In short (whole book)
Noah repairs Moxie's runes, reveals his true identity to her and begins a relationship with her, while their summer work in Dawnforge draws them into Gentil's criminal network. They kill Gentil and free Alexandra, but Wizen remains at large. Evergreen then recalls Moxie under threat of execution. Noah, Moxie, Lee, Azel and rival Torrin factions engineer Evergreen's defeat, after which Moxie's family runes are broken and her oaths finally end. The group discovers that inherited rune designs can hide serious imbalance and develops a method for making genuinely perfect runes. Karina guides them into the Linwick catacombs, where Noah learns that Father Linwick is recorded as dead and gains a hungry, semi-sapient grimoire. The group then identifies a great monster's huge snake body as a sand construct and prepares a rematch. Meanwhile, Jalen traces the catacomb theft to Karina and coerces her into bringing Vermil and the stolen grimoire to him.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Noah Vines died on Earth and eventually entered the dead body of the Arbitage professor Vermil. Publicly living under Vermil's identity, he developed an unusual ability to separate, combine, and improve runes through Sunder. He became closely tied to Moxie, Lee, and his students Todd and Isabel, while concealing his origin from nearly everyone around him. Azel, a powerful demon, remains bound within Noah's soul and cannot be treated as a trustworthy ally. Moxie is constrained by the Torrin family, which supplied some of her runes and controls her position as Emily's teacher. Lee is a demon whose damaged rune set limits her growth. Todd and Isabel have reached rank two, but Todd carries a severe neck injury and Isabel possesses an inherited Master Rune that may draw hostile attention. Noah also remains entangled with the Linwick family through Vermil's body, an arranged engagement to the shapeshifter Karina, and the figure treated as Father. The group begins this volume with hard-won trust, dangerous family obligations, and a shared interest in rebuilding flawed runes.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
Vermil enters Moxie's soul and uses Sunder to dismantle her flawed rank-three runes. Azel intrudes through their bond and privately pressures Moxie into promising three personal answers, but the repair succeeds: Moxie emerges with seven perfect runes at roughly half charge. Lee cannot begin the same process because the group lacks both replacement material and suitable catch paper. Karina, the Linwick shapeshifter previously known as Bria, asks for shelter and offers access to an effectively limitless grimoire in the family catacombs if Vermil can free her from their arranged engagement. Silvertide then questions Vermil about the Hellreaver's death. Accepting his account, Silvertide takes Todd and Isabel for two months of vacation training, offers to investigate Todd's neck injury, and identifies a Heron-family mind-rune user as the likely saboteur who pursued Isabel's Master Rune. Vermil, Moxie, and Lee decide to spend the break adventuring for money, runes, and practical training. An unexplained rune-marked catlike creature begins appearing near Vermil. With one month before Karina's rendezvous, the trio travels to the monster-rich city of Dawnforge and prepares to hunt outside its walls.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
A hidden force pulls Vermil and Moxie into a corrupted underground cavern near Dawnforge. They escape, but the creature below survives, and a similarly corrupted bird attacks Lee. The recurring catlike presence appears connected to these encounters, though the group cannot tell whether it is helping or hunting them. After killing an ice-armored monster, Vermil harvests its runes and rebuilds Natural Disaster around a new perfect Freezing Blizzard component. The altered rune is smoother and appears improved. In Dawnforge, Moxie negotiates the sale of their monster materials through Thaddeus and rents the group a room. Vermil then opens Revin's formation primer and discovers that its basic formations use musical notation. This leads him to disclose a guarded part of his past to Moxie. His real name is Noah Vines. He came from a nonmagical Earth, where violin performance and teaching defined his life, and he spent what felt like millennia in an afterlife before occupying Vermil's body after Vermil had died. Moxie accepts that Noah is neither Vermil nor a disguised demon. Noah decides to obtain a violin and eventually tell Lee the truth as well.
Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)
Moxie secretly commissions Arnold, an injured but highly skilled Dawnforge craftsperson, to make Noah a travel-ready seven-string violin. Her effort and intent create concealed beneficial imbuements, and the instrument bonds permanently to Noah. The gift brings Noah and Moxie closer, and they agree to begin a romantic relationship despite the dangers surrounding them. Lee meets Tillian, a concealed rune user hunting criminals, and the group takes paid monster jobs while continuing to look for runes suitable for Lee. Olive supplies a flying sword and trades Lee a battle axe for modeling work. Unknown to the group, Zale and another assassin begin tracking Lee, while Gentil learns that the attackers were given dangerously incomplete information. Outside Dawnforge, Noah, Moxie, and Lee complete a hunt for oversized claws and test their improved coordination. The horned cat appears again just as Zale and his partner attack. A massive armored burrowing creature erupts from below and crushes both assassins, then turns on Noah's group. The cat vanishes before the charge, preserving the uncertainty over whether it deliberately delivered danger, protection, or both.
Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)
Noah, Moxie, and Lee kill the armored burrowing monster and return to Dawnforge, where Lee tracks the assassins' associates to a bakery concealing a criminal base. Their assault reveals a larger operation. Gentil is acting with permission from the figure treated as Father, while an associate named Wizen has a specific, unexplained interest in Moxie. The group fights through Gentil's defenders, killing the stealth fighter Stigman and several stronger opponents before reaching Gentil's chamber. There, Gentil orders Alexandra, a young swordswoman, to remove the intruders while sparing Moxie. Alexandra's brief resistance shows that she is being compelled. Noah shatters Gentil's high-rank protective bracelet with Sunder and kills him by igniting combustible smoke inside his body. Gentil's death releases Alexandra's body from control. She explains that Wizen installed the imbuement, left her conscious while controlling her actions, and scrambled her memories of him. Moxie spares her and allows her to leave Dawnforge with the group. Gentil's local command is destroyed, but Wizen remains free, his interest in Moxie is still unexplained, and the group carries away an unidentified black dagger found among Gentil's concealed valuables.
Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)
Noah returns in a replacement body after the fatal method he used against Gentil, retaining both his body imbuements and his bond to the violin. Lee designs a future rune set around shadow, shifting, matter, and space, but the price of a suitable space rune is far beyond the group's means. Brayden arrives during a monster hunt and warns that the apparent Father is making unusually active moves. Noah tells him the truth: Vermil died from Father's poison before Noah occupied the body. Brayden keeps the secret, later distinguishing his grief for Vermil from the possibility of becoming Noah's friend, and sends a space rune for Lee. Azel admits that he has been reopening emotions sealed inside Noah and that he feeds only on genuine feelings. Noah still refuses to regard him as an ally. The horned cat demonstrates that it understands writing and repeatedly brings useful encounters, leading Noah to treat it as provisionally helpful. The group prepares to hunt a nearby great monster, while Garina's surveillance continues to obstruct Ferdinand's undisclosed Church of Repose mission. Before the hunt begins, Contessa arrives with Evergreen's recall order for Moxie. Because Evergreen controls Torrin-supplied runes and oaths, Moxie understands the summons as an execution threat. Noah refuses to let her face it alone.
Story so far - through chapter 70 (this book)
The apparent Father refuses to save Moxie unless Noah swears fealty, so Noah, Moxie, and Lee devise their own plan during the journey to the Torrin city. They rebuild Lee's runes with shadow, space, and a demon rune supplied by Azel, then use layered deceptions to turn Evergreen's enemies against her. Lee convinces Rinella that an apparent archdemon will leave Evergreen vulnerable. Noah gives the guard captain Edan a false warning of a coup, mobilizing the city guard, while Azel and Noah confront Evergreen directly. Evergreen overwhelms Azel and kills Noah twice as he struggles to complete a violin formation. Noah finally substitutes the Fragment of Renewal's decay for Sunder in the formation, weakening Evergreen's armor enough for Rinella to strike. Rinella kills Evergreen and tries to frame Noah and Moxie, but Evergreen badly injures her first, and Idan kills Rinella when she resists arrest. After a corruption investigation, Edan releases Noah and Moxie. Torrin leaders end Moxie's sponsorship of Emily and order the family-provided runes inside her destroyed. The punishment leaves Moxie two runes short, but it also breaks the oaths tied to them. She departs the city injured yet finally free of Evergreen and direct Torrin control.
