In short (whole book)
As the weasel assassin Ferahgo marches a horde toward the badger stronghold of Salamandastron, Lord Urthstripe's adopted daughter Mara rebels against his strict protection and runs away with the hare Pikkle. At Redwall Abbey, two deserters from Ferahgo's army bring the deadly Dryditch fever and steal Martin the Warrior's sword. The young squirrel Samkim and molemaid Arula pursue them west, while the otter Thrugg travels north with the infant dormouse Dumble to find the rare Flowers of Icetor needed for a cure. These journeys gather allies and eventually converge around the besieged mountain. The flowers save Redwall, and the returning wanderers help Salamandastron's Long Patrol resist Ferahgo. In the final battle Urthstripe and Ferahgo die together, Klitch dies during his escape, and the horde collapses. Mara returns with a better understanding of her adoptive father and mourns him, while Samkim and Arula bring Martin's sword safely home after earning the responsibility they once only imagined.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Redwall Abbey stands in Mossflower as a peaceful home whose creatures preserve the sword and memory of Martin the Warrior. Far to the west, Salamandastron is a mountain stronghold traditionally ruled by a badger and defended by fighting hares. This story introduces a new generation at both places and does not require the outcome of an earlier Redwall tale.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
Two dangers begin far apart. Ferahgo the Assassin, a blue-eyed weasel whose courtesy conceals a talent for poison and betrayal, leads a large horde toward Salamandastron. The mountain is ruled by Urthstripe the Strong, a badger warrior whose adopted daughter Mara is increasingly angered by his attempts to control her. Mara and her hare friend Pikkle decide to leave the mountain and find freedom for themselves. At Redwall Abbey, the young squirrel Samkim and molemaid Arula dream of adventures beyond the walls, with little idea of their cost.
Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)
Mara and Pikkle are now travelling beyond Salamandastron, while Urthstripe's anger at their departure adds to the pressure of preparing the mountain against Ferahgo. The Assassin advances carefully, using scouts, threats, and internal rivalries to keep his horde obedient; his ambitious son Klitch is among those waiting for weakness. In Mossflower, Ferahgo's deserters Dingeye and Thura reach Redwall. Their arrival links the distant war to the Abbey even though its residents do not yet understand the danger.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
Dingeye and Thura rob Redwall and flee with Martin the Warrior's sword. Samkim and Arula go after them, changing an idle wish for adventure into a dangerous journey west. The stoats have also brought Dryditch fever into the Abbey. As the illness spreads, Redwall's healers learn that their best hope is the Flowers of Icetor, a rare plant found far to the north. Thrugg the otter undertakes the search, with the infant dormouse Dumble caught up in the expedition. Redwall is left fighting sickness while its travellers head in opposite directions.
Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)
Samkim and Arula continue west with Martin's sword at the centre of their pursuit, meeting creatures whose help has to be earned rather than assumed. Their road begins to draw them toward Salamandastron and the war gathering there. Mara and Pikkle discover that life outside the mountain is not the simple freedom they imagined; they face deception and captivity before finding allies among the Guosim shrews. Thrugg and Dumble press into the northern country for the cure as Redwall's fever worsens behind them. At Salamandastron, the Long Patrol prepares to withstand a much larger attacking force.
Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)
The separate journeys begin to turn back toward their threatened homes. Thrugg reaches the country where the Flowers of Icetor can be found and must survive the hazards guarding the cure before carrying it south. Samkim and Arula recover Martin's sword and travel with new allies toward the western mountain. Mara and Pikkle, now accompanied by shrews, also move back toward Salamandastron with a harder understanding of the world outside it. Ferahgo closes his grip around the mountain, probing the Long Patrol's defences while Urthstripe prepares for a battle that cannot be avoided.
Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)
Thrugg's expedition returns with the Flowers of Icetor, giving Redwall the means to halt Dryditch fever and save the creatures who remain ill. In the west, the travellers and their allies reach Salamandastron as Ferahgo's siege becomes a direct assault. Mara returns to the home she rejected and learns more of the fear and love behind Urthstripe's harsh protection. Samkim and Arula arrive no longer playing at heroism, and Martin's sword becomes part of the mountain's defence. The Long Patrol and its allies hold against Ferahgo's horde, but the struggle is narrowing toward a personal reckoning between the Assassin and the badger lord.
Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)
The allied defenders break Ferahgo's attack on Salamandastron. Urthstripe confronts the Assassin in the mountain heights, and the two enemies fall to their deaths in their final struggle. Ferahgo's son Klitch escapes the battlefield but dies while fleeing, undone by the legacy of his father's treachery, and the surviving horde scatters. Mara and the Long Patrol are left to mourn Urthstripe and rebuild the peace he died defending. At Redwall, the Flowers of Icetor overcome Dryditch fever. Samkim and Arula return with Martin's sword after proving themselves through endurance and responsibility, while Thrugg and Dumble come home from the northern quest. Redwall and Salamandastron survive, each marked by losses but secure again.
How does it end? (ending)
Ferahgo's assault reaches Salamandastron, where the Long Patrol, the returning travellers, and their allies fight beside Urthstripe. The badger lord confronts the Assassin in the mountain heights, and their final struggle carries both of them to their deaths. Klitch escapes the battle but does not escape the consequences of his father's treachery; he dies while fleeing. The horde breaks, and Salamandastron survives at heavy cost. Mara returns after learning what lay behind Urthstripe's severity, and she and the surviving hares mourn him with a better understanding than they had when she ran away. At Redwall, Thrugg's northern journey secures the Flowers of Icetor, allowing the Abbey to overcome Dryditch fever. Samkim and Arula return having carried Martin's sword through real danger rather than the imagined adventures with which they began. The separate roads end in recovery at Redwall and peace at the mountain, though both communities remember those lost to the sickness and war.
