Ritual of Ruin recap

Rezkin survives King Caydean's attack and assembles dwarven, Fae, elven, and Spiritua support for the Daemon war. He and Azeria enter a life bond, return to Kyle as emperor and empress, and break the Asshai blockade with help from Tam's newly awakened Fae authority. Meanwhile, Wesson's attempts to free oath-bound mages expose his own Daemon bond and produce oath transfer rather than freedom. Caydean, himself inhabited by a Daemon ruler, turns Kaibain's new temple into a vast nexus. Rezkin's team attacks during its opening ritual, but the nexus releases Daemon power across the city. Rezkin wounds Caydean and escapes with the ritual key and his bonded dragon, yet Caydean's survival is unknown, one ally is possessed, and Wesson is left behind in Kaibain.

Previously: Rezkin became ruler of Kyle while opposing King Caydean, whose campaign threatened Rezkin's allies and the wider realm. Rezkin's apparent death left his cousin Tieran Nirius governing Kyle as regent. Farson and Wesson continued resistance work, while Yserria and Malcius remained allied investigators, all without knowing Rezkin had survived. Prince Thresson, another royal claimant, remained caught in the consequences of Caydean's rule. Tam was missing from Rezkin's wider circle. Rezkin had also formed a magical bond with an infant dragon, creating a new responsibility that could not easily be set aside. His allies were scattered across political, magical, and military fronts, with Kyle forced to endure the effects of losing its ruler. Their obligations remained unresolved. The struggle now extends beyond rival thrones: Daemon influence has become a direct danger, and the alliances, magical knowledge, and military power needed to confront it are still divided.

Rezkin escapes King Caydean badly injured, accompanied by Azeria and his bonded infant dragon. Caydean's Spiritua and Daemon strength is greater than theirs, while the dragon's need for magical energy is steadily weakening Rezkin. Azeria conceals his survival and learns that dwarven craft may offer the best surviving defense against Daemons. She, her former mentor, Rezkin, and the dragon travel to Grestag. Yserria and Malcius separately uncover Caydean's acquisition of a large shipment of purple metal that absorbs power, though its intended use remains unknown. Grestag's defensive machines nearly kill the travelers before Rezkin reaches a surviving dwarf engineer. The dwarves explain that their metal stores magical energy and resists Daemon attacks. They make fitted armor for the party and offer as many as one hundred machines, but operating them requires an immense source of power. A dangerous spring between realms may supply it. A young dwarven apprentice joins Rezkin with a staff designed to connect such a source to dwarven armor and machinery.

Wesson begins trying to free battle mages from oaths to King Caydean. His first attempt kills the captive, but he continues the research and equips a potentially compromised battle mage to return as a spy. Farson accepts the danger as necessary intelligence work. Rezkin's party enters the Fae forest seeking the spring needed to power the dwarven machines. There Rezkin discovers Tam alive. Tam can understand the Fae and has been pressed into serving as their liaison and military trainee. Rezkin secures access to the spring by agreeing that Tam will command a future force shared by humans and Fae. Azeria objects to the bargain but remains committed to acting beside Rezkin. She and Rezkin also acknowledge their romantic attachment, though they postpone a life bond because either partner would die soon after the other. Rezkin then takes Tam to Kaibain for practical training. With magical aid from Rezkin and Wesson, Tam kills a Daemon's human host and drives the entity back to its own realm. The encounter proves that ordinary troops cannot face even a weak Daemon without magical protection, sharpening Rezkin's need for a broader supernatural alliance.

Wesson continues lethal oath-breaking trials in secret while Kaibain fills with hungry pilgrims and immigrants drawn by King Caydean's mandates. His battle-mage spy passes a truth-tested debriefing and is assigned to Silas, a healer trained for combat. Silas reveals himself as a servant of the Daemon ruler inhabiting Caydean. He and his accomplices force a siphon Daemon called the Smith into the spy. The host remains aware but cannot always control her body. Because the Smith retains skills from earlier hosts, it can forge the enchanted metal required for Caydean's concealed project. It preserves Wesson's relay as a useful path to the rebels. Elsewhere, Rezkin's party reaches the inter-realm spring but finds it guarded by a powerful being and altered creatures. The dwarven apprentice succeeds in linking her staff to the spring, securing the prospective energy source. During the fight Rezkin enters the spring to save his dragon companion and releases its power against the guardian. Both survive, but any lasting effects of the exposure remain unknown. Azeria takes them to her people's capital for treatment, exposing Rezkin's survival there. A wary elven leader then agrees to train Rezkin in exchange for political independence and Rezkin's submission to magical and combat instruction.

