Revolution

The ninth entry in the series opens with a flashback to Unit 777, a newly activated synthetic soldier whose creator secretly preserves his free will despite mandatory service in a battle-synth body. In the present, Jason Burke and the Phoenix crew, joined by that same synth now known as Lucky, take on a reconnaissance job for the criminal power Saditava Mok, who has learned of a possible Confed collapse and points them toward a covert military buildup on Lucky's homeworld, Kepri. Investigating discreetly, Jason and Lucky visit Lucky's creator only to be exposed to hostile Ministry forces, forcing them into hiding and a tense escape from the planet. Piecing together what they learn, the crew begins to suspect the recalled battle synths are defending Kepri's control over the Confed's central financial system, though the scale of the danger and Mok's own motives remain unresolved.
