By Kristin Cashore

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Hava (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The queen of Monsea's half-sister and her spy, Graced with hiding herself: she can hold still and let an onlooker's eye take her for a barrel, a coil of rope, a piece of the ship. She narrates this book. She is the daughter of King Leck, who killed her mother, and she has spent her life refusing to be anyone's family, working alone, and treating being unseen as the only safe way to exist. She is sailing home from Winterkeep with a secret she has told nobody.

Bitterblue (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Queen of Monsea, sailing home from the disaster in Winterkeep. She is Hava's half-sister, keeps trying to treat her as one, and is generally met with resistance. Exacting, tired, and holding a great deal together.

Giddon (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A Middluns-born leader of the Council, long stripped of his lands for it, now the queen's closest ally and companion. Calm, practical and good in a crisis, which the voyage will require.

Linny (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

A young Monsean sailor aboard the queen's ship, easy-tempered and observant, one of the few people who notices Hava when she does not want to be noticed and does not make a problem of it.

The fox (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

A small blue fox out of Winterkeep, one of the animals that bond to a person and can touch that person's mind. It has come aboard without permission and has decided, without consulting anyone, that it belongs to Hava.
