A young squirrel of Redwall Abbey who admires Martin the Warrior and longs to prove that he can be brave. Energetic, impulsive, and handy with a sling, he treats adventure as a game until events beyond the Abbey demand more of him.
Arula (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A young molemaid at Redwall and Samkim's close friend. Her broad dialect and cheerful appetite disguise a practical traveller with courage, common sense, and the digging skill of her species.
Thrugg (Supporting)

An otter living at Redwall Abbey, known for his strength, endurance, and readiness to help. He is dependable in a crisis and more comfortable acting than debating.
Dumble (Supporting)

A very young dormouse in Redwall's care. Small enough to be carried by an adult traveller, he is curious, trusting, and unexpectedly resolute when separated from the safety of the Abbey.

The badger ruler of Salamandastron and commander of its fighting hares. A formidable warrior with a fierce temper, he has raised Mara as his daughter but struggles to temper his protectiveness with the freedom she wants.
Mara (Protagonist)

Urthstripe's adopted badger daughter, raised inside Salamandastron under the close watch of its lord and Long Patrol. Strong-willed and restless, she resents being treated as a child and wants to see the world beyond the mountain.
Pikkle Ffolger (Supporting)

A young hare of Salamandastron and Mara's devoted companion. Talkative, hungry, and outwardly light-hearted, he follows her lead even when her plans take them beyond the mountain's protection.
Ferahgo (Antagonist)

A blue-eyed weasel warlord whose horde advances on Salamandastron. He cultivates a calm, reasonable manner while using poison, deception, and sudden violence to remove anyone in his way.
Klitch (Antagonist)

Ferahgo's son, a young weasel who shares his father's blue eyes and ambition. Clever, vain, and impatient to command, he watches for any chance to advance himself within the horde.
Sapwood (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
A veteran hare sergeant of Salamandastron's Long Patrol. Blunt, disciplined, and loyal to Urthstripe, he helps hold the mountain's defenders together as danger approaches.
Dingeye (Minor)
First appears in chapter 8
A stoat who deserts Ferahgo's horde with his companion Thura. Hungry, dishonest, and chiefly interested in staying alive, he heads east through Mossflower without understanding all that he carries with him.
Thura (Minor)
First appears in chapter 8
Dingeye's fellow deserter from Ferahgo's army. He is a shabby opportunist who follows his companion toward Redwall in search of food and shelter.
Log-a-Log (Supporting)

The leader of a travelling band of Guosim shrews. Suspicious of strangers but bound by loyalty once friendship is established, he commands skilled boatbeasts and fighters.