Story so far - through chapter 78 (this book)
Leaving the Torrin city, Noah, Moxie, and Lee discover that runes which appear perfect at rest can become unbalanced when particular aspects are used. The flaw appears in inherited family designs and may help explain why advancement to rank seven is so rare. Noah tests Natural Disaster and concludes that its many competing concepts make it too broad for stable use at rank three. He begins favoring narrower, purpose-built disaster runes instead. The horned cat continues delivering manageable monsters and is formally named Mascot, though its nature remains unknown. Noah's first improvised formation using Natural Disaster fails because the music does not contain all of the rune's aspects, and the resulting wind kills him before Sunder restores him. The group reaches the mountain village where Karina is waiting and learns that she lost a foot while attempting the Linwick catacombs alone. Before entering, Noah and Moxie use a newly purchased mind-meld potion to rebuild her remaining runes around focused, compatible intent. After rejecting several imperfect combinations, Moxie produces three genuinely perfect rank-three runes: Sowed Earth, Sprouting Plant, and Bloodletting Plant. The successful method gives the group a practical foundation for future advancement and for eventually repairing Lee's set.
Story so far - through chapter 86 (this book)
Lee rejects Azel's attempt to convince her that Noah and Moxie's romance will exclude her, reaffirming that the group is her chosen family. Noah then secures the apparent Father's agreement to end his engagement to Karina. Karina accepts the release and guides Noah, Moxie, and Lee into the Linwick catacombs, where Noah kills a powerful Frost White and she safely disables the target tomb's trap. They recover a massive book-like artifact. Noah also finds the Records of the Deceased, a secret bloodline-locked Linwick ledger. It lists Vermil and Father Linwick as dead while listing Brayden as alive, suggesting that the figure currently acting as Father cannot straightforwardly be the recorded patriarch. Moving the ledger triggers the catacombs' collapse defense, so Noah steals it and escapes while maintaining contact. The original tomb book then awakens, consumes Noah's former grimoire, stored runes, and Dayton's scroll, and becomes a semi-sapient grimoire that responds only to him. Noah negotiates a warning before it consumes stored material. Finally, the hungry grimoire devours the Records of the Deceased, stopping its alarm while reproducing its written information. The ledger is gone as a separate artifact, but its contradiction about Father remains preserved.
Story so far - through chapter 94 (this book)
Jalen, a rank-six Linwick magus overseeing the catacombs, restores the collapsed site and discovers both the hungry book and the Records of the Deceased missing. He traces the intrusion toward Karina while refusing the apparent Father's attempt to gain influence over his investigation. Meanwhile, Noah, Moxie, and Lee return to the wilderness near Dawnforge. Moxie's newly perfected runes give her markedly stronger control over plants, and the group continues planning tailored rank-three advancement for Todd, Isabel, and Emily. They find the suspected great monster in the form of an enormous sand-armored snake. Noah's attacks reveal that the snake has no flesh inside its shell: it is an earth-and-sand construct protecting a hidden true body. The construct kills him, but he revives and plans a formation-assisted rematch using the Fragment of Renewal while Moxie restrains it. Elsewhere, Jalen intercepts Karina and learns that Vermil took the grimoire. He restores her missing foot with black magic, then makes the gift part of a coercive bargain. Karina must independently persuade Vermil to meet Jalen and bring the stolen book. Jalen threatens to kill her if Vermil dies or fails to come. The book closes with Noah's group preparing for the great-monster rematch while the Linwick threat advances toward them without their knowledge.
How does it end? (ending)
Noah, Moxie, and Lee remain together after leaving the Linwick catacombs. Moxie is free of Torrin oaths and has rebuilt three genuinely perfect rank-three runes. Lee has a stronger demon-compatible set but still requires additional repairs, while Noah concludes that Natural Disaster is too broad and unstable for safe advancement in its current form. Noah's new grimoire has consumed his former grimoire, stored runes, Dayton's scroll, and the Records of the Deceased, preserving the ledger's information while becoming hungry and partly responsive. That information records Father Linwick as dead, leaving the identity of the apparent Father unresolved. Near Dawnforge, the group learns that the great monster's enormous sand-armored snake is a construct hiding its true body. Noah dies during the first test, revives, and prepares a formation-assisted second attack. Elsewhere, Jalen identifies Karina as the route to Vermil. He gives her a functional magical replacement foot, then threatens her life unless she independently persuades Vermil to meet him with the stolen grimoire. Noah does not yet know that Karina is being forced toward him. Wizen, Azel, the Heron threat, the Church of Repose mission, and the apparent Father's identity all remain open.
