In short (whole book)

Army medic Joe is paralyzed after a helicopter attack and permanently transfers into Eternium, where he becomes a concealed Ritualist serving the forgotten deity Tatum while publicly appearing to be a cleric and scholar. He joins the Wanderers, develops healing and ritual abilities, survives player killers, helps make night travel possible, and supports Tiona's party through a growing conflict with wolfmen. Joe captures an enemy altar for Tatum and redirects its summoned creatures against the Wolfman Nation, shortly before the Wanderers accept the royal quest Shatter a People and his party separates. Working alone, he captures the mage Cel and uncovers the Accords that magically control the Mage's College. Joe destroys the Accords using a one-use escape from contractual penalties, freeing the mages. The Archmage dies during a failed attempt to destroy Ardania, and the college begins reform. Joe and the Wanderers receive public credit. Tatum makes Joe his Chosen, gives him the public Arc Cleric class and Resurrection, while Joe remains a hidden Ritualist planning to build a dedicated ritual team.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

Army medic Sergeant Nelson is caught in a helicopter strike while evacuating wounded soldiers. About a month later, he wakes in a hospital as a quadriplegic. His marriage ends, and months of dependence follow until a former medic colleague offers permanent entry into Eternium. The transfer requires an expensive custom capsule and will destroy his physical body, but it promises a mobile new life. His mother pays for the equipment, and he enters under the name Joe after his colleague suggests that beating Eternium might offer a way back to reality. Joe completes every optional class trial, earning rare titles, including a one-use means of escaping the consequences of a magical contract. A weakened Hidden God then recruits him as a follower. Joe accepts the secret Ritualist class and Occultist path, though other people see him as a cleric. In Ardania, his healing earns the city guard's trust and draws Tiona's attention. He joins her Wanderers party, learns that death and pain carry serious costs, and saves the armored fighter Dylan. The party defeats a direwolf, but later Headshot and the Hardcores kill Joe's companions and try to force him into their guild. Joe chooses to leap from a cliff rather than submit.

Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)

Joe survives the cliff through delayed healing and protective equipment, only to die to goblins below and endure his first respawn. Back in Ardania, he finds the Wanderers at war with the Hardcores and begins studying ritual magic under the cover of library work. He creates organization rituals that transform a shop and restore order to the library, earning Boris's support for a scholarly path. The Hardcores abandon their city contracts, but the Wanderers' tavern burns soon afterward. Aten brings Joe into the displaced guild on favorable terms and later makes him an officer responsible for building relations with the guards. Joe even heals the imprisoned Headshot so the player killer can survive to face trial. Reunited with Tiona, Dylan, Chad, and the quiet rogue Guess, Joe joins a wolfman hunt that leaves the party outside Ardania after dark. They defeat undead creatures, and Joe establishes a protective ritual around their camp. Their survival proves that travel at night is possible, but it also makes settlements vulnerable to night raids. The Hidden God finally gives Joe the name Tatum and a sigil through which earned experience can strengthen their relationship.

Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)

Joe commits himself to ritual study and learns mana control from Terra, a Wanderers mage repaying the guild for her education. He adds offensive magic but must balance it against his duty as healer. After a prisoner kills him during treatment, Joe learns the man was a prince and reaches level five through a royal reward. His Occultist profession appears publicly as Scholar. This new ability lets him identify reliable writing and expose false costs and dangerous traps in his ritual book. Joe revises his wards into practical defenses for the Wanderers' barracks. During increasingly difficult wolfman battles, Chad survives poisoning through Joe's improved cleansing, while Dylan is killed after a survival fight appears finished. The Hardcores then assault the guild barracks. Joe helps repel them, and the shaken Dylan admits that realistic pain has undermined his willingness to tank. With a smith's challenge and equipment, Dylan unlocks the defensive Bulwark class and regains confidence. The party begins sustained operations against wolfman scouts, warriors, and shamans, with Tiona stressing tactical discipline and the practical need to earn enough for their game-pod payments.

Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)

Tiona's party assaults a wolfman sacrificial altar. Guess disrupts the shamans' defenses, Chad helps finish them, and Dylan shields the group while Joe reaches the final captive. Joe accidentally kills the main shaman at the decisive moment, causing the system to treat him as the ritual's sacrificer. Forced to act quickly, he raises his ritual skill, redirects the summoned beast wave from Ardania onto the wolfmen, and dedicates the altar to Tatum. He gains a concealed fast-travel site and a quest to reclaim more lost holy places. Soon afterward, the Wanderers become a noble guild. Ardania's queen explains that the human and Wolfman nations are locked in a struggle for survival and gives Aten the secret Shatter a People quest to destroy the enemy nation and seize its throne. Joe realizes that his redirected wave killed wolfman civilians as well as fighters. Tiona then dissolves the field party to pursue Royal Guard-linked specialization training, leaving Joe to work alone. He rents a warehouse and creates a strong exclusion ward for ritual research. A rogue wind-and-fire mage named Cel enters the workshop, attacks him, and is captured. Cel reveals that the Mage's College uses magically binding Accords to suppress independent magic and control its students, but warns that destroying them under outside control could kill every signatory.

Story so far - through chapter 37 (this book)

Joe keeps Cel contained while continuing research with Boris, who approves a quest to recover an assassinated investigator's methods for identifying criminals. When Cel's Master of Fire believes his apprentice dead, he attacks and kills Joe in Ardania. The attack is judged invalid, allowing Joe to return without the normal experience loss. Joe proves Cel is alive, and the master agrees to escort them to the Mage's College. Their discussion reveals that the Accords prevent even mild criticism and may force the master to act against Cel. Before dawn, Joe prepares an undisclosed three-circle contingency with Cel's mana, then secretly releases the containment ward. College mages and guards take both men into custody. A tribunal orders Cel to undergo re-education, sign the Accords again, and accept promotion to journeyman. Joe receives a sentence of forced mana service, enormous debt, and permanent loss of arcane magic, but rejects the imposed quest. Both prisoners are used to charge the Accords before the ceremony. Cel signs again under apparent compulsion. The Archmage then presents Joe to the assembled students as a rogue mage who will be bound next, while Joe reaches the contract book with his hidden countermeasure ready.

Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)

Joe invokes the single-use Terms and Conditions effect he earned during his entry trials, protecting himself from contract-based consequences, and activates Stasis. The Accords are destroyed while he is immobile and invulnerable, freeing the Mage's College from their compulsion. The former council turns on the Archmage, who admits that he created the enslavement and diverted the college's strength away from Ardania's war. He tries to destroy the city with an unstable magical core. Joe stops him, and mana stored through the Accords' system overloads and kills the Archmage. The remaining mages neutralize the core. Joe asks the freed college to permit independent training, reduce fees, broaden access, aid the war, and exchange research with Boris's library. The Master of Fire removes the Warlock title Joe briefly incurred by breaking his promise. A public announcement credits Joe and the Wanderers with freeing the college, which opens new specializations and lowers costs. Their rewards include exceptional standing and progress toward Shatter a People. Tatum names Joe his Chosen, advances his visible identity to Arc Cleric, and grants daily Resurrection. Joe reaches level nine while remaining secretly a Ritualist. He decides to seek mage training and recruit a dependable ritual team, with the long-term goal of building a coven capable of far greater workings.

How does it end? (ending)

Joe uses his single contractual escape to destroy the Accords without suffering their contract-based consequences. The compelled mages are freed, and the Archmage admits that he enslaved the Mage's College and withheld its power from Ardania's war. When he tries to destroy the city, the stored mana system overloads and kills him. The college agrees to broaden access, reduce costs, share research, and aid the kingdom. Cel is free after his coerced promotion, while the Master of Fire removes Joe's temporary Warlock title. Joe and the Wanderers receive public credit and exceptional standing. Tatum makes Joe his Chosen, advances his public class to Arc Cleric, and grants him daily Resurrection, while Joe's true Ritualist and Occultist paths remain concealed. Aten's guild continues the secret Shatter a People campaign against the Wolfman Nation. Tiona has left the old party for Royal Guard-linked training, Dylan has renewed confidence as a Bulwark, and the later paths of Dylan, Chad, and Guess are not settled. Terra still owes service for her college training. Joe ends at level nine, seeking magical instruction and a dependable ritual team that can eventually become a powerful coven. His possible return to reality, Tatum's restoration, the Hardcores conflict, Seeker of Truth, and the war all remain open.
