Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Salvatore "Sal" Argento (Protagonist)

Also known as Myth, Mythcrafter

Appears from the start

The book's viewpoint character, a first-year crafter-appraiser at Quest Academy recovering from the injuries of his reclaimed-zone excursion. His silver eyes appraise any object in exact detail, and his fused Mythcrafter ability builds extraordinary gear from powers he has copied with Skill Master. Ranked third in his year, he still shuns front-line combat, set instead on founding a crafting guild that could lift many heroes at once.

Erika Clifton

Appears from the start

Daughter of the telepath Nero and one of the Academy's highest-ranked first-years, a mind-control specialist who can compel others and read surface thoughts. Named captain of Sal's tower team, she is made to wear an ability-suppressing locket for the entire trial as punishment for harming him during the excursion. Cold and controlling, she treats teammates as pieces to be positioned rather than people to trust.

Brophy (Supporting)

Also known as Gallant

Appears from the start

An offense-class member of Sal's team, secretly the vanished child hero Gallant. His original power evolved at his lowest point into a volatile, trauma-fueled ability that a restraining locket keeps suppressed rather than healed. Sal has taken on the personal project of crafting a way to give him true mastery over it. Gifted and charming in public, he is colder and more dangerous underneath.

Upgrade (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Sal's crafting mentor and the workshop's lead lecturer, known by her hero alias, whose ability turns her gear into powered mechanical armor. Warm but exacting, she funds and co-builds his commissions, reins in his habit of taking on too much at once, and helps set up a machine that lets him test skill weaves safely outside a living body.

Quest (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The headmaster of Quest Academy, who goes by a chosen name. His "system" ability reads and quantifies essence and keeps a vast searchable log of the Academy's activity. A merit-focused mentor with a personal stake in Sal, he negotiates the terms on which Sal may use his power to improve other people's abilities, while shielding him from outside guild and Hunter Bureau pressure.

Blathnaid McClean (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

A first-year crafting classmate and one of Sal's steadiest friends, a gifted tailor with a construct ability and a hardened, reclaimed-zone upbringing. Modest about her own talent, she collaborates on the team's gear while rapidly closing the gap with Sal's own work, and is determined to earn a place among the Academy's best on her own merit rather than through friendship.

Divinity Khan (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 9

A foresight-gifted first-year and Sal's closest confidant, whose eyes turn white when she reads possible futures. Candid and fiercely loyal, she works quietly for a disaster-prevention circle and often glimpses trouble before it arrives. She tries to steer Sal away from his worst possible futures while deliberately refusing to spoil the good ones.

Rochelle de Verdon (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 9

A first-year healer on Sal's team whose Transference ability drains essence from one target to mend another. Once ostracized for trying to charge for healing, she is a warm, sharp ally with a deep, self-taught grasp of essence theory. She is being fitted with a powerful crafted coat meant to fix her chronic shortage of usable essence.

Alex (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 14

A student alchemist who sells homemade tonics and elixirs from a market stall. Shrewd and playful, he brews everything from insight-surfacing draughts to mastery boosters, and strikes a supply deal with Sal, trading elixir work for rare portal-sourced ingredients routed through the Argento auction house.

Darren (Supporting)

Also known as Dazzler

First appears in chapter 22

A first-year body manipulator and already a ranked hunter, introduced when he brings Sal and Blathnaid on a scavenger run. His ability reshapes his own muscle for enormous leaping strength and speed. Gruff and insecure about his place among Sal's friends, he is plainly devoted to Blathnaid, covering her fees and giving away most of his earnings for her sake.

Anna Sakura (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 35

A guarded third-year Savior-class student whose Nullify ability severs a target's essence, lethal to demons but backlashing painfully on her with each use. Sharp and hard to read, she is being courted by several guilds at once. Sal targets her as a recruit for his own future guild, winning her interest only after an attempt at manipulation fails and he honestly improves her real ability.

Barry Francis (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 39

A low-ranked illusionist and one of Sal's closest friends, sharp-tongued and inventive. His illusions form decoys, invisibility, and full training scenarios, and he takes quickly to a crafted gear set that lets him hide real conjured blades among fakes. Quietly top of every academic subject, he needles Sal constantly while pushing him to stand up for the overlooked.

The Team's Warder (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 49

The defense-class member of Sal's team, a large, soft-spoken warder whose rune barriers shield the group. Quiet and unassuming where his teammates are loud, he is one of the steadier hands on a fractious team, more at ease building protective wards than drawing attention to himself.

Prestige (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 53

A top-ranked Hunter Bureau hero and Gallant's mother, who guides Sal's team through the tower trial. Poised, exacting, and immensely powerful, she runs the trial as a strict graded exercise of escalating handicaps and hidden objectives. She has spent years seeking a specialist to treat her son's condition, and sees far more in Sal than he admits to being.

Grant (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 53

A Hunter Bureau researcher who holds the rare Skill Savant ability, able to grant powers of his own creation into others for a time. He runs the synchronization analysis behind every weave Sal submits to the workshop's simulation machine, and takes an intense professional interest once Sal's results begin exceeding what anyone thought possible.

Rob (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 72

A relaxed, formidable hunter the team rescues partway through the tower trial. Recognizing the Argento and Clifton family names, he offers to keep assisting them through the harder floors and takes an easy, obvious enjoyment in real danger. There is plainly far more to him than a rescued hunter, though he keeps it to himself for now.

Vanessa (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 83

A credit-floor broker and one of Sal's most determined advocates, tied to the Reavers Guild and set on founding a guild alongside him one day. Her body-manipulation ability forces essence gates open far faster than natural growth allows. Transactional and protective, she manages his materials and sales and pushes his ambitions past what he would attempt alone.
