

Bella's former master and the chief threat pursuing her and Chance from Gleam.

Appears from the start

A powerful mentor who turns Chance and Bella's flight into a four-month trial. He warns them that avoiding capture will include surviving Vex's pursuit.

Brent (Minor)

One of the Red Hands bandits mistakenly freed by Chance and Bella. Brent declares that his group owes the pair a debt for their intervention.

Nate (Minor)

A Red Hands member who tells Chance and Bella about recruitment for a sect based in a floating city.

An apparently friendly and seasoned applicant at the Dancing Cloud trial. James recognizes Chance's fighting style and cautions him about the danger of sect trials.

Tamara (Minor)

James's humanoid combat construct, revealed when he joins her sanctioned challenge against Chance.

Yeo (Supporting)

A hunted young swordsman travelling with his teacher, Rhys. Yeo resists borrowed shortcuts to power and continues his own training while Shikari pursue them.

Rhys (Minor)

Scarred and unable to see, Rhys teaches Yeo under a contract between them. He is hostile toward their Shikari pursuers and intends to intensify Yeo's training.

Lynn (Supporting)

A physically formidable cultivator questioned by Shay about Chance and Bella. Lynn withstands the Shikari's pressure and falsely denies knowing the fugitives.

Shay (Antagonist)

A baron-ranked Shikari investigator seeking Chance and Bella. Shay questions Lynn about the fugitives and treats their alleged killing of a knight-ranked cultivator as grounds for pursuit.

Shea (Antagonist)

The Shikari officer called Shay in the earlier investigation. By this point, Shea has traced Chance to the Dancing Cloud city and joined Jade in confronting the fugitives.

Jade (Antagonist)

An independent knight-ranked Shikari who accepts the hunt for Chance's group over her captain's objections. She wields a broadsword and cultivates a purifying form of sun essence.

Crocodilian monster (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 19

An intelligent monster whose cultivation requires it to consume flesh. Unable to find another path, it accepts Chance's offer of an honorable fight.

Lin (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 23

A powerful condemned cultivator whom Chance knows from an earlier encounter. Lin enters Chance and Bella's room claiming an old debt, then reveals that a higher-ranked Shikari has placed him beyond pardon.

Nadia (Minor)

First appears in chapter 25

A crossbow-wielding member of the Singing Fox sect and Nate's sister. Nadia joins her brother and another cultivator in an ambush against Chance and Bella.

Faceless tower creature (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 28

A black, long-limbed creature without a face that haunts a ruined floating island and drives Chance and Bella toward its cracked tower.

Quinn (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 37

An earth cultivator ordered by her own sister to fight Chance while Bella draws power from a crystal. Quinn creates stone weapons and defenses under the other woman's command.

Quinn's controlling sister (Antagonist)

Quinn's sister, a cultivator who commands Quinn during the struggle over a powerful crystal and attacks with a vine weapon.

A groundskeeper within the Bracken Sect and a friend Quinn trusts to confirm how the sect treats its servants.

Lucy (Supporting)

Chance's former combat teacher and a fellow karma cultivator. Lucy meets Chance and Bella at Fallen, then guides them to the cultivator she serves.

Karma cultivator (Supporting)

A youthful-looking cultivator able to follow threads of fate. He has observed Chance and Bella and warns that Vex will soon find and kill them unless events change.
