Kazimir and his allies go to France seeking a way to prevent convergence. A supposed Order archive proves to be a trap, but hidden writing in the organization's surviving books leads them to permanent magical moorings concentrating power in Europe. Unable to break a mooring from Earth, they enter the Nether, where Marduk uses Duke to regain a body and pursue his own freedom. The group kills Marduk and restores Duke, but the divine spark sustaining the dog becomes fatal. Macarius takes it and dies holding back their pursuers. The survivors are displaced to German-occupied France in 1941 before returning to their own time with Kevin, an ogre they must conceal. Kazimir rejects controlled time travel and concludes that Merlin's non-forceful method is the best remaining lead. Meanwhile, the Order compromises the safe-house network and abducts Annie.

Previously: Kazimir became a wizard amid a conflict over convergence and the weakening boundary between Earth and the Nether. After an Order ambush left him temporarily blind and badly injured, Duke, Boots, and Azib helped him reach the threatened house. There, the group destroyed the Order's surveillance and jamming van, allowing Mike, Isabel, Gisele, and Macarius to escape. Mike and Isabel remained Kazimir's human field partners, while the time-displaced warriors Gisele and Macarius continued as his allies and protectors. Boots, a feline being from the Nether, and Azib, a jinn bound to an amulet, traveled with them despite unresolved questions about Azib's loyalty. Duke remained Kazimir's close companion and unknowingly carried the silent magical presence called Marduk. The reunited household abandoned its Finger Lakes base, entered Canada under false identities, and left for Nice. Annie offered Kazimir access to the surviving magical texts and directed the next campaign toward Europe, where the Order was still active. Apophis stayed in the Nether, while questions about Sarah, Annie, Kazimir's parents, and the former wizard known as Anakin remained unresolved.

Kazimir travels to France with Mike and Isabel after hearing Mike's account of the ancient separation between Earth and the Nether. Weak ambient magic during the flight nearly destroys Boots, who survives by taking refuge in Azib's amulet. Annie conceals Kazimir's move to Europe and authorizes reconnaissance of a suspected Order archive at Vivier. A recently renewed ward there shows that the Order has access to a wizard. Before attempting entry, Kazimir studies old wards and discovers that he can perceive their structure and temporarily open a path through them, a feat Azib considers impossible. The team then penetrates the farm's conventional security and reaches the warded barn door. The apparent archive is rigged as a trap: the ward is linked to concealed explosives, likely intended to kill a wizard using the expected counterspell. Kazimir holds an opening long enough for him and Mike to retreat, but the barn explodes and the farmhouse burns. The operation yields no archive and reveals that the Order understood the organization's former wizard much earlier than Annie's side had believed.

After Vivier, the team abandons its compromised transport and shelter. Annie explains that Camille, known to Kazimir as Sarah, rescued and raised him while distrusting the organization's ability to protect a young wizard. She also identifies its former wizard as Theo, whose defection to the Order killed members, exposed operations, and forced Annie into leadership. Alicia was later killed during the Order's search for Kazimir. At a protected library, the group meets Signy, a winged Nether being brought to Earth by Theo's accidental portal who now handles the organization's cyber work. Kazimir determines that magic is being drawn toward Europe rather than merely increasing there. His unusual sight reveals concealed writing and then a map embedded in damaged magical books. Azib also explains that Boots is a limited demigod whose people were driven from their homeland, and Kazimir accepts a conditional duty to help them when it does not endanger the convergence mission. An Order strike force appears to penetrate a farmhouse believed to hold Kazimir and Annie, but the target is a prepared decoy. Signy feeds the raiders false surveillance and detonates the building after they enter, while Kazimir's real group retains the hidden map.

Further work on the concealed books reveals symbols that correspond to magical artifacts. Two objects guide the team to immense underground concentrations of power near Bordeaux and in Brittany. Kazimir calls these permanent structures moorings and concludes they may become convergence sites. His attempt to unravel one only strengthens it, leaving an attack from the Nether as the only identified option. Unknown to Kazimir, Marduk can control Duke and pressures Azib to steer the mission toward the other world. Marduk later speaks through Duke and endorses the plan, while Azib admits that Marduk's continued presence may eventually kill the dog. Annie authorizes an expedition and personally guards the Earth-side portal site. Signy chooses to remain on Earth to oppose the convergence. Kazimir and Isabel build a concealed magical reservoir capable of preserving a tiny portal connection for the return journey. Kazimir, Mike, Isabel, Gisele, Macarius, Duke, Boots, and Azib cross into an unfamiliar Nether territory. They immediately learn that local physical rules make their firearms useless, forcing them to rely on manually operated weapons while locating the far side of the mooring.

The expedition reaches a stone circle linked to the mooring, but Kazimir's attempt to sever it only feeds a deeper magical reservoir. Marduk then emerges from Duke as a physical god, killing the dog's body and trapping the party. Kazimir blocks Marduk from drawing additional power, the others overwhelm him, and Azib beheads the former master who had enslaved him in the amulet. Kazimir directs Marduk's remaining divine essence into Duke and revives him. The wounded party then becomes lost while trying to return to its portal. Duke develops a fatal fever because his mortal body cannot contain the God Spark used to restore him. Macarius voluntarily takes the spark, which heals his injuries and grants brief strength but is expected to kill him. He remains behind against goblins and trolls and brings down the cliff route to stop them. The survivors find him lost in the collapse and presume him dead. Duke recovers and guides them back to the portal. Under renewed pursuit, Kazimir reopens the weakened connection and leads Mike, Isabel, Gisele, Duke, Boots, and Azib through it. They emerge on an altered Earth without working satellite signals and do not yet know where or when they have arrived.

The survivors discover that the portal has sent them to German-occupied France on 28 September 1941. Mike prevents deliberate interference with history, although the group must kill an SS patrol to regain the portal. A second crossing leaves them stranded in a Nether blizzard until Kazimir restores the fading connection. They help Kevin, a separated ogre, repel pursuers and bring him through to Earth, returning to the original anchor ten days after their departure. Annie shelters the survivors and learns that Marduk is dead and Macarius sacrificed himself. Kevin must remain hidden until the team can return him safely without spreading knowledge of Earth. Annie and Mike agree that raw power cannot destroy the moorings and pause further high-risk operations while research continues. Kazimir believes he partly understands the time displacement but refuses to attempt to control it or use it to reverse personal losses. He accepts that Merlin's method from 536 is now the essential lead for preventing convergence. Before the organization can rebuild its security, the Order traces an old shell company, watches the new safe-house preparations, and ambushes Annie during a vehicle swap. The book ends with Annie abducted, the network compromised, and Kazimir's surviving team still free but exposed.

Kazimir, Mike, Isabel, Gisele, Duke, Boots, and Azib survive the Nether expedition and return to their original Earth anchor ten days after leaving. Marduk is dead, and Duke lives because Macarius accepted the residual God Spark and sacrificed himself during the escape. Kevin, the ogre who helped the group reach the portal, is hidden with them on Earth until a safe return can be arranged. Azib remains bound to his amulet and only conditionally trusted, while Kazimir's obligation to help Boots's displaced people remains open. The failed attack on the mooring establishes that magical force cannot prevent convergence. Kazimir refuses to use the uncontrolled time displacement to undo personal losses and turns instead toward discovering how Merlin dealt with the crisis in 536. The Order still has a wizard, has traced the organization through an old shell company, and has compromised its safe-house preparations. Annie is captured during a vehicle change, leaving the surviving field team free but exposed and the organization without its leader.
