In short (whole book)

After Azel dies saving Lee, Noah and Moxie help her contain the unreadable rank-four rune formed from her demon power and broken Master Rune. Wizen's agents steal Arbitage's transport-cannon key, a portal artifact leading to the Damned Plains. While the enforcers search for Wizen, Noah repairs Tim's runes, guides his students' pattern training, creates the spatial-erasure rune Crumbling Space, and helps Moxie reach rank four. The assault on Wizen fails when he masters the key and overwhelms Arbitage's force. Noah, Moxie, and Lee follow him through a portal and become stranded in the Damned Plains. They enter a demon city in disguise, where Noah adopts the identity Spider, conquers a gang, and advances a starving young demon into a rank-three proxy. That proxy begins uniting local gangs and defeats a major challenger, attracting attention from greater powers. Brayden and Jalen keep Noah's students together at Arbitage while the trio searches for Wizen and a way home.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Noah Vines, publicly known as Vermil, teaches at Arbitage with Moxie and their demon companion Lee. His students include Todd, Isabel, Emily, and Alexandra. Noah possesses Sunder and has an unusual relationship with runes, while Azel has been linked to his soul. Moxie's history with the Torrin family continues to shape the dangers around their group. Wizen, a plant-and-mind mage, has already used controlled agents against them, and Brayden has been sent to interfere with his plans. The group begins this volume with Wizen still active and Lee facing enemies who hunt demons.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

Azel's link to Noah vanishes as Moxie, Alexandra, and Emily return from a rank-five Inquisitor's attack. Lee returns separately, visibly exhausted and altered after advancing to rank four, and explains what happened. She advanced so she could resist Raphael's blood-magic domain. When Raphael aimed a bloodline curse at Moxie, Lee intercepted it and Azel took the effect. Before dying, Azel called Lee his daughter and bound her dangerous new rune. Noah later discovers that Lee's demon rune has fused with her broken Master Rune, creating an unreadable structure that exerts a compulsive pull when viewed. The binding appears stable, so the group chooses observation over immediate removal. Noah gives Silvertide evidence linking Wizen to plant and mind magic and a Torrin-related objective. Elsewhere, Revin diverts a rank-seven apostle sent toward Arbitage. Noah also begins repairing the transport operator Tim's defective runes with Sunder and Renewal's healing fragment. His students, meanwhile, approach the next stage of pattern training, with Emily needing extra help.

Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)

Noah begins teaching the students to channel magic through their practiced patterns. Emily starts forming magical housing through her snowstorm-like style, Alexandra learns how dangerous interruption can be, Isabel demonstrates strong control over her escalating sword pattern, and Todd develops pattern-based imbuements that Noah cannot directly suppress. James reveals that his laziness is a disguise and shows a light pattern that deflects attention. Moxie begins rethinking her own growth pattern as the full life cycle of a flower. The search for Wizen's objective leads beneath Arbitage's transport cannon, where Noah finds Brayden fighting Barb, a rank-five fire mage. Noah's Sunder formation severs Barb's arm, but she escapes with the cannon's Torrin-donated power source. Brayden identifies it as a long-distance portal key to the Damned Plains. The cannon operator survives, while Barb's hidden healer dies in the destruction. Wizen now possesses the artifact and Arbitage loses ordinary access to its transport system.

Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)

Wizen takes the stolen key and prepares to collect four other items needed for his plan. Arbitage conceals the transport cannon's failure while its enforcers investigate Wizen's remaining voluntary agents. Brayden explains the difficulty of space runes and confirms that he knows Noah is not the original owner of Vermil's body. Noah and Moxie infer that Arbitage doubles as an artifact storehouse for noble families, though they cannot prove it. They refocus on their students and the advanced track. Todd demonstrates combat imbuements that recycle some energy from motion and explosions, while Lee's restrained rune remains stable but unsafe for heavy use. Noah removes a spare space rune from Lee to begin his own research. Moxie assembles plant and earth concepts for her future rank-four rune. Seeking rarer materials, Noah decides to find the collector who bought Violet Transference. Ulya then arrives to bring Noah and Moxie into the advanced track's political contest.

Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)

Verud warns Noah that Torrin-connected figures intend to force Emily out of Arbitage. Noah suspects the warning is part of a wider contest involving Verud, Jacob, and possible interest in Isabel's Master Rune. Ulya becomes a provisional informant, and Noah's group stages a disruptive advanced-track appearance to keep hostile students away from Emily and Isabel. Noah defeats Marley in a no-magic duel, while Alexandra wins first blood against Jacob's more composed sword fighter. Lee turns another challenge into an eating contest and wins. Silvertide identifies Otto, a rank-six King-family rune collector, as the buyer of Violet Transference. Noah trades Otto a monster rune for rank-two space and matter runes plus one hour in a restricted hunting ground. Bird, Otto's masked assistant, completes the exchange and guides Noah to the site. Karina and Contessa are living in Noah's nominal dorm room and caring for his companion. Noah enters the dangerous space-monster habitat under a strict recall limit.

Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)

Noah uses Sunder to draw a mass of space monsters and secretly harvests far more runes than Otto's catch paper can explain. A giant teleporting creature kills him, but his body returns and the transport cannon recalls him. His grimoire retains a large hidden collection of space runes. Conventional teleportation proves beyond his current understanding, so Noah builds on his personal experience of the void instead. He sunders several strong space runes into raw energy, opens an existing soul wound as a catalyst, and forms the rank-four rune Crumbling Space. Its first test erases part of a wall, but drains the rune and works only at very short range. At an enforcer meeting, Noah shares what he knows of Wizen and the Damned Plains key, prompting an active search. Brayden visits the students and joins Noah's commitment to stop Wizen. In the class competition, Isabel and Alexandra demonstrate equal but contrasting strength as the final evaluation begins.

Story so far - through chapter 70 (this book)

The students voluntarily leave Alexandra as the winner of the Earth Master Rune, recognizing her effort and need. She accepts it but delays testing it. Noah continues repairing Tim's soul, and the Linwick family head notices Tim's improvement without discovering Sunder. Tim grants Noah access to the Bleached River, where Noah gathers energy and confirms that Crumbling Space remains limited to the area immediately around him. Moxie then combines seven flawless runes into a rank-four rune expressing flowers, growth, death, and renewal. She gains a domain and begins exploring the rune's ability to turn organic matter into flowers. Noah reassures Lee that her own power is not lesser, though its effect on her identity remains a danger. Ulya receives Earth runes to rebuild her puppets and continues reporting on the advanced track. The school conflict is interrupted when Silvertide announces that Wizen has been found using the key in a ritual. Noah, Moxie, and Lee join the force preparing to breach his sanctum.

Story so far - through chapter 81 (this book)

Before departing, Noah completes Tim's final planned rune repair. The Arbitage assault enters Wizen's underground sanctum by a one-way transport jump. Godric divides the force, while Silvertide leads Noah, Moxie, and Lee toward the key. Wizen has already killed many enforcers and embedded the artifact in his dagger. He defeats Godric, Silvertide, Brayden, and the others with several kinds of magic and the key's spatial power. Noah wounds him with a Sunder formation, but Wizen recognizes Noah's use of Weave and suppresses the group. When Wizen opens a portal, Lee knocks him through, and Noah and Moxie refuse to release her. All three are pulled into the Damned Plains. They survive, disguise themselves as demons, gather sacrifices, and gain entry to a city carried by an enormous walking creature and ruled by a rank-seven demon. With no route home, they decide to build influence. Noah begins distributing food and performing behind a mask to create the appearance of a powerful hidden faction.

Story so far - through chapter 93 (this book)

The masked figure called Spider protects a starving group from a gang enforcer, then forces two young demons to guide him to their street lord. He defeats the gang, kills its leader, bans the extraction of food from residents, and appoints one of the starving youths as his acting ruler. Spider is Noah's new identity, supported by the disguised Moxie and Lee. Noah rapidly advances his proxy from rank one to rank three, stopping before the more dangerous identity changes associated with rank four. Lee secures a neighboring gang after killing its leader and coercing his sister into a false succession story. The young street lord proves his new strength, accepts the neighboring leader's submission on lenient terms, and discovers that his demon nature feeds on knowledge. He makes the experienced leader his second-in-command. Violet, his closest companion, asks Noah to advance her as well so she can protect him. Noah agrees, and Violet offers to guide him to an apothecary for the needed potions.

Story so far - through chapter 99 (this book)

At Arbitage, Todd, Isabel, Emily, Alexandra, and James train together against Jalen. Jalen recruits Bird to support them with family resources while keeping her private research concealed. In the demon city, Noah's Spider reputation spreads as he prepares Violet's advancement. His young proxy allies with a rank-three demon who feeds on fear and learns to set limits on their mutual energy exchange. When the Silent Silver Tooth sends a rank-three representative to assess the new faction, the proxy turns the negotiation into a truthful question game. Each answer gives the knowledge demon more energy, while his fear-feeding ally controls the emotional contest. The representative kills her own guards to restore herself but still cannot recover the advantage, and she flees in fear. The proxy then commits surplus food to hungry outsiders and resolves to change the city's existing power structure. A hidden observer reports Spider's expansion to a powerful mistress, who expects the city's ruler to respond but orders continued surveillance. Noah, Moxie, and Lee remain stranded, Wizen still has the key, and Spider's growing faction has attracted stronger attention.

How does it end? (ending)

Wizen keeps the Damned Plains key and escapes there with Barb after overwhelming the Arbitage assault. Noah, Moxie, and Lee are stranded in the same realm, but survive and enter a mobile city ruled by a rank-seven demon. Under the Spider identity, Noah captures a local gang, elevates a starving young demon into a rank-three knowledge demon, and begins absorbing neighboring territories. The proxy and his fear-feeding ally repel a challenge from the Silent Silver Tooth, but the faction's growth has drawn the attention of stronger city powers. Noah and Moxie remain committed to stabilizing Lee's dangerous merged rune while they seek Wizen, the key, and a route home. At Arbitage, Brayden and Jalen keep the students enrolled and training. Alexandra holds the Earth Master Rune, Todd continues his imbuement work, and Tim operates the damaged transport cannon under severe limits. No rescue path has been established, and Wizen's ultimate purpose remains unknown.
