Sea of Swords: Legend of Drizzt: Paths of Darkness, Book 3 recap

Drizzt, Catti-brie, Bruenor and Regis follow reports of Wulfgar to Luskan, where they learn of his drinking, conviction, exile and the disappearance of Aegis-fang. Morik and Captain Deudermont help separate Wulfgar's true trail from the accusations left behind. The hammer has reached pirate leader Sheila Kree, whose concealed coastal base is protected by a mixed band of raiders and powerful allies. Wulfgar is alive and traveling with Delly Curtie and the infant Colson, whose care has begun to pull him out of self-destruction. He reunites with the companions without trying to reclaim his former relationship with Catti-brie, and the group joins forces against Sheila. Among the pirates is Le'lorinel, secretly Ellifain, the elf child Drizzt saved from a drow massacre; she has grown up blaming him for the attack. Sheila's band is defeated, Wulfgar recovers Aegis-fang and Drizzt survives Ellifain's final assault, though she dies. Wulfgar heads north with Delly and Colson, rejoining his old family on new terms.

Previously: Wulfgar was freed after six years of torment by the demon Errtu, but he could not resume his old place among Drizzt, Catti-brie, Bruenor and Regis. Drizzt and Catti-brie had become partners during his absence, and Wulfgar's nightmares and anger made even the safety of Mithral Hall feel confining. He left the companions for Luskan, where drink and violence nearly destroyed him. Morik the Rogue befriended him and Delly Curtie offered compassion, but Wulfgar lost Aegis-fang and was expelled from the city after a conviction tied to an attack involving Captain Deudermont. Traveling with Morik, he became involved in the crisis of Meralda of Auckney. When she gave birth to Jaka Sculi's child under circumstances that put her future at risk, Wulfgar claimed responsibility and took the infant, Colson, away. Delly agreed to help him care for the child. The other Companions of the Hall did not take part in those events and begin this book knowing only fragments of Wulfgar's path.

Drizzt, Catti-brie, Bruenor and Regis act on reports that Wulfgar survived his solitary journey but passed through Luskan in serious trouble. They head for the coast to follow facts rather than assume that bringing him home will solve what is wrong. Their search is complicated by Wulfgar's reputation: stories of tavern violence, criminal associates and a conviction have traveled more readily than the circumstances behind them. Captain Deudermont can confirm that Wulfgar and Morik lived through Luskan's judgment, while the Cutlass and the city's underworld preserve pieces of the path that followed. Aegis-fang is missing. Because the enchanted hammer should return to Wulfgar when thrown, its continued absence suggests deliberate interception rather than an ordinary loss. The companions begin treating the weapon's trail as a way to find both the people who exploited Wulfgar and, possibly, Wulfgar himself.

Morik and Deudermont help the companions reconstruct Wulfgar's collapse in Luskan, his narrow escape from execution and his exile. Their accounts also point toward a pirate network that profited from the confusion surrounding Aegis-fang. The hammer has passed into the possession of Sheila Kree, a raider with enough force and secrecy to hold a weapon known across the north. Drizzt and Catti-brie pursue the pirates while Bruenor treats recovery of the hammer as inseparable from finding his foster son. Regis works through contacts who are more willing to discuss stolen goods than missing heroes. Elsewhere, Wulfgar is alive with Delly and Colson. The infant's needs impose a daily discipline that neither battle nor shame could give him. He still has nightmares and periods of anger, but he is now responsible for two people who cannot simply follow wherever his self-destruction leads. His own search for Aegis-fang begins to draw him toward the same enemies his friends are tracking.

The pursuit narrows toward Sheila Kree's concealed coastal base. Her company is more than a loose pirate crew: it includes fighters and monstrous allies capable of defending difficult ground, and Aegis-fang gives the band both a powerful weapon and a lure for Wulfgar. An elf calling herself Le'lorinel joins Sheila while concealing a separate purpose. Her attention repeatedly returns to Drizzt, though the pirates read it as interest in the famous ranger or in the reward his death might bring. The Companions of the Hall and Wulfgar approach the enemy from different trails. Wulfgar fears meeting Catti-brie and Drizzt almost as much as he wants to see Bruenor and Regis, because reunion requires him to acknowledge that his former engagement is over. Delly and Colson make that meeting possible: they are evidence that his future does not have to be a failed restoration of his past.

Wulfgar and the companions finally reconnect. The reunion is cautious rather than triumphant. Bruenor's relief is immediate, while Drizzt and Catti-brie allow Wulfgar to define what help he will accept. Wulfgar in turn recognizes their partnership without treating it as a theft of the years he lost. Delly and Colson give the group a new understanding of the life he has begun to construct. With the personal question no longer preventing cooperation, they combine their information and prepare to strike Sheila Kree's stronghold. The goal is to recover Aegis-fang and end a pirate band that will otherwise continue using the hammer to attract or kill its owner. Le'lorinel encourages the coming confrontation because the battle will place Drizzt within reach and distract his friends. The elf's knowledge and intensity reveal that the hidden grievance is older and more personal than any alliance with Sheila, but Drizzt still does not know the identity behind the assumed name.

The companions assault Sheila Kree's base, fighting through the pirate force and its allies until the organization can no longer hold the stronghold. Wulfgar reaches Aegis-fang and recovers the warhammer, reclaiming an important part of his history without pretending that the weapon alone restores him. Sheila's power is broken. Within the wider battle, Le'lorinel isolates Drizzt and reveals herself as Ellifain, the elf child he spared during a surface raid by the drow of Menzoberranzan. She survived the massacre but grew up with trauma, fragmentary memory and the belief that Drizzt was responsible for her family's deaths. The resulting duel nearly kills him. Ellifain is mortally wounded, and the truth of his attempt to save her emerges too late to repair her life. Catti-brie helps Drizzt survive the encounter. Afterward, Wulfgar chooses to go north with Delly and Colson. He rejoins Bruenor, Regis, Drizzt and Catti-brie as a changed man with a new family, accepting their changed relationships and continuing his recovery rather than returning to isolation.

The reunited companions assault Sheila Kree's coastal stronghold and break the pirate alliance protecting Aegis-fang. Sheila's operation is destroyed, and Wulfgar recovers the warhammer Bruenor forged for him. Le'lorinel uses the battle to force a private confrontation with Drizzt, revealing that she is Ellifain, the elf child he saved during a drow surface raid many years earlier. Trauma and incomplete memories led her to identify him with the slaughter of her family rather than with her rescue. Their duel leaves Drizzt gravely endangered and Ellifain mortally wounded; recognition comes too late to give either of them a true reconciliation. Drizzt survives with Catti-brie's help. Wulfgar's recovery of Aegis-fang does not erase Errtu's torment, but he can finally meet his old family without demanding his former place back. He chooses to return north with Delly and Colson and accept a new role as partner and father. The Companions of the Hall are reunited on changed terms: Drizzt and Catti-brie remain together, Bruenor and Regis recover Wulfgar alive, and Wulfgar carries both his hammer and responsibility for his new family toward Icewind Dale.
