Rinkitink in Oz recap

When warriors from Regos and Coregos conquer Pingaree and enslave its people, young Prince Inga escapes with visiting King Rinkitink and Rinkitink's talking goat, Bilbil. Guided and protected by three magic pearls, Inga crosses the sea, defeats the invaders, and frees many captives. Queen Cor steals the pearls for a time, but the charcoal burner's daughter Zella helps Inga recover them. The enemy rulers flee with Inga's parents to the underground Nome Kingdom, where Kaliko tries to prevent their release. Dorothy and the Wizard arrive from Oz, free the captives, and uncover Bilbil's true identity as the enchanted Prince Bobo. Pingaree is restored, while the reluctant Rinkitink is eventually fetched home to rule Gilgad.

Ozma rules the peaceful fairyland of Oz with Dorothy and the Wizard among her friends. The underground Nome Kingdom has troubled Oz before, although Kaliko now occupies its throne. This adventure begins on Pingaree, outside Oz, with a new royal family and the visiting King Rinkitink.

Prince Inga lives on the prosperous island of Pingaree with King Kitticut and Queen Garee. Their guest, the merry King Rinkitink of Gilgad, arrives with his bad-tempered talking goat Bilbil. Kitticut tells Inga the secret of three pearls: one grants strength, one protects its bearer, and one offers wise counsel. Soon warriors from Regos and Coregos invade. Pingaree is plundered, its people and rulers are carried away, and Inga, Rinkitink, and Bilbil are left behind. With the pearls hidden in his shoes, Inga gains the power and guidance needed to act. A magic boat carries the three survivors north as the young prince sets out to recover his parents and free his kingdom.

The magic boat brings Inga's party to the twin islands of Regos and Coregos. Protected and strengthened by the pearls, Inga defeats forces that greatly outnumber him and releases Pingaree's enslaved people. Queen Cor cannot overcome him openly, so she watches for the secret of his power. Rinkitink innocently moves the prince's shoes, allowing Cor to steal them and leaving Inga without the pearls when he believes he needs them most. Zella, the kind daughter of the charcoal burner Nikobob, is sent on errands to the queen and befriends the prince. With her help, and with Bilbil's noisy interference, Inga recovers the shoes and their hidden magic. The friends escape Cor's control, but the rulers responsible for the invasion still hold Inga's parents.

Once Inga regains the pearls, the power of Regos and Coregos collapses. Nikobob refuses an offered crown, preferring his independent life, and the freed people prepare to rebuild. King Gos and Queen Cor flee with King Kitticut and Queen Garee to the underground Nome Kingdom. Inga, Rinkitink, and Bilbil follow them and confront Kaliko, the Nome King. Kaliko shelters the fugitives and tries to bargain for Inga's magic, then uses enchantment and deception to keep the captives out of reach. Even the white pearl's counsel and the companions' courage cannot easily overcome the Nome King's underground power, leaving Inga at the end of another contest that strength alone cannot settle.

Dorothy and the Wizard arrive in the Nome Kingdom with Ozma's backing. Kaliko yields, and King Kitticut and Queen Garee are freed. The Wizard also discovers that Bilbil is really Prince Bobo of Boboland under an old enchantment and restores his human form. Ozma welcomes the whole company to a banquet in the Emerald City before Inga returns with his parents and people to Pingaree. The island kingdom is restored, the three pearls remain in the royal family's keeping, and Inga has shown that he can meet danger with courage and judgment. Rinkitink tries to remain with his friends rather than resume the tiresome business of governing, but a delegation from Gilgad finally arrives and carries its wandering king home.

Dorothy and the Wizard reach the Nome Kingdom under Ozma's authority and end Kaliko's attempt to keep the royal captives. King Kitticut and Queen Garee are freed, and the Wizard also breaks the old enchantment on Bilbil, restoring him as Prince Bobo of Boboland. Inga, Rinkitink, Bobo, and the rescued rulers visit the Emerald City as Ozma's guests before returning to Pingaree. The people of Pingaree are brought home, the island is rebuilt, and the magic pearls remain with its royal house. Rinkitink would happily prolong his visit, but representatives from Gilgad finally arrive to carry their king back to his neglected duties. Inga's courage has proved him ready for the responsibilities that will one day be his.
