A girl near Reacher's age who lives in his new Okinawa neighborhood. The local boys have demanded their beach toll from her as well, and she asks Reacher to accompany her home because she is afraid of encountering them alone.

Helen's father, a rear-echelon Marine whose assignments keep his household in one place more often than Stan Reacher's combat postings do. At his introduction, he is known chiefly through the relative stability of Helen's family life.

The apparent leader of a group of local boys who block the Reacher brothers on their way to the beach and demand a compulsory toll. He mocks the newcomers over their placement test and postpones his threat only when Marine adults approach.

An associate of the neighborhood bully who is present when Reacher deliberately returns for another confrontation. He supports the larger boy in the local hierarchy and becomes the first obstacle Reacher faces during the planned encounter.
