Jason Burke has retreated into cargo hauling with Lucky after Omega Force collapsed, but the discovery of Kalette aboard his ship draws him into the search for the abducted Avarian heir. He regathers Doc, Twingo, Kage, and eventually Crusher, restores Phoenix, and follows the kidnappers to Vyrt. The crew rescues the heir, who reveals her name as Annada, then uncovers two overlapping plots: Chancellor Vulem coerced Kalette into moving Annada out of the capital, while Crisstof Dalton helped turn the abduction into an attempt to destabilize the Empire. Phoenix returns Annada to Avaris and helps capture Defiant. Kellea is cleared, Vulem is sent for trial, and Crisstof is executed. Kalette dies protecting Annada from a final bomber. Although the instigator behind the conspiracy remains unknown, Jason and his reunited crew decide to resume Omega Force.

Previously: Several problems from Omega Force's earlier operations remain unresolved. The original crew of Phoenix is still missing, and the status of synthetic people remains a broader concern. Twingo remains exposed to danger connected with a cartel. Bondrass and a scientist who escaped a genetics program are still at large.

So far: Jason Burke and Lucky have abandoned their former work for cargo hauling, but Jason is isolated, drinking heavily, and unwilling to lead. Crisstof Dalton and Doc arrive aboard Defiant while investigating the abduction of the Avarian netjere. A search of Jason's ship uncovers Kalette, the heir's escaped First Attendant, who hid aboard after fleeing the kidnappers on Tetara-4. She says the netjere remains captive and refuses to trust Crisstof. A look back at Omega Force's collapse explains Jason's estrangement from his old allies: when Crusher vanished during an operation, Jason defied Crisstof, deceived Kellea, and took Phoenix to Duat. Saditava Mok paid to free the badly injured Crusher, leaving Jason indebted to him, but Crusher wanted no further part in the crew. Crisstof withdrew his support and Kellea ended her relationship with Jason. In the present, Kalette asks for help reaching her people. Lucky challenges Jason to stop hiding in the cargo business, and Jason finally agrees to find the netjere. Jason, Lucky, Doc, and Kalette evade Defiant and leave S'tora in their failing ship, planning to recruit Twingo.

So far: Twingo declares the cargo ship unsafe, while Kage joins after forcing Veran authorities to clear his record. Jason calls in another favor and reveals Phoenix, stored by Saditava Mok at the cost of a future obligation. After Twingo restores the gunship and the crew escapes an attack, they seek intelligence rather than deliver Kalette into a government that may be compromised. On Galvetor, Jason clashes with Crusher, then the two reconcile. Crusher supplies evidence linking the abductors to Vyrt and rejoins Phoenix. Kage traces their ship's repeated visits to that world and discovers that Kalette's implanted beacon can communicate with the netjere's. Defiant has also placed a tracker on Phoenix, so the crew prepares a false destruction trail. At Vyrt, the heir's answering signal proves she is alive. Jason, Lucky, and Crusher land near her position and recruit Jer-An, a local Veran survivor who knows hidden routes through the city. In exchange for supplies and passage offworld, he agrees to guide them toward the offworld group holding her.

So far: Jer-An leads the surface team through a concealed tunnel to the captors' block. Jason, Lucky, and Crusher infiltrate the building, free the netjere, and escape amid fighting across the city. Jer-An is wounded while shielding her, but Phoenix recovers everyone and evades Defiant. Kalette and the rescued heir reconcile. Jer-An then accepts temporary memory alteration and a false account meant to send pursuers toward Eshquarian space, after which Phoenix releases him on Chiphae-3 with plans for his eventual journey home. The heir tells Jason that her name is Annada and that her people are nuans, not Avarians. She and Jason begin a relationship. At Wy, the crew resupplies while Kage quietly monitors Defiant through its navigation beacon. He finds encrypted traffic between Crisstof and Avarian contacts. The messages expose Kalette as an internal asset, but her explanation reveals coercion: Chancellor Vulem threatened her parents and sister until she arranged to move Annada outside the capital. A separate group then seized the women and intended to kill them. Annada forgives Kalette, and the crew concludes that overlapping conspiracies are involved while Defiant turns toward Avarian territory.

Kalette feeds Vulem a false story that draws him to Kekisha. Kage intercepts Vulem's call to Crisstof, proving that the two are cooperating and that Crisstof intends to kill the Phoenix crew. Phoenix sets an ambush, but when Defiant arrives with ConFed destroyers, Jason broadcasts the intercepted exchange and escapes to Avaris. Annada's codes get Phoenix through imperial defenses, and the Sovereign accepts the evidence against Vulem and Crisstof. Jason and the Sovereign lure Defiant away from the planet. Kage uses his covert access to shut down its weapons, engines, shields, and controls, allowing Avarian ships to capture it. Kellea is discovered imprisoned in Defiant's brig and is cleared after Jason intervenes. The captured conspirators sought to weaken the Empire for ConFed advantage, with Crisstof expecting political power, but they cannot identify who originated the scheme. Vulem is sent home for public trial. Kalette then stops an assassin carrying a bomb from reaching Annada and dies in the explosion. Crisstof is tried and executed. Kellea resumes command of Defiant and leaves for ConFed space under escort. Annada remains safely with her father. Jason, Lucky, Doc, Crusher, Twingo, and Kage stay together aboard Phoenix and re-form Omega Force, while the larger conspiracy and Kalette's missing family remain unresolved.

Annada is restored to Avaris, but the plot against her is only partly explained. Jason and the Sovereign draw Defiant away from the planet, Kage disables it through his covert access, and Avarian forces seize the battlecruiser. Kellea is found in its brig and cleared of involvement. Vulem is returned to his own world for a public trial, while Crisstof is tried and executed by the Empire. Kalette dies stopping a bomber from reaching Annada, and the relatives Vulem used to coerce her remain missing. The Sovereign admits that Imperial intelligence knows more but does not identify the original architect. ConFed representatives are released with a warning, and Kellea takes Defiant home under Imperial escort, with her future command uncertain. Jason and Kellea remain apart. Jason, Lucky, Doc, Crusher, Twingo, and Kage choose to stay aboard Phoenix and restore Omega Force. Jason still owes Saditava Mok an unspecified favor, and the wider conspiracy remains open.
