Hava, Queen Bitterblue's half-sister and spy, narrates the voyage home from Winterkeep. She is carrying a secret: she stole the research that could make a zilfium weapon, and has told nobody, because she does not trust anyone - including her own queen - with what it could do. A blue fox stows away and attaches itself to her. The ship is then destroyed in the ice of the far north, and the survivors, the queen among them, have to get themselves off the floes and across a frozen coast with very little, in constant cold and hunger. Hava's Grace for going unseen makes her the party's scout, and the ordeal strips away the distance she has kept from everyone: from Bitterblue, whose sister she will not admit to being; from Linny, a young sailor who sees her anyway; and from the fox that has decided she is its person. They survive, reach help and get home, and Hava finally tells Bitterblue what she took and lets go of holding it alone.

Previously: Queen Bitterblue of Monsea sailed to Winterkeep, on the far continent of Torla, to find out why two of her envoys had drowned. They had been murdered to protect a secret project to build a weapon out of zilfium, Winterkeep's contested fuel. Bitterblue was herself taken and held prisoner and given up for drowned before being found alive; the family behind the murders was exposed and destroyed. Bitterblue and Giddon of the Council came out of it together, openly. Travelling with them was Hava, who narrates this book: Bitterblue's half-sister, the other daughter of King Leck, Graced with hiding herself in plain sight, working as the queen's spy and refusing to be treated as family. Winterkeep is also home to blue foxes that bond to a person and touch their mind. This book begins with the Monsean party sailing home.

The Monsean party leaves Winterkeep for the long voyage home, with the queen, Giddon, and a crew Hava mostly avoids. Hava is not travelling light in the way that matters: she stole something in Winterkeep and smuggled it aboard, and has told nobody, not even Bitterblue. She spends the passage watching everyone, using her Grace to be somewhere unseen when she wants to think, and arguing with herself about whether she is protecting the world from what she took or simply keeping it because secrets are the only thing she has ever felt safe holding. A small blue fox out of Winterkeep has come aboard as well, without anyone's permission, and has attached itself to her mind and her company with complete confidence and no interest in being sent away.

The route home takes the ship north into cold water and then into ice, and the ice is worse than anyone expected. Life aboard narrows to weather, watches and the growing understanding that the ship is in real danger. Hava's isolation aboard sharpens rather than eases: Bitterblue keeps trying to be her sister and Hava keeps refusing the word; a young sailor called Linny notices her when she has arranged not to be noticed, which she finds harder to deal with than hostility would be; and the fox, which cannot be lied to, keeps telling her what she actually feels. What she took out of Winterkeep is still hidden, and still hers alone, and the longer she says nothing the harder saying anything becomes.

The ice destroys the ship. The survivors get themselves and what little they can save onto the floes and then toward land, and the book becomes a survival story: cold, injuries, wet clothing, hunger, and the constant arithmetic of how far the next shelter is. Hava's Grace turns out to be exactly the right one to have - she can go ahead of the party unseen and come back with the truth about what is in front of them - and being needed by people is not something she has any practice at refusing. She is also carrying her stolen secret through all of it, and what happened to her mother and what her father was keep surfacing whenever she is too cold and too tired to keep them down. The distance she has kept from Bitterblue and from Linny does not survive the crossing intact.

The survivors come through the cold, reach help and eventually reach home. Hava's real work in the book is finished at the same time: she stops hiding. She tells Bitterblue what she carried out of Winterkeep - the research that could make a zilfium weapon - and hands over the decision instead of keeping the power of it to herself. She admits, to Bitterblue and to herself, that they are sisters and that she has a place in that household rather than a position at its edge that could be withdrawn. She keeps the fox, which had already settled the question. And she lets Linny love her instead of vanishing, which for someone Graced with not being seen is the hardest thing the book asks of her.

Hava stops hiding, which is the whole arc of the book. The survivors of the wreck come through the cold, reach help, and get home to Monsea. Along the way Hava admits what she carried out of Winterkeep - the stolen research that could turn zilfium into a weapon - and hands the decision about it to Bitterblue instead of keeping it as one more secret she alone controls. She stops treating being unseen as the only safe way to live: she accepts that Bitterblue is her sister and that she has a place in that household rather than a tolerated position at its edge, she accepts what the bonded fox has decided about belonging to her, and she lets herself be loved by Linny rather than disappearing from him. Her father's crimes and her mother's death stop being the only facts that define her.
