Continuing the series, Noah works to repair the flawed runes inside fellow mage Moxie's soul, using a mind-meld potion to enter her inner world while the demon Azel, bound to Noah, slips into the same space and extracts a private bargain from Moxie for himself. His unwanted fiancee Karina soon offers an old family grimoire in exchange for ending their arranged engagement, and the veteran hunter Silvertide arrives to confront Noah over a monster's death, then offers to personally train Noah's students Todd and Isabel for two months once satisfied Noah acted to protect them. With the students away, Noah, Moxie, and their shapeshifting companion Lee travel to the monster-rich city of Dawnforge to hunt for money and rare runes ahead of Noah's deadline to meet Karina again, while unexplained corrupted creatures begin trailing the group.