Training pushes Rezkin toward exhaustion and emotions he has long suppressed. He and Azeria choose a mutual life bond that joins their reserves and makes each dependent on the other's survival. Rezkin becomes a Spiritua apprentice while hiding the full speed of his progress. In restricted records he discovers evidence of an old attempt to remove a Daemon from a living host. The elven ruler admits that the procedure expelled the Daemon but destroyed the woman's independent will, and his people now execute possessed hosts instead. Rezkin insists that the failed method should be improved rather than abandoned. The ruler will not commit the whole nation to war, though individuals may join Rezkin. In Kaibain, Wesson learns that possession is widespread around the palace and temple. His attempt to free a coerced relay worker appears to kill her, but she revives or survives and escapes after identifying him as wanted. Rezkin's dragon companion recovers from the spring much larger and able to speak, though still young in mind. Rezkin finally reveals his true skill to his instructor in a duel. After hearing Rezkin's purpose, the instructor places Spiritua support under his command. Rezkin prepares to return to Kyle with Azeria and the dragon.

Rezkin returns to Kyle during an Asshai blockade and formally meets Prince Thresson as his older brother. He resumes the throne, names Azeria empress, and keeps Tieran Nirius as regent while he conducts the war. In Kaibain, Rezkin reveals his survival to Farson and Wesson. Farson renews his allegiance, and a Spiritua identifies Wesson as a complete human bound to a powerful Daemon nature. Investigation of Caydean's temple becomes urgent. Wesson's undercover contact is temporarily controlled by a Daemon opposed to Caydean's Daemon ruler. It warns that the temple opening will activate a major nexus built with enchanted metal. Wesson also recaptures the relay worker from his experiment and discovers that he transferred her oath from Caydean to himself instead of breaking it. She reluctantly returns to enemy service as his agent. Rezkin then attacks the blockade with a new mage-crewed warship, portal teams, Spiritua, and Fae support under Tam. Tam's elemental forces grow into a storm that threatens both fleets, but he discovers that he is partly Fae and commands them to stop. The blockade is shattered, prisoners are secured, survivors are rescued, and Kyle's sea access is restored.

Rezkin leads teams into Kaibain to disrupt the temple opening. Wesson enters openly by impersonating the Daemon lord that the possessed congregation believes him to be. The temple's Daemon-held general confirms that the entire building is a spell nexus made from enchanted-metal runes, then traps Wesson in a siphon chamber where every spell he casts feeds the ritual. Rezkin's tunnel team reaches the central chamber, and Azeria and other allies infiltrate among the ritual priests. When the ceremony begins, Wesson devises a tiny lightning construct that releases a captive Daemon and creates a distraction. Rezkin attacks King Caydean on the nexus platform, but the ritual begins draining Wesson's Daemon power and completes despite the fighting. A wave of Daemon power spreads over Kaibain. Rezkin overloads his black blade, breaks Caydean's weapon, and knocks him from the temple. Caydean's body disappears before his death can be confirmed. Rezkin takes the ritual key and orders a retreat. During the escape, released power possesses one of the twin allies and turns him hostile. Rezkin escapes with his bonded dragon, but Wesson never reaches the portal and is left behind. With much of crowded Kaibain potentially possessed, Rezkin now needs a scalable exorcism, a way to save his ally, and a means to recover Wesson and understand the key.

Kyle is no longer under blockade, and Tieran Nirius remains regent while Rezkin leads the larger war. Azeria is Rezkin's empress and life-bonded partner. Tam has learned that he is partly Fae and can command the elemental forces placed under him, though he still must master that authority. Dwarven machines have a prospective power source, individual elven allies have joined Rezkin, and the Spiritua support his command, but the elven nation has not entered the war. In Kaibain, the temple ritual succeeds despite the infiltration. Daemon power spreads through the crowded city, one of Rezkin's twin allies becomes possessed, and a mass method of removing Daemons from their hosts is urgently needed. Rezkin escapes with his bonded dragon and a rune-marked ritual key after badly wounding King Caydean, whose missing body leaves his fate uncertain. Wesson does not reach the escape portal and remains somewhere inside Kaibain. Finding him, understanding the key, and containing the possession crisis are the immediate unresolved tasks.
