In short (whole book)

Jarlaxle and Artemis Entreri return from Zhengyi's ruin owing explanations to Gareth Dragonsbane and the dragon sisters, while Entreri struggles with shadow magic and a fragile relationship with Calihye. Jarlaxle answers the pressure with a larger deception: he establishes Castle D'aerthe in Vaasa and presents himself as a would-be ruler, luring the Citadel of Assassins into exposing its strength. With Athrogate, Kimmuriel and Bregan D'aerthe, he maneuvers Gareth's champions and the assassins into a confrontation that breaks the Citadel without leaving him king. Entreri and Calihye turn on one another, and he believes he kills her; Jarlaxle secretly saves her and has her memories of Entreri removed. Jarlaxle then takes Entreri back toward his childhood home. Forced to confront the abuse, betrayal and abandonment behind his chosen identity, Entreri kills those he holds responsible but refuses to let ancestry dictate his future. He and Jarlaxle remain uneasy partners, and Entreri ends the trilogy changed by attachments he can no longer dismiss as weakness.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Jarlaxle and Artemis Entreri left Calimport after apparently destroying Crenshinibon, the Crystal Shard whose history had repeatedly intersected Entreri's rivalry with Drizzt Do'Urden. In the Bloodstone Lands they joined an expedition into a Vaasan ruin sustained by the dead Witch-King Zhengyi's magic. The company rescued the half-orc Arrayan but lost several members, and Commander Ellery and the wizard Canthan were exposed as conspirators and killed. The dwarf Athrogate broke with them and became Jarlaxle's ally. Entreri formed an uneasy bond with Calihye. In the final struggle, his vampiric dagger drained a creature of living shadow, leaving him physically renewed, altered in appearance and connected to shadow magic. Jarlaxle emerged with relics and obligations to local powers, including the dragon sisters Ilnezhara and Tazmikella, while Gareth Dragonsbane's government was left to judge what the adventurers had done in Vaasa.

Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)

Jarlaxle, Entreri, Calihye and Athrogate return from the Vaasan expedition to a region full of people who want answers. King Gareth Dragonsbane must account for Ellery's death, the disturbance of Zhengyi's relics and the possibility that Jarlaxle removed dangerous magic for private use. Ilnezhara and Tazmikella are equally interested in what was recovered and regard Jarlaxle's evasions as a breach of obligations made before the mission. Entreri is no longer the man who entered the ruin. Shadow clings to him, his body has been unnaturally renewed, and Calihye's presence keeps drawing emotions he once suppressed. Jarlaxle tries to balance royal scrutiny, draconic demands and Entreri's growing distrust without surrendering either treasure or freedom. The road toward Bloodstone therefore becomes a negotiation conducted under the threat of several kinds of overwhelming force.

Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)

Gareth's champions, including the monk Kane and the intelligence master Celedon Kierney, refuse to accept the simple version of Jarlaxle's story. The dragon sisters also close off easy escape, forcing the drow to offer something more valuable than punishment: a way to expose the surviving organization behind recent violence in Vaasa. Jarlaxle presents his continued presence in the country as bait for enemies of the Bloodstone throne. Entreri sees that each promise buys time rather than trust, but he participates because the alternatives are imprisonment, a direct fight with dragons or abandoning Calihye and Athrogate. His shadow abilities help the group pass obstacles that once would have required Jarlaxle's magic, increasing both his independence and his unease about what he absorbed. By the time they leave the immediate gauntlet, Jarlaxle has turned their reckoning into permission for another dangerous operation.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

Bregan D'aerthe establishes a surface fortress, Castle D'aerthe, and Jarlaxle allows rumors to portray him as a new claimant to Vaasa. Kimmuriel supplies drow troops, psionic coordination and concealment, while Athrogate gives the enterprise a visible champion. The fortress is less a capital than a lure. Knellict and the Citadel of Assassins cannot ignore an outsider occupying territory and gathering magic once associated with Zhengyi, and Gareth cannot ignore either faction if they appear ready to build a new tyranny. Jarlaxle expects both sides to move against the threat he has staged. Entreri works within the deception but grows more suspicious of the personal plans his partner keeps separate from the political one. Calihye wants him to acknowledge their bond; he answers uncertainty with control, making every disagreement resemble betrayal before either has actually chosen it.

Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)

Knellict overreaches in response to Castle D'aerthe, bringing the Citadel's agents and ambitions into the open. Jarlaxle releases enough information for Gareth's forces to strike the organization while preserving routes for Bregan D'aerthe to withdraw. The apparent contest for the title of Vaasa's king ends as a trap rather than a coronation: Jarlaxle gains room to leave, the Citadel loses its concealed advantage and Gareth avoids replacing one Witch-King with another. The personal alliance does not survive as neatly. Calihye's grief over the last expedition and Entreri's inability to trust affection turn their relationship into a confrontation. Old loyalties connected to Ellery's death surface, and Calihye attacks the man she also cares for. Entreri responds with the lethal instincts that have always protected him. He believes he has killed her, and Jarlaxle allows that belief to stand while arranging matters outside his sight.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

With the Vaasan operation closing, Jarlaxle turns from kingdoms to the history Entreri refuses to discuss. He has gathered fragments about the assassin's childhood and decides that leaving the old wounds untouched will only let them continue governing every attachment Entreri forms. Entreri reads the investigation as a profound violation, especially after Calihye's apparent death, but cannot ignore information about the family and community from which he fled. Their road carries them toward the southern places where the boy who became Artemis Entreri first learned to treat feeling as a weapon others could use. Memories return unevenly: abandonment, exploitation and abuse are mixed with later explanations that Entreri no longer trusts. Jarlaxle does not offer forgiveness on anyone's behalf. He instead makes it possible for Entreri to meet the surviving people connected to those memories and choose what their blood relationship means.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

Entreri confronts the people and institutions responsible for the misery of his childhood and the path that delivered him into Calimport's criminal world. He takes vengeance where he finds the guilty still within reach, but the encounters do not reveal a noble patriarch whose blood can supply a better identity. The lesson is instead that parentage, violation and abandonment explain parts of him without owning his future. Jarlaxle's interference infuriates Entreri, yet it also breaks the silence on which those memories depended. Unknown to him, Jarlaxle has kept Calihye from dying and asked Kimmuriel to remove her memories of Entreri, leaving her alive without the bond that brought them both to violence. Athrogate remains with Jarlaxle after the false kingdom in Vaasa is dismantled. Entreri and Jarlaxle survive their road together with trust badly strained but with their partnership intact. Entreri no longer defines himself solely through Drizzt, Calihye, or the men who shaped his childhood; that independence is less empty, and therefore more difficult, than the perfection he once pursued.

How does it end? (ending)

Jarlaxle's Vaasan scheme draws the Citadel of Assassins into the open and gives Gareth Dragonsbane's forces the opportunity to break its power without allowing Jarlaxle to become an unchecked ruler himself. The drow abandons the appearance of a permanent kingdom once it has served its purpose, and Athrogate remains with him. Entreri's relationship with Calihye ends in violence when the grief and divided loyalties left by Ellery's death overwhelm their fragile trust. Entreri believes Calihye dead; Jarlaxle secretly has her restored and arranges for Kimmuriel to remove the memories tying her to Entreri, leaving her alive but outside his life. Jarlaxle then leads Entreri to the place of his childhood and forces the history he has buried into the open. Entreri confronts the men and institutions responsible for abuse, abandonment and his entry into a life of killing. He takes vengeance on those still within reach but rejects the idea that blood, a father or an abuser has the right to define what he becomes. He survives the journey with his partnership with Jarlaxle damaged yet intact, carrying self-knowledge rather than the final emptiness he once sought through defeating Drizzt.
