In short (whole book)
Recovered from his excursion injuries, Sal Argento spends the run-up to a Tower trial winning the headmaster's permission to use his ability to improve other people's powers, chasing a fix for the volatile hidden hero Gallant, and quietly arming his team. Along the way he accidentally creates Perfect, a flawless self-improving ability best suited to himself, which sharpens his crafting, movement, and combat and rapidly grows his power. The Tower turns out to be a staged Hunter Bureau training site that escalates into a genuine demon incursion, where Sal kills his first hulker in melee, Gallant breaks down and is benched, and the team becomes the first to clear five floors. A rescued hunter is revealed as the Bureau's president, who has been watching Sal for months. The Academy then names its first Saviors, and Sal is announced as the single top-ranked Savior in the whole school. He also glimpses a possible sixty-years future in which humanity is winning the war but his mentor has died, and heads home for the break to win his parents' backing for the crafting guild he still means to found.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously, in the Quest Academy series: Sal Argento, a guarded young man whose silver eyes appraise any object and who can copy other people's abilities, enrolled at Quest Academy, where heroes train to reclaim demon-held land. During skill registration he accidentally fused several powers into a unique top-tier crafting ability the Academy calls Mythcrafter, and became the protege of the crafting lecturer Upgrade. Befriending the foresight-gifted Divinity Khan, he was drawn into a secret disaster-prevention circle, helped expose Bastion, a wealthy faction seeding loyal students through the Academy, and led a squad of underdogs to victory in the first-year tournament, finishing third overall behind Divinity and Nero's daughter, Erika Clifton. In his second month a harsh new curriculum placed him on Erika's fractious excursion team alongside the healer Rochelle de Verdon, a quiet warder, and an offense cadet secretly the vanished child hero Gallant, whose volatile ability a locket keeps suppressed. Their guardian was the top hero Prestige, revealed to be Gallant's mother. The team passed the reclaimed-zone excursion two wins to one, but Erika twice seized control of Sal's body without consent, once marching him unarmed into stone golems and leaving him with shattered arms and broken ribs. Sal accepted that he had been avoiding real growth, resolved to pursue it as the founder of a crafting guild rather than a frontline fighter, and agreed to try to craft a cure for Gallant's condition, ahead of a looming Tower trial where Prestige expects five cleared floors.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
So far this book: recovered from his excursion injuries, Sal negotiates with the headmaster, Quest, for permission to use his ability on consenting people, agreeing to prove himself by producing a set of flawless skill weaves on a new simulation machine that lets him test powers safely outside a living body. Erika is punished for harming him with a locket that will suppress her mind control for the whole coming Tower trial. Wanting to help the volatile Gallant master his suppressed ability, Sal takes that on as a personal goal. Working with Upgrade, he pours enormous effort into a support student whose ability had never functioned, rebuilding it from the ground up and eventually giving her a full, four-stage ability chain, an all but unheard-of result. Quest, wary of the attention Sal's true scope will attract, sets limits and asks him to practice on people with little to lose. Sal also begins researching an ability for himself and for Gallant, and quietly commissions crafted gear for his teammates ahead of the trial. As the stretch closes, an out-of-context message from Divinity, still away on her own excursion, hints that she already knows about work Sal thought was private.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
Sal keeps grinding through the simulation machine, improving dozens of students' abilities and earning steady Academy pay for each success, while researching candidate powers to give Gallant true mastery and to build an implant for himself. A session with the Academy's blunt resilience instructor reframes everything: shown hard numbers, Sal accepts he can never personally fix every hero, and that the scalable version of his ambition is to found and lead a guild rather than work alone. He commits firmly to that path. Along the way he reconciles with a group of workshop students he had clashed with, and strikes a supply deal with the student alchemist Alex to source rare ingredients through his family's auction house. Experimenting with combining powers, he concludes his own copying ability may be the binding element that lets several abilities fuse into one. Blathnaid invites him along on a scavenger run into the reclaimed zone with the body manipulator Darren to gather crafting materials, and he accepts.
Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)
The scavenger run becomes a self-contained adventure. Guided by the brusque network official Matron, Sal, Blathnaid, and Darren race to the far edge of a picked-over zone, harvest prowler materials, and turn up a cache of lockboxes that may have been a rival team's planted stash. Sal, in his element as a trader raised in an auction house, negotiates their haul for far more than expected, and the trio bank a large sum. Darren, gruff and insecure about his place in the group, tries to give nearly all his earnings to Blathnaid, whom he plainly favors, before the team settles the split more fairly. All three rise sharply in scavenger rank, earning rare recommendations for a first run. Blathnaid shows hardened, reclaimed-zone survival skills alongside her crafting, and the run cements Darren as a genuine friend rather than a reluctant guide. They return to the workshop with a stockpile of premium materials for the coming trial.
Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)
Back in the workshop, Sal experiments further with fusing powers and, almost by accident, creates a brand-new ability that summons essence constructs across a wide area, though he cannot use it himself. He finishes a legendary-grade coat for Rochelle, built with Upgrade and Blathnaid, that should fix her chronic essence shortage. He also meets the guarded third-year Anna Sakura, honestly improving her real ability to win her interest in his future guild after an attempt at manipulation backfires. As the month-long excursion ends, the whole first year streams back to the Academy, and a mandatory assembly lays out the semester's structure: a final trial clearing a floor of a demon-filled tower, preceded by mandatory demon-behavior classes, with a licensing track offered as an exit for struggling supports. The visiting lecturer Chatfield announces that roughly three hundred students have been cut from tower eligibility on their excursion results, sharpening the divide between his results-first philosophy and Quest's gentler one. Sal's team, already rested, is among the first scheduled to enter the tower.
Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)
The surviving first-years file into mandatory demonic-behavior and tactics classes taught by new professors, learning a full taxonomy of demon types and how to read their behavior. Barry, revealed to be quietly brilliant, shines in the analysis lessons, and Sal equips him with a powerful crafted armor set that hides real conjured blades among illusions. A serious rift opens between Sal and Divinity: with his consent, she discloses a possible future in which following Erika's advice to build a combat ability by copying every hero he meets eventually destroys his eyesight, since his crafting ability already strains beyond his capacity and his eyes have quietly been protected by outside healing all along. Sal refuses to promise he will never take that path, upsetting her. He also spends heavily at a student market, buying an unfinished flight rig he privately imagines completing one day for Divinity. The classes build toward hands-on demon dissection and, beyond it, the tower itself.
Story so far - through chapter 53 (this book)
During the dissection labs, Gallant shows unexpected patience and expertise as a teacher, while Barry deliberately provokes a public argument with him as a calculated tactic to keep Gallant seeking Sal's favor, warning Sal privately that Gallant's underlying menace is real. Sal and Blathnaid quietly amass a large stockpile of salvaged materials with a professor's blessing. Chasing a mastery ability for Gallant, Sal mistypes a database search and accidentally combines three powers into something entirely new. The result draws the Academy's leadership: Quest, Upgrade, and the researcher Grant, who holds a rare ability-granting power and secretly runs the analysis behind all of Sal's work, pull him from class, and Prestige steps through a teleportation gate to join them. The new ability is named Perfect, a body-manipulation power that continuously improves both learning and existing skills, with hundreds of compatible users including Gallant. They ask Sal to activate it on himself so it can be studied directly.
Story so far - through chapter 60 (this book)
Sal activates Perfect, and it proves extraordinary: it amplifies a simple health elixir into a full-body restoration that unlocks his essence gates outright, and is confirmed to be a genuinely flawless ability, best suited to Sal himself. Over the following days he drinks a course of elixirs, raising his gate count sharply, while Perfect quietly sharpens his crafting, movement, and technique. Prestige, over Quest's insistence that Gallant must earn his place rather than have it bought, agrees a plan to fix Gallant with Perfect plus an elixir. Quest reveals the party he has trusted to back Sal's guild without exploiting him is Sal's own family's auction house. As the tower nears, Sal freehands a signature gear piece in a crafting flow state, delivers legendary and unique gear to his fully uniformed team, and accepts a sincere apology from Gallant, who has learned Sal broke the rules to help him. The team reaches the tower entrance ready to begin.
Story so far - through chapter 64 (this book)
The tower proves not to be the peaceful district the cohort walked through but a facility reached by teleportation gate, with Prestige guiding the team and demanding five cleared floors. The first floor is a pitch-dark maze; the team splits, and Sal, Gallant, and Rochelle clear it with rapid revolver work and melee, Rochelle emerging as a genuinely dangerous fighter with her coat's grappling hooks and even soloing the floor's boss. Sal confirms Perfect is boosting his balance, reflexes, and instinct in combat, not only his crafting. Examining the boss, he realizes the whole tower is a staged Hunter Bureau training site stocked with planted demons rather than a real dungeon, something Gallant already knew. Prestige delivers a positive verdict and reveals the run's real format: per-floor handicaps that sideline different members and optional hidden objectives, escalating the challenge as they climb.
Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)
The trial climbs through cleverly designed floors, each benching different members. On a platform course, Sal and a locket-restrained Erika find a surprisingly cooperative rhythm, and Sal discovers that Perfect can passively absorb a teammate's ability used on him: a burst of Rochelle's healing essence is redirected into wholesale physical enhancement of his body. On a laboratory floor watched from a balcony, Prestige probes Erika's guarded, tool-like philosophy of leadership, all but confirms her hidden telepathy and a chess-themed hero name, and offers to personally teach Sal a hunter's essence-sensing technique. Gallant displays elite, brutal unarmed combat that Prestige says no veteran has bettered. Several hunters are rescued along the way, including an easygoing one named Rob who offers to keep helping. As the floors end, Prestige reveals that the fourth floor leads directly and irreversibly into the fifth, a point of no return, and sends only Gallant, Sal, and Erika in.
