Rezkin wins the tournament, kills five attacking strikers, and leads an armed evacuation through the duke's estate. The duke is executed, surviving captives are rescued, and Frisha's younger cousin dies protecting the young swordwoman. The refugees escape by sea, where Rezkin reveals that he is both Dark Tidings and the true king. Caydean moves against their families and sends the royal navy after them as they seek foreign refuge.

Previously: Rezkin emerged from a hidden upbringing with extraordinary martial and practical training, two royal blades, and authority connected to the late King Bordran. He formed close ties with Frisha, her sworn escort Tamarin Blackwater, the warrior Reaylin de Voss, and Captain Jimson. Rezkin sought General Marcum's approval to marry Frisha, but Marcum rejected the proposal despite respecting Rezkin professionally. Rezkin also operated a covert network as the Raven, while keeping his identities and purposes divided among those around him. King Caydean ruled Ashai after Bordran's death, Prince Thresson was missing, and serious questions remained about the royal succession. Rezkin's former trainer Striker Farson was still at large and represented the best available lead to the hidden fortress, its final orders, and the reason Rezkin had been prepared there. As the new journey begins, Rezkin is committed to protecting his friends, understanding the authority he carries, and taking the group to the king's tournament.

Rezkin takes command of the tournament voyage by assuming the manner of a powerful high noble. He uses the travelers' deference to defend Frisha and Tamarin from class-based insults and to encourage Frisha's relatives and Tieran Nirius to treat them with respect. When a falling beam injures Rezkin, Reaylin's natural healing power awakens. She resists the discovery, but later heals a donkey and a gravely injured prisoner under the instruction of Wesson, a reluctant destructive mage whom Rezkin hires as her teacher. The prisoner, Kai, has admitted killing the mayor's son, but Rezkin stops a corrupt and hurried trial so the charge can be investigated. Kai recognizes signs that Rezkin possesses royal sword-bearer authority and demands proof. Under a mage oath, Wesson authenticates King Bordran's certificate and two Shailen blades, confirms that they are keyed to Rezkin, and finds that Bordran freed them from the reigning king's bond. Kai swears fealty to Rezkin as king. Rezkin accepts responsibility for protecting him but rejects the title and orders secrecy. Kai then accuses Caydean of killing Bordran and abusing Prince Thresson, though neither claim has been independently established.
