In short (whole book)

Chance and Bella flee Gleam under a four-month trial imposed by Yamish, briefly join the Dancing Cloud sect, and use the Azure Moon Realm to escape Shikari hunters. Chance reaches Night rank, Bella reaches knight rank, and they join Jade and Quinn in exposing the Bracken Sect's enslavement of its residents. The Old City lures an earth dragon that destroys Bracken's leaders but causes severe civilian losses. After Bella repairs her damaged path in Fallen, she and Chance stop running from Vex. His attack on a karmic scroll permits its giver to intervene, allowing Bella to kill Vex, while Lin kills Shay. The couple returns to Gleam with the immediate assignment lifted, though Yamish's control, the Old City's bond, Bella's promised favor, Lin's motives, and an unidentified bell remain unresolved.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Chance is a karma cultivator from Gleam who travels with Bella, a preservation cultivator able to defend and heal. The sentient Old City is bound to Chance and concealed through Urumi, while Vex, Bella's former master, remains their principal pursuer. Chance and Bella begin this volume as fugitives trying to stay beyond the Shikari's reach.

Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)

Yamish gives Chance and Bella four months to evade the Shikari and warns that Vex is among their hunters. The Old City forms a stone body through Urumi, and Chance refuses its offer of essence because he will not build his path by taking another being's power. After intervening at a roadside camp, the pair discover that the people they freed are Red Hands bandits, who declare a debt to them. They follow the bandits' information to a Dancing Cloud recruitment trial in hopes that its floating city will offer shelter. Applicant James uses his construct Tamara in an attempt to take Chance's cultivation supplies, but Chance defeats them. Chance and Bella pass the trial, gain access to the city, and learn that housing, travel, and supplies depend on contribution points.

Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)

Chance and Bella begin earning contribution points for the Dancing Cloud sect by clearing dangerous creatures from a damaged district. Separate Shikari activity closes around them: Shay questions the powerful cultivator Lynn, who conceals his knowledge of the pair, while Yeo and Rhys remain under attack. Chance and Bella establish temporary housing and discuss their families. Bella reveals that Vex approached her after her parents were attacked, offered strength to the frightened child, and later trained and controlled her. She believes he killed her parents. Chance rejects her self-blame and commits to facing Vex with her. Meanwhile, Jade, a knight-ranked Shikari, accepts the open hunt for Chance's group despite her captain's warning that the fugitives have already defeated powerful pursuers. Yamish senses her connection to Chance and treats the new pursuit as part of his apprentice's trial.

Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)

Bella enters a prolonged cultivation state while Chance answers an emergency request alone. He faces an intelligent crocodilian monster that kills to advance and cannot find a peaceful alternative. Jade arrives during the battle, and Chance saves her before killing the creature. Once she recognizes him as her target, his refusal to claim a debt for saving her unsettles her assumptions. Shay traces Chance to the Dancing Cloud city and brings Jade with him. Chance and Bella prepare to flee, but Shay is waiting in their room when Lin enters. Lin reveals that he is a condemned cultivator with an old debt to Chance, gravely wounds Shay, and prevents Jade from escaping. Chance persuades him not to kill the two Shikari. Chance and Bella then use their reserved tokens to enter the Azure Moon Realm, leaving their pursuers behind with Lin.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

The Azure Moon Realm receives Chance and Bella, who head toward its northern mountains. After monster attacks, Nate, Nadia, and another Singing Fox cultivator ambush them. Chance kills Nate, the Old City kills Nadia, and Bella incapacitates their companion. A transport circle carries Chance and Bella to a ruined floating island, where they find an unidentified ring and encounter a faceless creature that inspires supernatural terror. At the summit of a cracked tower, the creature suppresses their essence and begins killing Bella. Chance realizes it contains imprisoned souls whose karma he can still reach. A clearer vision of his golden manifestation carries him to Night rank, giving him the power to free the trapped souls and destroy the creature. He collapses after the breakthrough, while Bella survives the encounter badly shaken.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

The Old City admits that it withheld help against the Essence Eater because the creature could destroy it, damaging Chance's trust in their alliance. The group nevertheless cooperates to clear a trapped armory and takes only a shield, a belt, and the previously found ring. On another island, an unidentified strife cultivator attacks with disposable bodies, but the Old City locates and kills his concealed true form. Chance and Bella later investigate a crystal suited to Bella's essence. Quinn and her controlling sister arrive, and the sister forces Quinn to fight. Chance breaks the immediate control and rejects Yamish's instruction to kill the woman after her defeat. Lynn then arrives with the woman's severed head and offers protection. His identity is clarified as Lin, the cultivator who previously aided Chance. Bella completes her cultivation at the crystal and reaches knight rank, while Quinn receives the remaining essence.

Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)

Chance and Bella meet Jade near an exit portal. She agrees to hear their account and joins them temporarily to test their claim that Vex is behind the pursuit. Quinn returns and asks for help freeing other servants at the Bracken Sect, so the group follows her through the portal. Inside Bracken territory, they contact Quinn's associate, who confirms that the sect's elders bind servants and prevent escape. Chance kills an abusive overseer and is confronted by an elder whose essence controls both people and stone. Bella kills the elder and the group retreats to a refuge. Quinn refuses to abandon the other controlled residents. Chance, Bella, Jade, and their allies therefore expand their goal from extracting Quinn to liberating the entire sect, despite leadership ranks far beyond their own and a city already mobilizing against them.

Story so far - through chapter 55 (this book)

A manifestation within Chance's karmic vision advises him to control only his own choices and trust his allies. Chance devises a plan without disclosing every detail. Quinn and Jade create diversions, Quinn's associate clears civilians from the intended target, and Chance and Bella draw Bracken's senior leaders to the city gate. The Old City sacrifices part of itself and the belt artifact to lure an earth dragon, which erupts beneath the leaders and kills the sect head and two other senior cultivators. The attack also devastates the surrounding district and causes major civilian casualties. The group remains to rescue the wounded and exhausts its healing supplies. With Bracken's bindings broken, Quinn and her associate stay to protect the survivors and rebuild. Jade rejects the bounty's account of Chance and Bella, leaves without arresting them, and goes to investigate Yeo. Chance and Bella resume their journey alone.

Story so far - through chapter 62 (this book)

Chance and Bella acknowledge their romantic feelings and begin a relationship while travelling. Jade reaches Yeo, survives his initial suspicion, and opens a cautious dialogue about why the Shikari are hunting him. Chance and Bella arrive at Fallen, where Lucy brings them to a youthful karma cultivator who predicts that Vex will soon find them. He offers to repair Bella's damaged path for a future favor. Bella accepts the lethal process, confronts her own essence, and chooses a path based on her own desires and her wish to protect those she loves. After she returns, the cultivator gives them a scroll whose reward depends on the opener's karma. Their plan is to make Vex open it. When they learn Vex and Shay are almost upon them, Chance and Bella choose to stop fleeing. Lin arrives to fight Shay, while they prepare to face Vex themselves.

Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)

Vex and Shay arrive, and Lin draws Shay into a separate fight. Vex recognizes the karma-reward scroll and refuses to open it, then overwhelms Chance and Bella. As he prepares to kill Bella, Chance understands that the scroll is also a gift to them and places it before Vex's strike. Vex cuts through it and wounds Chance, creating a karmic bond that permits the scroll's giver to intervene. The karma cultivator subdues Vex, and Bella uses his spear to kill her former master permanently. Lin kills Shay and departs. Yamish declares Chance's four-month ordeal passed, while Chance takes an unidentified bell from Vex's body. The couple reaches Gleam's White Hart House and learns that the assignment has been cancelled. The Old City remains present but damaged. Yamish still claims Chance as his apprentice, and the karma cultivator explains that this familiar Yamish is not the more dangerous true being.

How does it end? (ending)

Vex cuts the karma-reward scroll while trying to kill Bella, unknowingly creating the bond its giver needs to intervene. The karma cultivator overwhelms him, and Bella kills her former master with his spear. Lin kills Shay and leaves before he can be questioned. Yamish declares the ordeal complete and sends the couple back to Gleam, where their assignment has been cancelled. Chance and Bella reach the White Hart House together. Bella's path is repaired, but she owes the karma cultivator a future favor. The damaged Old City remains bound to Chance, who also keeps an unidentified bell taken from Vex. Quinn and her associate are rebuilding after Bracken's liberation, while Jade has stopped hunting the pair and is hearing Yeo's account. Yamish still claims Chance as his apprentice. The familiar version of Yamish is not the true being, which is more dangerous.
