Ritualist

By Dakota Krout

After an IED and helicopter strike leave Army medic Joe Nelson paralyzed and his marriage ended, he accepts an irreversible offer to transfer his mind permanently into the immersive game Eternium, a one-way trade that destroys his real body in exchange for a mobile new life. Rather than take a standard class, Joe completes every optional starting trial, becoming the first of over a million players to do so, and is then approached by a mysterious Hidden God offering the secret Ritualist class in exchange for uncovering forbidden knowledge. Presenting himself publicly only as a cleric to avoid prejudice against his true class, Joe joins the Wanderers guild, earns his place through healing in early monster fights, and begins drawing the attention of both grateful allies and a hostile player-killing guild determined to force him into its ranks.
