Second Son
By Lee Child
As the Reacher family moves to Okinawa, following the Marine Corps reposting of Jack's father from Guam, a Paris housekeeper tries in vain to reach them because Reacher's maternal grandfather has fallen gravely ill, learning only that they have already left Guam. Thirteen-year-old Reacher and his fifteen-year-old brother Joe settle into off-post housing and must pass placement tests to determine whether their disrupted schooling permits them to advance a grade - a challenge Joe treats as a matter of pride while Reacher aims only to get through it. Exploring their new neighborhood, the brothers are confronted by a local bully who demands a toll for passage to the beach; the standoff is interrupted before it turns violent, leaving the threat postponed rather than resolved.