Story so far - through chapter 78 (this book)
The fourth floor is a running battle up a stairway maze that flows straight into the fifth: a derelict high-rise at the true edge of the demon-held red zone, where the protective barrier has been removed entirely, making the danger real rather than staged. Hundreds of demons, including hulkers and voiders, swarm up from below toward a rooftop extraction point. Rochelle rejoins and dominates, killing a large flying demon alone and draining a voider mid-attack. Gallant, elated and unstable, defies Erika outright, and Rob, revealing overwhelming power, forcibly subdues and benches him, substituting himself and his subordinate for the team's injured, concussed warder. The floor's true final threat then breaks through: a massive obsidian-armored hulker that reflects essence attacks. With no ranged answer left, Sal fights it hand-to-hand in his transforming armor, sustained by Rochelle's tethered essence, and kills his first hulker with Erika firing his revolver on his call. The team is the first to clear floor five.
Story so far - through chapter 84 (this book)
Aboard the extraction craft, Prestige confronts Rob for turning the trial into a genuine hulker fight. Rob is revealed as the president of the Hunter Bureau and bearer of the legendary hero name Phantom, and admits he has quietly tracked Sal's crafting for some time; he demands to take Gallant away for a corrective internship and hands personal gala invitations to Sal, Erika, and Rochelle, pointedly excluding Gallant and the team's warder. Quest, once he learns his students cleared five floors, judges Sal, Erika, and Rochelle very likely to become the Academy's first-ever first-year Saviors; Prestige recommends against naming Gallant, and Rochelle refuses to soften her judgment of him. Cleared to go home early, Sal reconnects with the broker Vanessa, reaffirms their guild partnership with proof of his hulker kill, and learns a major secret: the Ark Guild's guildmaster once founded the megastructure whose crew became the antagonist faction Bastion, and Quest Academy itself sits on that project's original launch site. The stretch ends on Sal's sudden alarm at a name Vanessa mentions.
Story so far - through chapter 93 (this book)
Back at the workshop, Sal reworks a broken crown and obsidian from his hulker kill into a five-attribute circlet he gives Divinity, dramatically amplifying her foresight. Using Perfect deliberately to let her ability pass through him, he is pulled into a vivid vision sixty years ahead: humanity is winning the war and a crafting economy has grown around his own future brand, but a memorial reveals that his mentor Upgrade has died by then. His full stat sheet confirms he has grown stronger and drawn scouting interest from five guilds. At a grand assembly, the Academy names its first fifteen Saviors in reverse rank order; Erika, Rochelle, Barry, and Divinity are all included, Gallant and the team's warder are explicitly excluded, and Sal is revealed as the single top-ranked Savior in the entire Academy, publicly credited for his hulker kill and his crafting. In a final debrief, Quest itemizes Sal's rewards, offers to endorse his guild ambitions to his parents, and confirms a long-dormant outing to a proficiency-holder called Coach. Sal chooses to spend the break at his family's auction house to win his parents' backing in person, and boards the train home with his first semester complete, his guild still unfounded and every major thread carried into the next book.
How does it end? (ending)
Book 3 ends with Quest Academy's first Savior class seated and the Tower trial resolved. Sal's five-person team survived the trial's genuine floor-five demon incursion without lasting injury. Three of them, plus his close friends Divinity Khan and Barry Francis, are among the first fifteen named Saviors; Gallant and the team's warder are excluded, Gallant for his battle-frenzy breakdown and insubordination, the warder for achievements judged team-carried rather than individual, though both are promised consolation rewards. Sal is named not just a Savior but the single top-ranked Savior in the entire Academy, publicly credited for killing a hulker and for his crafting and skill-implant work. No one dies on-page; the darkest note is a possible sixty-years future Sal glimpses through Divinity's amplified foresight, in which humanity is winning the war but most of the current cast, including his mentor Upgrade, has died, a future Divinity insists remains changeable. Sal's guild ambition advances but is not resolved: with top-Savior status, proof of his hulker kill, and Quest's offer to endorse him at an upcoming gala, he chooses to spend the break at his family's auction house to win his parents' backing in person, the outcome unknown. Rob's demand to take Gallant away, Prestige's alternative, a scheduled meeting with the Ark guildmaster, an outing to the proficiency-holder Coach, Sal's promised reconciliation with Hannah, and the antagonist faction Bastion all remain open, carried into the next book, Legacies.
