Rescue Party recap

An interstellar survey ship reaches the Solar System shortly before the sun is due to explode. Galactic civilization learned of humanity only recently and assumes that a species so new to radio cannot escape its planet, so a mixed rescue party descends to Earth hoping to save at least a remnant. The cities are empty. With little time before the stellar explosion, the explorers trace an active signal to an underground installation and discover that it is an automatic beacon rather than a gathering place for survivors. The signal points outward. Returning to space and following it, the expedition finds a huge human migration fleet already traveling toward another star. Humanity has independently built enough ships to evacuate Earth and has escaped before its elders arrived. The rescuers establish contact, impressed and unsettled by the extraordinary speed of human progress. Their assumption that they will simply instruct a primitive newcomer is left looking dangerously complacent.

The expedition escapes Earth before the stellar catastrophe and follows the transmission, discovering a vast fleet of human ships heading toward a new star. Humanity has designed and launched its own planetary evacuation within the short period since becoming detectable. The galactic crew makes contact and prepares to help, amazed by a pace of invention that older species have not matched. The rescuers expect to educate the newcomers, while the conclusion suggests that such a rapidly advancing species may soon transform the civilization that believes it is welcoming a pupil.
